3. George: On Sunday George photographed dark foam and dark water that had
the appearance of oil. Turns out to be diatoms. Diatoms are single-celled
plants (phytoplankton) that are found in both fresh and salt water. They
are one of the most important food sources in the ocean. In the winter,
spring, and early summer, diatoms rapidly multiply in the surf zone.
Diatoms absorb large amounts of nitrates and phosphates that are delivered
into the ocean by coastal rivers, contributing to their population
explosion. Everything in the ocean feeds on diatoms and other plankton,
either directly of indirectly. Even the great baleen whales, like the Gray
Whale, filter plankton and diatoms as part of their diet. When the surf
zone becomes to saturated with diatoms, they wash ashore. When they do wash
ashore, it is in such great quantities that they resemble an oil spill. See
photos and get more info at
http://www.beachconnection.net/news/brown040810_437.php. You may have seen
the Gazette's article about this back in April also.

thanked all those who helped in both little and big ways. Friday's Quick
Draw was a full house.(photos at www.cannon-beach.net) Auctioned art sold at
a higher average price than last year, but overall $ were down due to two
items that received no bids because of $1000 minimum bids set by the
artists. Saturday's music event at the Coaster was about 60% full. It turned
out to be quite interactive and went till late by popular demand. Open mic
at Sea Ranch Resort's new activities building had 40 or so people attending
and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Diana said JP's was packed for lunch and
dinner on Saturday. Kim said Bronze Coast Gallery served more wine than
ever. The crowd was big, but overall $ were down even though the number of
sales was up. Stephanie said Primary Elements Gallery and George said his
Photo Gallery had similar experiences. Prudence said the Cannon Beach Arts
Association Gallery had its miniature show which was the perfect show for
the crowd - low prices. Jeff said TerHars did not have all that good a
weekend, but about even with last year. Tracy said Lush had good crowds and
that she didn't feel that all the free wine at the galleries had a negative
impact on her business. George felt that the number of people in town was
down from past SWAF weekends. Wendy said lodging was not full. Rooms were
available all weekend.

at the Chamber. Proceeds will go to cancer research. Stay tuned.

Wendy reported on TAC and listed who received what amounts. This
information can be found on the Chamber website.

Patrick noted that the funds were not an entitlement for an organization,
but that they had to meet very specific criteria.

It was noted what a challenge to evaluate, and George commented also the
challenge of evaluating the effectiveness of the use of the funds.

Robin suggested some might combine Art with a group for lodging to apply.

The City if considering work on the bridge by the school and City Hall to

3. Michael Manzulli: Oregon is considering outlawing plastic bags. China
already has. The City of Portland has said that even if Oregon doesn't, they
will. Fred Meyer has already stopped using plastic bags in Portland. Why?
One million seabirds die each year because of them. Add to that 100,000
marine mammals. Petroleum based plastics are not biodegradable. They are
here forever. They do break down into smaller and smaller pieces, but they
offer nothing to support life except to hold groceries or other items from
the store to home. Look for alternatives like paper or cloth which are
biodegradable. Biodegradable plastics are available. Look for them. Plastic
alternatives available at www.foodbizsupply.com, www.trellisearth.com,

1. Carol/Diana/Jeff: SWAF is just two weeks away. Friday night's Quick Draw
event will be at the Surfsand Ballroom. Only 50 of the 175 tickets still
remain. Following Saturday night's concert at the Coaster Theatre will be
"Open Mic" at the new Sea Ranch pavilion. See
http://www.cannonbeach.org/chamber/events/stormy/stormy-weather.html for
more info. Jeff says that Diana has worked hard on lining up music for the
weekend. As a result, there will be more than ever.

2. Stephanie says her Primary Arts Gallery will feature 12 artists for
SWAF. George says that besides his photography, George Vetter FotoArt will
feature the framers of Cannon Beach - Haystack Gallery, Steidel's Art and
Heritage Gallery. Each will showcase an image demonstrating their matting
and framing skills. See SWAF page on Cannon Beach Gallery Group site at
http://www.cbgallerygroup.com/mainstormy.html.

3. Michael Burkett says Valerie is finally bouncing back. She has been
participating in TAC meeting by phone.

4. After receiving applications from 10 organizations with requests for 3
times more money than what is available, the Tourism and Arts Commission
asked each group to prioritize their asks within their application. Each
group was scheduled for an interview which took place yesterday and today.

5. Diana of JP's reported that the newly formed Culinary Arts group has 9
members and is soliciting participation of all Cannon Beach food venues.
Cynthia Malkowski is the president of the group and Diana is VP. The group
is working with the Chamber to become part of the Chamber.

6. WOW (Womens Only Weekend) is set for Nov 12-14. If you have not already
done so and want to participate, contact Wendy at theoceanlodge.com. For event
info see www.womensonlyweekend.net/Events.html. Carol Hungerford says she
will at at EVOO with her omelette recipes on that Saturday morning at 10am.

7. Wendy attended a seminar of the Oregon Tourism Assn (OTA) recently. The
focus was on Spanish speaking travelers and their growing numbers.

