2.     Tonight at 7pm at Lush Wine Bar: Local Live Music by Paul Dueber,
Bill Steidel, Stan Timperley & Peter Dueber.  

3.     Nala: HRAP is seeing between 120 and 250 people per hour at Haystack
Rock during low tides. Nala shared photos of the one oyster catcher couple
and their chick(s). More oyster catchers are nesting on nearby rocks, but
only this one at Haystack.  

4.     George: Three positions are open on the City Council. Incumbents
Nancy Giasson, Sam Steidel and Mayor Mike Morgan are currently the only
applicants for these positions. The deadline is Aug 24th. 50 signatures must
be gathered and verified as voters in order to have one's name on the

5.     Kristine Gottsch / Chamber Marketing Committee Chair: DVA Advertising
and Public Relations, recently contracted by the Chamber, has completed the
logo, tagline ("Come for the Ocean, Stay for the Rest"), stationery and
member decals. Those were shared at the meeting along with explanations.
Also shared were 4 campaign concept options - each with a different
approach. #1 Souvenir (the least favorite of all) #2 Watercolor (11 votes)
#3 Paradise (13 votes) #4 Dichotomy (12 votes). DVA is recommending media
buys in the Seattle area of 10'x22' billboards (called posters by the
industry), Seattle Metropolitan Magazine, Sunset Magazine, Sunset.com,
Journey Magazine (WA AAA) & Journey Magazine e-newsletter. The extent of the
campaign will depend on the TAC funds received from the City. DVA's ideas
for non-traditional efforts included 1. Signage in dog parks at dog level
such as "Wouldn't you rather be off leash at Cannon Beach?". 2. Associate
Cannon Beach with Portland's Sand in the City sandcastle event through
sponsorship or reciprocal agreement with Impact Northwest. 3. Create a
Dungeness crab race at Pike Place Market. 4. Form a currency for Cannon
Beach - Sand Dollars. 5. Cannon Beach Balls- Distribute at concert venues in
Seattle and Portland. 6. Etc. Stop by the Chamber for more info. E-mail

6.  Sue: John Cook, glass blower in Seaside, has created glass sand dollars
that could be used in a promotion.  

7.  Valerie/Kathy: In the new tagline, "Come for the Ocean, Stay for the
Rest", what is the rest and how can we be promoting it? A campaign should
bring out what makes Cannon Beach different/special - eg. no national chain
stores, no parking meters, no stop lights, friendly people, lush
landscaping, quaint cottages and storefronts, etc.   

8.  Kathy: Traffic delays on Highway 26 are being caused by more than just
the draw of summer events. In Kathy's recent trip to Portland and back she
encountered construction delay at the tunnel and other places. Rich said he
would look into it. 

9. Sue: Results of the survey designed by DVA and distributed by the Chamber
last month are available at the Chamber.

1.     Show & Tell by Susan Lanker, D.C.  / Pacific Way Wellness Center.

www.DrLanker.com 503-738-9796. Alignment is key to keeping the body in good
working condition. The brain spends 70% of the time on organs and 30% on
pain. Pain is not always the best indicator of problems. Correct posture can
make a big difference. Think of the body as three balls - the hips, the
torso and the head. The balls need to be balanced nicely on top of each
other. Roll the hips forward. Roll the torso back . Roll the head up
slightly. If standing for a long period, find something to put one foot up
on. When asked, Tim suggested for posture, to think of the body hanging from
a hook connected at the sternum without doing anything special with the
shoulders. When working at a desk or computer, stop every 40 minutes and
stretch the opposing muscle groups - lean back and stretch the torso, arms
and hands back. To relieve carpel tunnel pain, press the elbow against the
wall, palm down, and push against the fingers. 

2.     George: About 10 years ago carpel tunnel pain developed in George's
right arm. It started off with pain when using the mouse, but progressed
into constant pain that encompassed the entire arm and more. SAIF offered a
workshop on Repetitive Motion Syndrome which taught George how to overcome
his carpel tunnel pain. Even before the workshop, he had switched to using
the mouse with his left hand. The workshop instructed him to 1. Keep his
feet flat on the floor with the upper leg parallel to the ground. 2. Have
the keyboard and mouse at a height and position so as to allow the arms to
be parallel to the ground. 3. Keep his wrists from resting on anything,
especially something hard or sharp. Pressure aggravates the situation. 4.
Position the center of the monitor at eye level. Using these techniques,
George's pain went away and has not come back. 

