2. Debbie: Sandcastle was a big success. The police counted 1060 cars entering the beach at Tolovana Wayside (the only beach access). Jeff reported that Officer Rob Schultz estimated the overall crowd between 21 and 24 thousand. Jeff had done 13 phone radio interviews on Friday. The weather was perfect. It was reported that parking was full downtown even though there were not many people downtown. For next year, Sue, at Land’s End Motel, suggested signage at the foot of 2nd Street directing people to the event. People kept asking them. The downtown BBQ and Concert in the Park were poorly attended with reports of just 15 people at the Concert. George suggested that many people on the beach did not know about the BBQ or the Concert and suggested having someone with a megaphone moving up and down the beach making announcements including what time judging completes, reminders of the incoming tide, events in town, etc. Jeff TerHar suggested closing off 2nd Street downtown like is down for the car shows and have a sculpture or two done there, possibly several days before. To avoid the mass entrance and exodus of cars and people, George would like to see the sculptures last through Sunday allowing people to come and go (and stay) more leisurely. The tides are predictable. The plots could be placed so that the next high tide would not destroy them. A new committee could be formed that would stay on the beach with the goal of protecting the sculptures from those few who prefer to destroy them rather than leave them for others to enjoy. In past years, it had been kids (whose parents sit back and watch) who have destroyed the sculptures, not the tide. The incoming tide washes smooth the surface, but the sculptures above water level survive and could and would be enjoyed into the night and again the next day. Tommy expressed his liking of the way the sculptures are gone with the next high tide.
3, Show & Tell. Rick Diamond (and brother Jeff) both work for Worldwide Merchant – a website design company founded in 1997 in Arizona. Rick lives in Canon Beach and Jeff in Bay City. Their parents retired to Bay City. When Rick came to visit them, he also visited Cannon Beach and fell in love with the town and moved here. Jeff lives in Bay City. Worldwide Merchant is a full service web company giving the customer complete control in choosing and changing templates and content. Rick’s specialty is e-commerce. The company released Version 3.0 in January. They can get a website up for a client in 24 to 48 hours. $1000 is a high-end site with them. Most are less. Hosting with them is required as all their templates are part of their database. They wrote their own shopping cart. 4. Jennifer: The 2nd Tuesday for the 2010 Farmer’s Market was yesterday. 1200 visitors, 20 vendors and 13 volunteers sold, browsed, bought, tasted and listened. Market is every Tuesday 2-6pm thru Sept 28th. Locals are encouraged to take advantage of the 5-6pm hour. The selection is still good as vendors bring enough to last. 5. Kim: Plein Air and More – This Saturday June 26, 2010. Artists will demonstrate how to paint, sculpt and photograph Cannon Beach, showing us the town and coastline through their eyes. Artists will be at work throughout town from 11am to 4pm. Once completed, the artists take their work to the gallery representing them and it is available for purchase. Northwest by Northwest Gallery will have Joe Adams carving in front of their gallery, but photographer Christopher Burkett will not be able to make it after all. 6. Bob Necker: Plans for Sunday July 4th start off with the Great Cannon Beach Puffin Watch, the 1pm Parade, followed by a concert in the park, circus activities for the kids, and at 9pm Firedancers in the park. View, print and share full details at www.cannon-beach.net/events/4th

8. Tim Krupa: The Chamber Marketing Committee had their first meeting yesterday with DVA (see more on DVA in prior notes), the firm chosen by the Chamber. A survey will be sent out from the Chamber early next week. The survey will be electronic and will need to be responded to right away.
9. Jeanie: The Costa Rican Exchange program needs host families for September. There will be an informational meeting at 2pm Sunday June 27th at the Pioneer Presbyterian Church on Highway 101 by Camp Rilea. For more info see www.oregonpartners.net. I just got through my photos and will upload them to the Internet overnight. For a link to them go to www.cannon-beach.net. The photos appear in chronological order. As I was leaving the beach after the event around 4pm I stopped at the entrance to talk to Darrel Walker who had been assigned by the Police Dept to count cars. He told me he counted 1060 cars that entered the beach at Tolovana. That didn’t count me and others who were out before he got there.
