[wmm] FW: Evening Cruise Ships

I guess it's all in how you look at it. What if stores stay open and people
spread the word to the cruise ship staff and the "BUZZ" brings us more
business in the future. If I owned a business downtown I would be looking
for ways to make them welcome and coming to my shop.

In the past the businesses complained that we didn't know much about the
Cruise Ships. Now we are just trying to help the business community with
information and hopefully sales. In September there will be two Cruise
Ships with over 4000 people. I would hate to see us lose the opportunity
for the fall business because we didn't sow the seeds for the future buses
now. Again it's all in how you look at it.

I guess I don't get this whole concern about a handful of people who
basically buy nothing but we want to pay staff or stay late ourselves so
that the cruise lines will have something to offer disgruntled passengers
who thought they were going to Mexico and wound up in Astoria instead? It
all has a feel of desperation to me and I think that is not something that
we as a business community want to display. A few dollars spent on taffy do
not justify my participation in the Cannon Beach walking tour; I get enough
people in the store who are just walking around the loop as it is.

I just had a cousin from Minnesota visit who was detoured from Mexico to
Astoria and she definitely was not in the mood to shop on the North Coast.
She wanted a damned Margarita on a warm beach!

I was at a meeting with City Managers and Mayors along the Oregon Coast and
the Major from Astoria said that when the buses stopped in Seaside the
stores were all closed including the out let mall at 7:00p. He mentioned
that Cannon Beach was reaching out to the tour ships where they hadn't in
the past. It was also mentioned that if Seaside didn't want to stay open
then they may just bring them to Cannon Beach.

Many of you have already received Tracy's message (see below). I'm sure some
of you are saying it's not worth it to be open for such a small group of
people with so little time. I agree, but at the same time, if we want the
numbers to grow and we want them to spend more time here in the future, we
have to make the investment of time and good service. I encourage everyone
to give it a chance. This is an opportunity. Let's build on it. It is
certain that if we're not open and don't welcome these visitors, the cruise
lines will schedule us out. .. George

 Dear Cannon Beach Businesses,

Please look at your "Chamber Weekly Update" arriving this afternoon for the
new cruise schedule. Please Note: The first two large ships coming in are
Sept 22 and not June 22 as previously listed.

We have been working with Sundial on the Tuesday evening cruise ships that
have been re-routed to Astoria instead of Mexico. Regrettably because some
of the Seaside and Cannon Beach businesses are not participating by staying
open late and some of the tour participants have complained to the cruise
ships, the Seaside/Cannon Beach tour is in jeopardy. Please let me know by
tomorrow 12pm if your business plans to stay open this Tuesday and we will
send the list in advance to Sundial to let the cruise participants know
BEFORE they arrive in Cannon Beach.

Thank You,

Tracy Abel
