Merger

Vote Creates New Association, Sets Course for Strategic Direction

May 10, 2010 - Oregon Restaurant Association (ORA) membership voted to merge with the Oregon Lodging Association (OLA). OLA membership had previously voted and approved the merger on April 13, 2010. The new entity will be named Oregon Restaurant and Lodging Association (ORLA). The merger will take effect by July 1, 2010. The newly formed association will be one of the largest trade associations and political advocates in Oregon representing over 3,500 members, and advocating for 9,000 food service locations and over 2,500 lodging establishments in Oregon. “A larger, unified association speaking with one voice on behalf of the broader hospitality and tourism industry on policy issues not only makes political sense, but also affords us the opportunity to provide a greater level of service to our members,” states Pat McShane, OLA’s current chair.

1. Angela Freeman is a licensed acupuncturist at Cannon Beach Spa. Angela talked about the benefits of Chinese Medicine and the use of the BioMeridian machine in allergy elimination. 18 billion dollars are spent annually on allergy related illnesses – most just give temporary relief. Angela approaches allergies from a holistic view treating the root not just the symptoms. Patients are tested for sensitivities. Those who have used the BioMeridian allergy elimination therapy have seen immediate results. Pressure points that can give relief to allerygy symptoms are 1. Above the eyes a the inside of the eyebrows. 2. On each side at the base of the nose. 3. Just behind the wrist bone back from the little finger. 4. The fleshy area between the thumb and index finger. 2. Wendy: Motel Tax revenues were up by 15% this past quarter, but last year Stephanie Inn was closed for the qtr.

3, Gary: Be prepared to defend the 1% increase in the motel tax. We are still the lowest percentage in Oregon. We are the only place that collects the tax that has not been spend any of it on promotion. The increase on a high end room - $300 – is $3. Motel tax dollars in Cannon Beach go to support such programs as the Haystack Awareness Program, the Children’s Center, Public Art, grants to non-profit organizations, the Shuttle, etc. George and Jim encouraged people to respond to criticism by pointing out the benefits visitors to Cannon Beach enjoy.

4. Patrick called attention to the e-mail sent out this morning by Les McNary about the 4 buses that would be arriving in CB at 945am. See last week’s note below for details.

1. New at today’s meeting was Seaside’s Les McNary lmcnary at theoregonshore.com. Les is the guide on the bus that brings cruise ship guests to Cannon Beach and Seaside. Les says Sundial Travel is contracted for the tours. The next bus to Cannon Beach is Wednesday May 12th. For the Cruise ship schedule, see http://www.portofastoria.com/portfacilities/cruise/cruiseinformation/2010cruiseschedule.html. Buses leave Astoria at 9am. The first stop is Tolovana Wayside for the Haystack Rock view and the restrooms. Then to the Chamber where guests are free to roam/shop for about 45 minutes. Les recommends that we have simple maps available. He says the packets that we have given out in the past have been good. When asked how he describes the difference between Seaside and Cannon Beach, he said Seaside is “family” and Cannon Beach is “artsy”

2. Nala / Haystack Rock Awareness Program (HRAP) is city sponsored with strong community support. HRAP just had its 25th anniversary. The tufted puffins are here. Nala observed more than 40 at a glance the other day. The season is underway. Nala and her crew will be on the beach for all daylight low tides. 78,000 people were greeted by HRAP last year including 70 groups. Part of HRAP’s approach is outreach to schools to orient groups before they get to the Rock. The most common creatures observed are anemones, barnacles and sea stars. Nala passed around cards and everyone had fun pretending to be one of these creatures. Friends of Haystack Rock supports the Haystack Rock Awareness Program in cooperation with the City of Cannon Beach, promoting the preservation and protection of the intertidal life and birds that inhabit the Marine Garden and the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge at Haystack Rock. Keith Chandler chairs that group. HRAP has 8 staff members. Volunteers are welcome. The final volunteer training for this season is Saturday June 5 from 1-5p at City Hall, followed on Sunday by at-the-Rock action. Contact Nala at cardillo at ci.cannon-beach.or.us. More HRAP at http://www.ci.cannon-beach.or.us/~Natural/HRAP/hrap-program.html.

3, Rich: Good news! Motel Tax revenues for the quarter ended 3/31/2010 were up from 2009.