What a great day! Number 46 was charmed. I can’t remember the last time we had such outstanding weather for our Sandcastle Contest. And what a great crowd! I was there from 730am till 4pm and didn’t witness anyone having anything other than a great time. Organizers Kelli Truax Taylor (Bruce’s Candy Kitchen) and Debbie Nelson (Basketcase) deserve the highest praise along with Chamber Executive Director Jeff Jewel (Rumored to be in the current Coaster Theatre production). Followed by John Nelson and Coaster Construction for equipment and time not only for today’s event but also on Wednesday for the “Sam’s Dragon” sculpture (designed and orchestrated by Sam Steidel of Steidel’s Art) See “Sam’s Dragon” photos at www.cannon-beach.net/sandcastle/sandphotos2010. Without the work of today’s layout crew, Sandcastle couldn’t happen. Don Boehm of Boehm Construction, as he has done for many years alongside Sam Steidel, led that effort without Sam this year. Mike McEwan/McEwan Construction supplied the equipment and dug the water holes today and piled the sand on Wednesday for “Sam’s Dragon”. Debbie was in charge of the judges and Sharon Visser from the Information Center organized and led the sales tent – which was a great success. Jim McDonald and Tolovana Inn came through with the tents and staff to put them up and tear them down. Carol Hungerford of the Gazette headed the Information/Lost & Found tent with Shari from her staff. Robin Risley, a long time Sandcastle supporter and enthusiast, was on the Sandcastle committee and also was a judge. The City supplied the police (thanks Chief Haliburton) and workers to keep traffic flowing to and from the beach and in and out of town. It’s 9pm now and I just got off the phone with Kelli. She says her husband Brian, who has been helping her out all along, is still out collecting traffic signs that were put out for the day.

2. Jeff & George: Newly elected members of the Chamber Board were announced yesterday at the Chamber General Membership meeting. The four chosen by the vote of the membership are Scott Kruickshank/Martin Hospitality, Kristine Gottsch/Escape Lodging, Jim McDonald/Tolovana Inn (all three year terms) and Sue Meyers/Land’s End Motel (two year term). Scott and Jim are current Board members. Kristine and Sue will take their seats at the July Board Meeting (July 20). The board is rounded out by Kelli Truax Taylor, Margo Dueber, Tracy Abel, Tim Krupa and George Vetter. Leaving the Board are Carol Hungerford and Rich Mays.
3, Jeff/Kristine/Tracy: After Monday’s interviews with the top two contenders, the Chamber Marketing Committee chose DVA Advertising and Public Relations. DVA is a Bend, Oregon-based agency helping clients manage brands, develop marketing strategies and produce creative solutions. www.dvaadv.com. Their work and success with Bandon was highlighted by Jeff.
4. Jennifer: Opening day for the 2010 Farmer’s Market was yesterday. 1000 visitors browsed, bought, tasted and listened. Market is every Tuesday 2-6pm thru Sept 28th. www.cannonbeachmarket.org.
5. Barbara Nichols: Four Paws on the Beach is a pet store in Manzanita. Barbara and husband Dan, leaving their software careers behind, opened the store in December 2007 on the heels of the giant wind storm. They carry fun collars & leashes, toys, treats, apparel, dog and cat food and art. The quality cat and dog food is without wheat, corn, soy or by-products. Some of the brands are Merrick, Solid Gold, Wellness, Castor & Pollux, Taste of the Wild, Canidea and others. They have two big dogs: Newfoundlands, Shanti and Indie, who hang out at the store. They have done water rescue work, obedience and agility. Four Paws on the Beach organizes Muttzanita on Saturday August 14th 2010: http://www.muttzanita.com. It is a fun doggie festival with lots of events such as the Chuck-it toss, Doggie musical chair, Pet Talent Show, Pet Fashion Show, Pet Parade,etc. The event benefits United Paws, a local all volunteer spay neuter organization. The store is at 144 Laneda Ave, open 7-Days 10-5 (later when traffic justifies) so come on in and sniff around. Call 503-368-FIDO or visit the website at http://www.fourpawsonthebeach.com. They are always looking for local artists who make dog or cat related art who will work on consignment basis.