3.     George: Monday's Tourism and Arts Work Session, led by Rich Mays and
Stephanie McGuire, was attended by 21 people representing 7 groups. Rich and
Stephanie emphasized their willingness to answer questions and assist in the
completion of the application forms. The projected $210K (less a 10%
reserve) will be distributed in increments by quarter with approx 40% coming
from the quarter ending Sept 30 (to be distributed mid November). Funding
will be by project, not by group. The application deadline, originally set
for Sept 1, was extended to Sept 10 by Rich in response to requests from
those attending who pointed out the burden of doing this during peak season.
Rich stressed the importance of getting applications in as early as possible
so that he and/or Stephanie could review them and point out shortcomings. 

4.     Kristine: With the goal of Tourism and Arts Fund applicants working
together collaboratively, a meeting of all the groups should be held. It
would be a chance for groups to see where they could help each other.   

5.     Wendy: November 12-14, 2010 will be this year's Women Only Weekend.  

6.  Susan: Bruce's Candy Kitchen will be donating proceeds from sale of
taffy next Wednesday (August 18 ) to VOCA (Victory Over Child Abuse).  

7.  Michael: Sue Meyers and Jeff Jewel will be guests on Michael KMUN radio
program Friday at 930 am. The program will focus on "The Selling of Cannon
Beach"  

8.  Ken: Coast River Business Journal is putting together a stand-alone,
5"x12" guide to Meeting and Event Space in the area. Free listings are
available. Deadline is Aug 13.  To be included -  503-325-2999

9.  Debbie: Stephanie and Ryan Snyder's home burned over the weekend. The
family escaped without harm but lost much of their belongings to fire and
smoke. They and house guests were awakened at 2am by heat and smoke alarms.
The fire is suspected to have been started by a golf cart charging in the
garage. 

10.  Jeff: Michael Orwick is producing the art for the SWAF poster. SWAF is
set for Nov 5-7.

11.  Jeff: Jeff has been hosting travel writers from around the world. Next
week two are coming from Virgin Atlantic (parent of Virgin Records, etc)

12.  Jeff: Jeff was interviewed twice for the LA Times article which
included Cannon Beach and featured photography by George Vetter.

13.  Wendy: The Public Works Department has called attention to problems
created by people feeding wild animals. These animals become dependent on
these handouts and are not able to survive without it. In lieu of an
ordinance (and fine) to stop this, the City is opting to educate people
about the problems created by this practice.

6.     Jennifer Williamson: Yesterday's Farmer's Market saw 2207 visitors.
The summer fruit is peaking. The peaches and cherries got rave reviews.

7.  Tim Krupa: Rod Eichenberger, who has taught choral conducting throughout
the world as a member of three universities and as a guest artist at
workshops and seminars, is headlining a workshop of 135 people coordinated
by George Fox University this week at the Elementary School Auditorium. The
week culminates with a concert Friday Night.

8.  George Vetter: In communication with the PSU Music Department earlier
this year, George was told that a new director was taking over and there was
not time to coordinate/organize a Summer Music program in Cannon Beach this
year but that it was being looked at for 2011. Margo Dueber and others
brought up the challenges PSU had in the past with finding housing for their
students..  

9.  Tim Krupa: A new committee at the Chamber headed by Tracy Abel -
"Membership Relations" has been formed to work on improving chamber member
relations. Being considered is a monthly breakfast meeting where a hardy
breakfast is made available and members (and friends) have a WMM style
sit-down. Tracy suggested that this replace the WMM once per month. George
supported the idea of Chamber breakfast gathering, but in addition to the
regular WMM rather than in place of it. He pointed out that the idea of
moving the meeting around had been discussed previously and that the group
consensus was to keep it consistently in one location to avoid confusion. He
felt that the Chamber could use the WMM as it is to accomplish the goal of
improving Member Relations. Dianna Pappas expressed concern that having it
become a Chamber Meeting once a month could undermine the momentum and
energy that the WMM has going. Kathy Kleczek felt it important to keep the
WMM and the Chamber separate. Others agreed and encouraged the Chamber to
have this monthly breakfast on a morning other than Wednesday. Tim took a
poll of preferred days.    

