will spearhead an effort to produce a quadfold flyer. There was much discussion
about bags and badges (see WOW minutes, following)

Wendy brought up topics in the Coast Business
Journal, namely the increase in lodging tax and the accountability for use of
those funds.  Also, the coming of WalMart
was discussed in detail. Jeff told the meeting about  a paper he had written about the predatory

advertising in the media, educating the public, being on the alert for possible
conflicts of interest by public officials, the apparent attempt by Warrenton to
profit at the expense of other North Coast communities.

This led to a general discussion as to the role
of this organization economically and politically. Jeff reminded everyone that
this was a topic for the Board and the Oct 6 Chamber meeting.

4)

Joyce reminded everyone about Game Night at
Tolovana Inn Oct 3 to benefit Children’s Center and about Saturday afternoon
1-3, a bird painter at the Gallery. Also, Oct 8, the Gallery Tour and info

regarding Tsunamis. Wendy outlined City efforts and BobM will discuss this with

THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE SEPT 9 @ Mo’s.

WOW COMMITTEE: Following the general
meeting, a meeting of the WOW committee was held. There were 8 members in
attendance. The subjects discussed were:

The BAGS—After much discussion, it was decided
to make the purchase of bags optional for each business, to be decided whether
or not a portion of any purchase a donation the Chamber or Children’s
Center.

2)
The Badges- It was decided to offer all
discounts to any and all women at CB during the weekend and not to use badges
or the bags for identification.

3)
Future plans include: a passport system, methods
of accounting for results, m
ore reliable ID system.

2.
The public is invited to a workshop sponsored by the Oregon Food Bank in

going to a local charity. Jenee will make a brief presentation on quick
plumbing solutions and tips around the home. Hello Dolly opens that weekend at
the Coaster. A growing committee working on the event are meeting immediately
after the WMM.

4.
CarolHun reported that the Gazette has been told that the tunnel closure will
be during the winter and that it will be evenings and that only one lane will
be closed at a time. Rich says he has heard varying stories, but what Carol
reported is the most recurring.

5.
Jeff reported that directors of three Chambers (Cannon Beach, Seaside and
Astoria/Warrenton) along with the director of CEDR (Clatsop
Economic Development Resources) will be having regular weekly or bi-weekly

been taken care of. See the current printing online at www.coastexplorermagazine.com/vm_cbmap/current.

9.
Ad sales for the 2010 Cannon Beach Magazine are underway. George encouraged
businesses to support this valuable welcoming piece with their ads. Ad sales
have dropped in the past three years due to the larger motels moving money out
of print advertising and a downturn in the economy affecting most everyone.
George described the magazine as a welcoming piece that distinguishes Cannon
Beach. Many competing towns would love to have such a piece to represent them.
Without the support of the advertisers, the magazine cannot exit. Gary
announced a new web component that is being added for 2010 at no extra cost. He
will release details soon. See the current magazine online at www.coastexplorermagazine.com/vm_cbm/current.

10.
Gary announced the next Social Media Meeting will be Sept 29th 830a
at Mo’s

11.
CarolHun reported that she has received calls and e-mail thinking her paper was
responsible for20the very negative review of a local restaurant. She wanted to
make it clear that it was the Daily Astorian and not the Gazette.

12.
This Saturday is SOLV’s Annual Fall Beach Cleanup. Register at City Hall
starting at 10a. www.solv.org/programs/fall_beach_cleanup.asp

13.

Items:

1.       Lodging Tax Increase?

2.
Oregon Food Bank Benefit Sept 24

3.
New Chamber Executive Director – Jeff Jewel

4.
Latinos in Cannon Beach

5.
Sixth Annual Cottage Tour

6.
Next Wednesday Morning Meeting – September 16, Mo’s, 8am

1.       City Manager Rich Mays
spoke about the possibility of a 1% increase in the city’s lodging tax
and how this money could be used. The current 6% generates approx $2M per year.
A 1% increase would bring an additional $300K. (note: the state collects 1% so
motel guests now pay 7%) State law requires that 70% of any new lodging tax
monies be spent on tourism. The remaining 30% may be spent as the city sees
fit. Mayor Mike Morgan spoke about the need and value of supporting the arts in
Cannon Beach. $210K would be split between various qualifying groups such as
the Cannon Beach Business Associates, Cannon Beach Arts Assn, History Center,
Tolovana Arts Colony, Coaster Theatre, Chamber, Gallery Group, etc. Each group
would receive an amount in proportio
n to its budget, except the Chamber which
would receive less. Rich estimates most groups would receive 20% of their
budgets. The funds would be administered by the Cannon Beach Business Associates
according to pre-determined recipients and amounts. Even though the 2009
Lodging Tax was down by 3.5%, this was only the second time in the tax’s
history that it was down. The current 6% city tax is among the lowest in the
state. Bob Necker asked about the school property and what would happen with
that once the school is moved. He questioned whether money should be set aside
for that. Rich said that the cost of that property (County owned) would be much
higher than the monies being discussed here. Some questioned the choice of the
Cannon Beach Business Associates as a recipient and as administrator since they
(those questioning) were never invited to be part of it. Rich mentioned that it
is true that the group may fold back into the Chamber and that nothing is set
at this point. He is putting these ideas out for discussion.