6. Jeff: Reservations for Sandcastle plots will still be taken Friday. Two masters plots and 28 others are currently reserved. George suggested creating a group of plots for anyone wanting to register at the event. This group would not be part of the competition and would not receive t-shirts.
7. Tracy: Lush Wine Bar is nearly ready to open. The Irish Table and Cannon Beach Hardware have opened.
8. Stephen: Fido Friendly magazine featured Arch Cape Inn recently.
9. Wendy: Sinclair Estate Vineyards, Walla Walla’s newest family owned boutique winery, will be at the Ocean Lodge Wednesday June 23rd from 3-6pm 800-321-6304..
10. Wendy: Mary Marquiss will be have at the Ocean Lodge Sept 26-30 for a watercolor painting en plein air workshop. Register through Ocean Lodge 888-777-4047 or www.theoceanlodge.com.

13. Free Historical Walking Tour program in downtown Cannon Beach. Tours will begin at Whale Park at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays in June and July (weather permitting), and will last approximately a half hour, taking guests to the Coaster Theater and back. Topics covered will include Native American history, early exploration, Lewis and Clark, the CB cannon, Terrible Tilly, town development, and many historical sites in downtown CB. Please let your guests know about this free program that will enhance their stay in CB.
14. Tracy: Does anyone know where or how to get QuickBooks or comparable accounting software legally free. George pointed out that when someone buys a full version (as opposed to an upgrade) they retain a full license to the original version and can give that to someone else. Rick warned about using trial versions of software, then being locked out until you purchase it.
15. Jeff & George: With the affordable housing challenges facing Cannon Beach, upon Mayor Mike Morgan’s request, the Chamber Board authorized Jeff to do what is necessary to keep the Cannon Beach Community Development Corporation intact even though there are no immediate project plans. State and Federal monies that could become available would be available to a CDC that would not be available otherwise. Jeff has worked with CDC’s. For now what is needed are quarterly meetings and annual renewals.
16. Stephen: At yesterday’s Chamber General Membership meeting, the financial report revealed that the Chamber has gone from approx $50K in the red in the beginning of 2009 to approx $50K in the black now. This $100K turnaround is the result of the work, effort and support of many people. Quite a few of those people participate in these Wednesday Morning Meetings. Stephen is not only impressed with what has happened, but also by what is planned.

2. Dale Shafer: Dale is a realtor (www.cannonbeachrealestate.com) with Windermere Cronin & Caplan Realty Group, Inc. (www.windermere.com). Her background is in city planning and mortgage operations. She has also served as a judge. Her civic minded side has her a the current President of the Board at the Cannon Beach History Center and Museum (www.cbhistory.org). The History Center has two new exhibits per year plus the Film Festival, Cottage Tour, music offerings, an annual calendar, a cookbook, and a gift shop. The semi-annual membership meeting is June 26th at 930am at the History Center. Dale is wedding officiate. She says her $100 fee is the most reasonable around. To stay at the top of her game, Dale practices taekwondo. She has her black belt and teaches taekwondo.
3, Tim Krupa: For all the world to see, the remodeled Chamber Website (www.cannonbeach.org) is live. This is just the beginning. Everyone is invited/asked to give feedback and submit photos to chamber at cbor.us. Most pages offer two boxes for purchase of ads. The price of these ads start at approx $2 per day.
4. Tim Krupa: Six high quality RFP’s for the Chamber’s Branding/Marketing campaign have been selected for the second round of scrutiny. Interviews will take place Monday and with a selection expected on Wednesday.