10.  George: City Manager Rich Mays and City Employee Stephanie McGuire will
be conducting a workshop at City Hall on Monday at 2pm to assist Tourism and
Arts Commission Fund applicants with their applications.

2.     Tim Krupa: As Chamber president, Tim is charged with (upon Board
approval) committee appointments. He has been working on this. The Marketing
Committee will be headed by Kristine Gottsch with Scott Kruickshank and Jim
McDonald as members. Tim will continue with the Website for the time being.
Kelli Truax Taylor will head the Events Committee (Oversight committee for
all events) with Brian Olson on that committee so far. As Treasurer, Scott
will head the Finance Committee. Membership so far is Tracy Abel and Sue
Meyers.    

3,   Tim Krupa: 72 surveys were returned to the Chamber. The first item on
the survey was to list the top three strengths. 90% chose Natural
Environment and the Beach. 60% chose the Arts.  For weaknesses, 41% chose
parking and 30-some% chose weather. 52% felt that the best new event would
be a music festival. DVA Advertising and Public Relations is using all the
survey input to formulate a marketing plan. A tag line being considered is
"Come for the Ocean, Stay for the Rest"

4.    Tim Krupa: Tim's list of top Chamber priorities are 1. Finances. 2.
Website. 3. Marketing. 4. Member Relations 5. Events.

5.     George Vetter: George read the e-mail/news release sent out by CBBA
announcing that they will continue their work till Sept 30th and will then
dissolve their 501(c)6 organization. George also read his reply thanking
CBBA for their work, which benefited all of Cannon Beach, In his reply,
George went on to say "I look forward to working with you at the Chamber and
hope you feel comfortable putting your positive energy, ideas and resources
behind the Chamber effort".   

6.   Shari: At yesterday's meeting of the Tourism and Arts Commission (TAC),
application guidelines were approved and are to be made public Aug 1. An
August 9th, 2pm workshop will be held to aid applicants. Applications will
be due September 1. A September 13th meeting (130pm) was set to review
applications. Application approval is planned for October with the first $
becoming available in November. City Attorney, Tammy Herdener, addressed the
commission about conflict of interest stating that if a decision will have a
monetary effect (either positive or negative) on an individual (extended to
their family and partners), then that person has a conflict of interest and
should step down from discussion and voting on that matter. Even if there
will be no monetary impact, a person should step down if they feel their
decision would be influenced by their relationships or position. A volunteer
board member who is not paid does not necessarily have a conflict of
interest, although Tammy did recommend that the Chair of a Board should step
down. At the TAC meeting George brought up the unique nature of this
particular commission in that they would be working with a fixed amount of
money and that any vote to fund one applicant would take funds away from
another applicant. The only conflict of interest identified at the TOC
meeting was that of John Grosshuesch who chairs the Coaster Theatre board.

7.  Stephen Malkowski: A new local group is forming. The Cannon Beach
Culinary Arts Association is coordinating with the Chamber in the "branding"
of Cannon Beach. We have the visual arts, the performing arts and also the

8.  Wendy: Zipcar is the world's largest car sharing and car club service.
It is an alternative to traditional car rental and car ownership. Share
Zipcars in Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, London, New York,
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto,
Vancouver and Washington DC. Cannon Beach has a designated/reserved Zipcar
parking space on Spruce St. next to the Chamber. George says he drives or
walks past that space nearly daily and just last week, for the first time he
saw a car parked there - a Zipcar. Always looking for the unusual, he
photographed it. It was just an ordinary car, but it was there, in that
parking space that has sat vacant for months. With George's recent report of
how he has witnessed a parking space on Hemlock turn over 8 times in a day,
he questioned the benefit in tying up such a valuable space for so seldom a
use.  

9.  Stephen: After recently witnessing a large RV pulling a car through
downtown, Stephen compared it to a Cruise ship pulling into a harbor with
small boats. He suggested we look for ways to route RV's away from Downtown.
George said he was recently approached by a downtown merchant who suggested
that parking for RV's be developed off the Midtown exit and that the shuttle
be used.  

10.  Kathy: People are not using the Shuttle in the way they could or should
because the schedule is not posted or distributed properly. As a community,
we need to do a better job of promoting our Shuttle. And we need to do a
better job of promoting the bus service to and from Portland and the airport

11.  Kathy: ODOT has begun it's PR about the 2011 tunnel closure. They were
at our Farmer's Market yesterday with a booth answering question and handing
out info. Kathy is concerned that their efforts may be focused too much on
people on this side of the tunnel.