2.
BobN says there is an Oregon Food Bank benefit set for Sept 24 830am to 2pm at
Hallmark Resort (for info call 503-436-8044)

3.
Jeff Jewel was introduced and spoke about his excitement in landing this new
job. He was born and raised as an only child in Vincennes Indiana, an 18th
Century French Settlement. He was raised Catholic by his father, who owned a
shoe store and his mother who worked as an20administrative assistant for an
architect. His path to Cannon Beach went through Bloomington Indiana (Indiana
University), Austin Texas (Hotel Management and Easter Seals Special Events
Director), Portland Oregon and the North Coast (Muscular Dystrophy Regional
Fundraiser), Vincennes IN (Social Services Director & Chief of Staff to
Mayor), Mt Sterling Ohio (Village Administrator), Durango Colorado (Executive
Director of Colorado Housing) and back to Portland (Human Solutions – A
Community Development Corporation) His office is at the Chamber/Information
Center, but he will be about town getting to know the community. The Chamber is
hosting a Meet & Greet event tonight (Wed) at Haystack Gardens from 5-7pm.

4.
BobN mentioned that the disconnect with the Latino residents in Cannon Beach
needs to be addressed. JeanieM mentioned that Sept 15 is Mexican Independence
day.

5.
The 6th Annual Cottage Tour, the History Centers main fundraiser, is
September 12, 2009. Get you $15 tickets now (includes reception). See http://www.cbhistory.org/events.php.

Beach. Gary commented that the Chamber Marketing Committee is working on
targeted pieces that would serve them.

3.
Debbie shared info and recommened The Wedding Guide to anyone catering to that
business. The website is www.bravowedding.com.
Debbe says there is more demand than supply for wedding cakes and recommend
that as a local business opportunity.

Jeanie announced that a group of Costa Ricans will be arriving September 21st
as part of an annual program. They will be staying with families here.
Stephanie will be hosting one of them. Jeanie too.

Mo’s managers, says that starting September 16, Mo’s is available.
They are not open for breakfast on Wednesdays this time of year, but will have
free coffee available and rolls and muffins will be available for purchase.
After a short discussion, it was decided
to accept the History Center’s
offer for the Sept 9th meeting (the Chamber was not available on the

McDonald and the Tolovana Inn for hosting WMM for the past 3 months. An

$109,000 of grant money from the city will be awarded to attending recipients.
[The groups have already been chosen so don’t be expecting to get any

and table setting.

13.
85K of the 100K 2009 Cannon Beach Magazines have been distributed. The 2010
magazine in underway. Ad reservations are being taken now. If advertisers
don’t step up, the magazines future is in serious jeopardy. George thinks
the magazine, as a welcoming piece and as a marketing piece, is very important
to the image of Cannon Beach. The loss of the magazine or a drop in quality or
size would not reflect well on Cannon Beach at a time when competition for the
tourist dollar has never been higher.

14.

venture was worthwhile. The idea for a November 27, 2009 event was well
received. Debbie will contact Dena, who spearheaded it last year. Julie says if
we act fast, we can still get something into the Oregonian.

17.

this year. This time at the Seaside Convention Center on Thursday Sept 17th.

Julie and Valerie are also heading up the return of the Chamber Auction. The
date is not set, but it will be in the Spring. Merchandise and service

important fundraiser for the Chamber and its marketing effort. Efforts are

Next Wednesday Morning Meeting – August 26th Tolovana inn , 8am

1.       Gary reported that the
social networking meetings are involving marketing discussions. Next meeting is
changed to Monday Aug 31st at 830a at Tolovana Inn.

2.
The 2010 Winter Olympics will take place in and around Vancouver BC. Abby says
Travel Oregon will have a booth there. Wendy has heard that the benefit of
having the Olympics near is likely to come in the months and years that follow.
Some mentioned that Vancouver residents who will not be attending Olympic
events are encouraged to take their vacations during that time. These people
are good prospects for a trip to Cannon Beach. Gary encouraged folks to use
Twitter, Facebook, etc to reach these people. George suggested using our
websites to suggest and to tie into the Olympics.

Wendy says Rich Mays (City Manager) will address the WMM next month about the
Cannon Beach Room Tax. Several lodging people at the meeting said they were
having vacancies this summer and were having to discount rates. This has not
happened in past summers. Room Tax dollars will be down at a time when the need
to market and promote Cannon Beach is great. George encouraged everyone,
especially lodging people, to communicate with the City Council members about
the current situation and the need to be proactive to keep the flow of people
to the motels and Room Tax dollars to the City. To e-mail them individually or
as a group go to http://www.ci.cannon-beach.or.us/~City/council.html.

4.
Cynthia Elliott’s resignation from the
Chamber Board has left a vacancy to be filled by appointment of the Board.
Chamber members who are interested are encouraged to let someone know.

5.
Tim pointed out that as a member of OCVA, Oregon Coast Visitors Assn, the
Chamber receives inquiries through them. {my inserted note} - Because of the
lack of current funds, these inquiries (as many as 700 in two weeks) are not
being acted upon. {my inserted note 2} – Your dues and sponsorships are
more important now than ever.

6.
Abby says the Today Show asked for and received footage from Surfsand Resort to
possibly air next Tuesday on a “Last Minute Getaway” segment.

8.
Gary says Savor Cannon Beach (along the
Childrens Center’s Wine walk) will take place March 12-14. See further
notes on #4 below (8/12/09 WMM)

9.
Gary reported that the next Map meeting will be Tuesday Aug 25, 530pm at City
Hall. The current map will be reviewed and a second printing will be looked at.

10.
The Annual Cottage Tour, the History Centers main fundraiser
is September 12, 2009. Get you $15 tickets now (includes reception).

11.
Jenee says the Wildlife refuge needs towels donated. Conact her at jpmushen at aol.com.

12.
George reported that he was recently approached by William Eldridge Ph. D. of
Cannon Beach, seeking seed money for a world-class, international, educational,
and community service center called The Oregon Institute for Peace, Spiritual
Development & Community Transformation. For info contact eldridge.3 at osu.edu or visit www.wdeldridge.com

13.
September 2nd will be the last date Tolovana Inn
is available for WMM. A new venue is being sought. JeffT suggested Pig
‘n’ Pancake.

14.