5. Debbie Nelson: The community build of the dragon is Wednesday June 16th from 1p-5p. Debbie has 10 builders for this so far. Let her know if you are available to help. For the Sandcastle Contest, more teams are still need. George suggested a last minute (on-site) registration option this year – to assign a plot at a cost, but to not include those in the competition. After the contest this year, on the step of the Chamber’s back deck will be a barbeque at 230pm. Jean: From 7a-11a at the Legion will be the annual buffet breakfast.[from last week’s notes] Debbie: Sandcastle Day is June 19. Teams are needed. There are currently only 10. Many more are needed. The community build of a dragon will be Wednesday June 16 from 1-5pm. A sculpted model by Sam Steidel was passed around. Please let Debbie know if you are interested in participating in the community build or helping out with the preparation, execution or cleanup of the contest. Tees, sweats, hats, mugs, posters, kids hoodies are available at the Chamber and at some stores. Display posters can be picked up at the Chamber. 6. This month’s Business After Hours is by Gary Hayes / Pelican Production / Coast Explorer Magazine / Cannon Beach Magazine. It is tomorrow (June 10) at the Chamber from 5 to 7pm. Gary made a wild, factually-challenged promise of what the first 50 people will receive.
7. Jeff Jewel: The Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce will be holding its annual meeting on Tuesday, June 15th at 8:00am at the Chamber Hall, 207 N. Spruce Street in Cannon Beach. There will be coffee, baked treats and conversation from 8:00am to 8:30am followed by the business segment of the meeting. Election results will first on the agenda so make sure your ballot is returned by Monday, June 14th at 5:00pm! “Everyone is more than welcome, please join us!”
8. Jeff Jewel: Jeff and Elaine Norling will begin doing a Cannon Beach business article in Coast River Business Journal. Jeff is already doing them in the Gazette and Citizen.
9. Jeff: Five travel writers/tour operators will be in town with Jeff on Saturday and then in July he will host a group from Germany.
10. “Rumors” by Neil Simon opens June 18 with Jeff at the Coaster Theatre - http://www.coastertheatre.com/Rumors.html. .
11. Stephanie: Brad Lorang of cascade locks is making a relief sculpture of a sand castle for display in the gallery. If time permits, he will make a small one also which Stephanie intends to give to the City. [from last week’s notes] June is Plein Air month as declared by the Cannon Beach Gallery Group. Plein Air is art painted outside in the open air. Saturday June 26 is the Gallery Groups 2nd Annual Plein Air and More event. 17 Artists will pick a spot in town and begin work at 11am. At 4pm those artists and their work will be on display and offered for sale in the member galleries of the Gallery Group. www.cbgallerygroup.com. Call Molly at Modern Villa Gallery 503-436-2428.
12. Jean: If you have a van or pickup and can be at the Library on Friday July 2 at 9am to help haul books, it would be very much appreciated. The Book Sale is the Library’s main annual fundraiser. DVD’s and CD’s too. [from prior notes] Got books? Don’t need them? Donate them to the Library for their 4th July Book Sale. Drop them off any time. If not open, leave them at back door/porch.
13. George: Last night in a City Council Work Session, future use of the Cannon Beach Elementary School was discussed. Wendy says the property is currently owned by the School Board, but will revert back to the County if the school moves. The School Board has 4 schools in the tsunami zone and is looking to consolidate them into a campus out of the tsunami zone with a target date of 2014. The City would have to buy from the School Board, the County or both depending how things end up. The likely use at this point would be a park with the possibility of saving the gym building for its historical value. Input/ideas can go to council at cbor.us
14. Last week’s sonic boom left some confused and other scared. With tsunami on people’s minds and in the news these days, shaking of the earth to any degree can cause concern. Bob Necker suggested that a phone tree could/should be set up. Rick Diamond spoke of his experience in another community where 5 key people were designated as those who would be the first to know of any danger or lack thereof and would each have access to a website where they could post the info for all to see. Gary Hayes reminded all that texting is something which could be operational even when phones calls cannot be made.
15. [After the meeting] From Rich Mays. At the City Potluck this Monday at 6:00 pm at the Presbyterian Church, four kids from Coaster Theatre will entertain with solos and group songs. Please spread the word.
16. [from prior notes] Jennifer Williamson: The third season of the Farmer’s Market kicks off Tuesday June 15 at 2pm with 22 vendors, an ice cream social, a food basket raffle, music, cut flowers, fruits, veggies, meats, breads and more in the parking lot in front of City Hall at Gower and Hemlock Streets. The Restaurant of the week will be the Wayfarer with music by Salty Dog. The Market runs Tuesdays from 2-6pm thru Sept 28 with varied restaurants and musicians each week.