12.  Cleve Rooper, Fire Chief. Cannon Beach Fire and Rescue is a volunteer
organization (other than the Chief and the Marshall). Volunteers are
dwindling - down 30%. Please spread the word of the need. Volunteers must be
18 years of age and capable of passing a physical test to accomplishing
tasks typical of fire fighters. There is no upper age limit. Volunteers must
be able to leave whatever they are doing when called upon and must be
available for Wednesday evening meetings and training. There are 300-400
calls per year. Beside the satisfaction of helping those in time of need,

2.     Jeff: After being contracted by the Chamber, DVA Advertising and
Public Relations representatives Shanrae Hawkins and Justin Yax were at the
Chamber last week for a Meet and Greet with the community. More than 40
people gathered to see their short presentation and to meet them. After
studying a survey of members of the Chamber and the Community, they are
working on a logo and tag line for Cannon Beach. www.dvaadv.com.

3,   Tim passed out a Chamber Profit and Loss Budget vs Actual for July 2009
thru June 2010. As the Chamber Treasurer for the past year, Tim reported
that the Chamber ended the fiscal year $42K in the black, compared to nearly
$50K in the red a little over a year ago. Sponsorship and membership numbers
are both up substantially as was event income.   

4.    Jeff: New Board members Kristine Gottsch and Sue Meyers took their
seats at yesterday's Chamber Board meeting. Margo Dueber's resignation was
accepted and Carol Hungerford was appointed to fill the position. Officers
for the coming year are President Tim Krupa, VP George Vetter, Secretary
Carol Hungerford, Treasurer Scott Kruickshank. Committees are being
populated. Volunteers are needed. chamber at cbor.us reaches all Board Members
plus Jeff.  

5.   Carol: In spite of yesterday's cool weather, 1800 people visited the
Farmers Market's 18 vendors. Next weeks restaurant slot is open. Contact
cbfm.manager at gmail.com if interested. Volunteers are needed. Farmers Market
volunteers who volunteer to serve at EVOO's Wednesday Farmers Market dinner
get the meal free.   

6.   Rich: Providence Hospital in Seaside is coming to talk with Rich next
week about how they can better serve the community. Rich is seeking input

7.  Rich: The newly appointed Tourism and Arts Commission met Monday for the
first time. John G was elected chair and Tom Drumheller vice-chair. Robin
Risley, Valerie Ryan and Linda Beck-Sweeney complete the 5. Applications
will be made available by the beginning of August and will be due in by
September 1st. The next meeting is Tues July 27 at 130pm at City Hall. See

8.  Tim: Cannon Beach Chorus has a Tribute planned for Monday July 26 at 7pm
at the Coaster Theatre to honor outgoing director Dorene Dunlap. All are
welcome.

10.  Wendy recommends the book "Ordinary Greatness" by Pamela Bilbrey and
Brian Jones. Kristine said it is a very good read. She read it in one
sitting.

11.  HRAP (Haystack Rock Awareness Program) will have a potluck followed by
a program and video debut Thursday July 22nd 6pm at the Chamber's Community
Hall.

12.  Gary: The updated maps, financed by an add-on to the City business
license fee, are at the printer and will be out in a couple weeks.

13.  George: Someone e-mailed this morning asking if there is a book about
the Cannon Beach Sandcastle Contest. No one was aware of such a book. George
mentioned the Library of Congress Local Legacies page at
http://lcweb2.loc.gov/diglib/legacies/OR/200002927.html. Former Senator
Gordon Smith had submitted that info after consultation with Billie
Atherton. George says when he came to town in 1977 he was told by Margaret
Atherton and Miriam Crowell that they started the event. It was agreed that
Bill Steidel and Treva Haskell would likely know the history.

14.  Kristine: Question: Is it too idealistic to think that all the groups
who will be applying for Tourism and Arts Commissio (TAC) funds could get
together to discuss what their goals are and how they can work together?
Robin, who is on the TAC, says collaboration is encouraged in the
guidelines.

16.  Lesle: Deadline for submission of grant requests to Travel Oregon is
August 20. www.traveloregon.com
