Reminder: Today is Wednesday and the Wednesday Morning Meeting at 8am at Mo's.

Minutes for the Wednesday morning meeting on Oct. 7.

Taken by Theresa Myers

Attendance: Good. All present except those absent (including George Vetter).

Wendy Higgins (I’m told) gave an update on the WOW weekend schedule of
events and participants.
There was some discussion of the Warrenton Walmart and a flyer passed
around for a meeting Oct. 18 at the Columbian Theater in Astoria to
discuss any possibility of stopping it. (3 p.m.)
Jeff Jewel had plans for landscaping around the Chamber
building/Visitor Center. Plans were provided by Hank Johnson.
There was some discussion of the water-bacterial count in CB area,
based on the presentation by Surfrider to the City Council.
Jeanne McLaughlin mentioned that there are a number of Spanish/English
classes starting up in the CB area. Most are mentioned in the Gazette,
Oct. 1 issue.
Wendy noted that September seemed to have been a busy month and other
agreed. Jeff Jewel said that there are still close to 900 people a day
coming through the Visitor Center, booking 40 to 50 rooms a day. There
are plans to step-up merchandising at the Center as a means to raise
revenue.
There was a general discussion on the need for signage in the downtown
area, directing people to the restrooms, the Visitor Center, the
beach, etc. Using the success of getting the Walking Map done in
conjunction with the City, perhaps if the WMM group came up with a
proposal for signage the City would also help. A puffin theme for the
signs was discussed. Bob Neroni noted that there is some leftover
money from the Walking Map second printing that may be able to go
toward starting a sign/directory project for downtown.
Jeff Jewel said that he, Tracy Abel and Mark P. will be attending a
workshop on eco-tourism this week. He also mentioned that the Chamber
is planning some winter educational classes, including customer
service, Windows and Quickbooks, and Employment Law updates. Chamber
membership renewals are going well and there have been some new
enrollments as well.
Gary Hayes said the social media (Twitter / Facebook) group will be
meeting on the second and fourth Tuesdays, 8:30 a.m. at Mo’s until
further notice. Social media is currently being heavily used for
marketing and can be a good tool for keeping track of visitor feedback
to local businesses. A meeting place where wifi is available would be
preferred.
Some upcoming events were noted: Children Center Fundraiser is Friday,
Oct. 9 at Tolovana Inn; Firefighters Dinner is Saturday, Oct. 10 at
the Christian Conference Center; The History Center will be honoring
local “History Heroes” at their meeting on Nov. 21st. EVOO Cooking
School has a new class on cooking bistro style with a skillet – a
lower priced class than the full-course dinner class.