4. Spring Unveiling Weekend Report: Motels reported either full or very close to it for Friday and especially Saturday nights. Kristine, Escape Lodging, said that on Saturday, when trying to book restaurant reservations for guests, they could not find anything before 830pm. Megan, Mo’s, said they were slow both Friday and Saturday, but Sunday was good. She thinks all the activity was too far away from them. Margo and Valerie reported good business in their apparel and book stores respectively. [Business at El Mundo For Men was not so good]. Coaster Theatre opening of “Almost, Maine” was well attended as was the performance at Cannon Beach Gallery of “After Magritte”, which Margo reported will be repeated again this summer. George reported that his Friday Unveiling was as well attended as his Saturday one. Overall traffic was good but not what he had hoped for. Jim at IceFire and Bob at NW by NW Gallery reported good traffic/dollars during the week, but not what they had anticipated and hoped for on the weekend. Kathy, La Luna Loca, felt that the crowd was more varied than in the past and that it consisted of more than just people here for art. Bob, NW by NW Gallery, felt that the 12 Days of Earth Day had a negative impact on Spring Uveiling.

5. Tim Krupa / Chamber Marketing Chair: The Chamber Marketing Committee is moving forward with its $40k plan for marketing and PR. An RFP is being put together for the purpose of finding an organization and/or people to carry out both functions. The updated website is nearing completion.

6. George reported that he attended the meeting yesterday in Seaside where a consortium of State, County and City representatives presented what has been done to this point in the study of how to alleviate the flooding problem on Highway 101 between Cannon Beach and Seaside. The firm doing the study is North West Hydraulic Consultants – the firm who just completed work on 101 in Tillamook. Their goal is to eliminate the majority of the flooding. They won’t be able to stop flooding that comes once in a hundred years. This was a public meeting where residents were invited to participate. The study is expected to take thru this Fall. At that point, the cost will be known and money will be sought. There were about 40 people at the meeting. No further meetings were announced. Send input to Clatsop County Transportation & Development 1100 Olney Avenue, Astoria, Oregon 97103, 503-325-8631 roads at co.clatsop.or.us

7. Rich: The 1% increase in the Transient Lodging Tax was passed by City Council last night. It will take effect on July 1. The money is earmarked by State statute for the promotion of tourism. The City has further earmarked it for Tourism and Arts Programs. A 5-member commission will be appointed by the Council to review applications from organizations for disbursement of an estimated $210K. Up to $21K (10%) will be held in reserve for any last minute opportunities. Individuals interested in sitting on the 5-member commission can apply at City Hall.

8. Wendy: Reminder: Coming live via broadcast this Friday May 7th 2010 at the Seaside North Coast Family Fellowship is a leadership seminar. You can still get in. contact Wendy 503-436-2241 wendy at theoceanlodge.com or visit www.chick-fil-aleadercast.com/findasite.

4. Spring Unveiling. George passed out brochures/schedules. More can be picked up at Haystack Gallery and Bronze Coast Gallery. George, saying that the WMM is his ‘business family’, did a sneak-preview unveiling of a 25x37 canvas giclee - “Morning Rays”. He then gave away a 12x18 paper giclee of “Morning Rays”. This went to Angela Freeman who placed the closest guess to how many people are on the WMM e-mail list (174). The weekend is filled with unveilings – and not just in the galleries. JP’s is unveiling their new Menu. “Almost, Maine” opens this Friday, April 30, with a no-host wine tasting in the theatre lobby at 7:15 p.m., curtain up at 8 pm. and a complimentary champagne/dessert reception following the performance. http://www.coastertheatre.com/AlmostMaine.html. Stephanie says Primary Elements Gallery will focus on demonstrations with a Wine Bar on Saturday from 6-8pm. John at Sweet Basil’s will have specials on Friday and Saturday night. All businesses are encouraged to “Unveil” what they can to create more excitement for our visitors. Northwest by Northwest Gallery will charge $5 at their door with proceeds to benefit the Food Bank. Inn at Cannon Beach and Ocean Lodge will each have an artist featured that weekend. Gallery unveilings and demonstrations begin Friday and run thru Sunday. On Saturday there is an unveiling every half hour except during the lunch hour. See the weekend schedule online through www.cannon-beach.net/springunveiling .

6. Carol: Farmer’s market 2010 weekly Tuesday run kicks off June 15. There is still need for musicians. Contact Carol carol at countrymedia.net.

7. Bob Mushen: Doesn’t want to use this venue for politics, but wanted to clear up the question of why he was not taking a stand on LNG in Clatsop County. 1. Ethics. As a standing commissioner, he is sworn to uphold the law as it is currently written. 2. Taking a stand now would surely exclude him from discussion and voting on related issues as a commissioner.

8. Debra Birkby: Debra introduced herself saying she is a candidate for County Commissioner District 5. She said she is not here to campaign but did want to let people know that she supports small business. She made it clear that she was not running against Bob Mushen but was rather running for the seat. Visit her website www.debrabirkby.com.

9. Wendy: Reminder: Coming live via broadcast May 7th 2010 at the Seaside North Coast Family Fellowship is a leadership seminar. For more info contact wendy at theoceanlodge.com or visit www.chick-fil-aleadercast.com/findasite.

12. Kathy asked Bob Mushen what he was referring to in his campaign brochure “Convinced the Port of Astoria to fund a major project in Cannon Beach”. Bob said he is waiting for City Manager Rich Mayes to give him the go-ahead to release details. It has something to do with the Cannon Beach Trail.

13. Melissa (cadwkram at comcast.net): There will be a Cinco de Mayo (5May) dinner at the school.

14. Carmen promises a good time at the Sea Ranch Business After Hours Thursday May 13, 430pm

A recent tsunami drill where the students hiked up Spruce Street took 17 minutes and more for the smallest students.

19 . Bill: Cannon Beach Food Systems: The back pack program sends out 34 per week. The food pantry is open weekly experiencing 185 visits per month. The entire program is solvent thru this calendar year.

20. Tim: The Chamber website overhaul is nearing completion. Photos of all listed businesses (370 in all) will be posted on the site. Businesses are encouraged to either give permission to use an image from their web site or supply one to Tim at CB Spa (drtkrupa at pacifier.com)

No more than I had sent the Notes off I realized I had not included info about the Hiway 101 flooding meeting on May 4 at 430pm at Bob Chisholm Center in Seaside. Thanks to Lesle for the link - http://www.co.clatsop.or.us/news.asp?deptid=8 <http://www.co.clatsop.or.us/news.asp?deptid=8&pageid=&pressID=2759> &pageid=&pressID=2759. I also left out my announcement about Ryan Dewey’s “Cannon Beach Hardware” and Beer in Midtown’s Haystack Square along with two other new businesses opening soon – Lush Wine Bar and the Irish Table Restaurant. This note came in from Genevieve “George, I was wondering if you could add to the comment about walk-in acupuncture that it is a sliding scale from $15-35 on Fridays 12-5pm. There is no verification of income, you decide what you want to pay. Thanks so much, and thanks for compiling the notes. Genevieve”. Mimi Butler / The Buttery has withdrawn from her May 26 Show & Tell date so that is now available.

2. Michael Burkett - Editor of the Cannon Beach Citizen and the North Coast Citizen: Cannon Beach Citizen turns 2 years old in two weeks. It is owned by the East Oregonian Publishing Company which owns several community newspapers including the Daily Astorian. Community newspapers are doing better than most because they print news not available anywhere else. The paper is printed by the Astorian as is the Cannon Beach Gazette. Two local business owner, Valerie Ryan and Watt Childress, write columns for the paper. The paper sometimes features those who are not advertisers just because there is a good story. Michael welcomes calls or emails with ideas and suggestions for stories. He passed out, fresh off the press, the “Living Green” insert (16,500 distribution), and the “Spring Unveiling” insert (19,500 distribution). Michael's radio show on KMUN Community Radio on Friday at 930am will focus on 12 Days of Earth Day and Spring Unveiling with guests Jeff Jewel, Ed Johnson and Valerie Ryan. Inn at Cannon Beach and Ocean Lodge will each have an artist featured that weekend.

5. Patrick: The Council worksession last night at City Hall was well attended and reached a “cumbaya” (Valerie’s word) conclusion. The composition of the 5-member committee to review and evaluate requests for $ will focus on expertise with all 5 members being chosen at large. The issue was raised as to how reservations already made would be affected by the increase. Council will look at this. Another issue discussed was whether a member or representative of a group requesting $ could sit on the committee. It was pointed out that with the limited number of people available in our small town and the fact that many people are involved in multiple groups and organizations, it could be very difficult to populate a committee with people who have no association with a requesting group. The tax/ordinance will be on the next Council agenda.