8. Jeff: The Chamber's off-season promotion is underway with ads running in
the Seattle Post Intelligencer (online), Journey Magazine (Washington's AAA
- Nov/Dec issue - 1/6 page color ad. Circulation of 583,000 in Washington
and Northern Idaho) and Seattle Met magazine (October and November issues -
Two 1/3 page ads (black & white with color logo) This upscale lifestyle
magazine has a paid circulation of approximately 58,930 in the Seattle
market, with an estimated readership of 179,737. Delivered to subscribers
10/25/10). As of October 5, the Seattle PI ad had 414,682 impressions
(different times that it has appeared for someone) and 74,000 click
throughs.

9. Wendy: A group of 25 Delta Employees will be in town at the Ocean Lodge
on the night of Dec 10 by arrangement of the Port of Portland. As time gets
closer, Wendy will know what their schedule will be.

10. Margo: Too often when she greets people as they come into her store she
hears "You're the first person that has made us feel welcome". Money spent
promoting Cannon Beach may get them here, but good customer service is what
will bring them back. Poor customer service, on the other hand, will work
against whatever positive message we put out in our advertising campaigns.
Patrick spoke (again) of Travel Oregon's Quality Service Initiative
(online). He offered Escape Lodging's financial support to get a program
going in Cannon Beach. Michael mentioned a community he knows that sent out
secret shoppers to evaluate customer service.

11. Bob of Mo's reported great business for October. Patrick says their
lodging is at 91% occupancy which is very good for October. Retail seems
improved from Sept, but galleries, for the most part, are still being left
out by consumers.

7. Next Wednesday Morning Meeting - October 27, 2010, Mo's, 8am. Mo's is
closed for breakfast for the season. Bring your own coffee cup. The coffee

October 6, 2010 - WMM at 8am at Mo's

Notes by Carol Hungerford

Wendy: This is Domestic Violence Awareness month. People wearing purple
ribbons

are observing. Erin, Silent Witness, $5 donation for lightbulb at Chamber
and City

Hall, ribbons show support. Lst year 53 women got support as a result of
domestic

violence, 2 women were killed.

Seaport 7am and 7pm flights to pdx, open house Oct 13, 2-5pm at Warrenton

airport, wine/beer tasting. Leslie points out that we need to get more
useage or we

won't have service. Leslie and Stephanie said that we need to promote it for
guest

coming to our community, plus it is a great deal for locals flying anywhere
else is

cheeper to park free at Warrenton and fly to pdx to fly on.

Jeff: Business After Hours 4:30-6:30 at Land's End on Wed, Oct 13

SWAF, SPotlign (evening of songwriters) Bruce Smith, Jon from Portland, open

with My Fair Lady songs (upcoming Coast production) a nd music by Seaside

HighJazz Band. Open Mic at 8:30 at Sea Ranch, all musicians have been
invited to

attend that night. Munchies provided, small cover.

Michael promoted the SWAF tab that his publication is producing. He also
passed

around a journal for Val who is back in the hospital after a short time
home. No

word on when shell be released. Likely will go to a transitional stay.

Carol also promoted her tab.

Patrick introduced his wife Lisa, and shared that he has three daughters in
three

different Seaside District schools. He is supporting the new school levy
that will

be $.52 per 1,000 of assisted value. This replaces the existing levy which
expires.

4-152 is the measure number. This is an operational levy, but the district
has not

increased the amount of the levy. Lisa said that if I doesn't pass, class
sizes will be

dramatically increased as well as programs cuts including art, music and pe,
and

Cannon Beach Elementary will be closed fairly quickly. Many contributed that
a

good school system is the foundation of our community, offers a reason for
people

to locate (or relocated) to our community. Diana shared this quote, we teach
our

children to read and write so they know where they come from, we teach them
math

so they know how to survive, and we teach them the arts so they have a
reason to

live. Wendy said that healthy communities have healthy schools.

Homeless students are an increasing problem in our school district. For to
many of

these kids school is the only base they have, a place for stability, warmth,
dry and a

place to wash and eat.

Chad from SurfSand said that we can help in simple ways. Just attending a
football

game feeds money into the sports program. Also, we can find Pacifica
projects for

the seniors.

SurfSand dog show is looking for celebrity judges, and anybody in our group
is

invited to be a judge or help with the event. To be held on Oct 16 rain or
shine.

Shine will be on the beach, and Rain will be at Haystack Gardens.

Robin asked us to be careful with leaving pets outside as there are coyotes
trolling

for food in the evening. Recently five cats have gone missing as a result of
wildlife

dining.

Janea passed around the purple ribbons for the Domestic Violence Awareness,
and

fliers.

Tracy reminded us of tonight being first Wednesday of the month, so it is
Boggus

Front Room night at Lush Wine Bar. This is different from their open mic
event on

Wednesday nights. She was also very appreciative of all the support and
referrals

Lush has gotten from the business community.

Pat shared the quarterly real estate report. There have actually been some
sales in

Cannon Beach, showing an improving trend in real estate. Sadly the market
has a

larger inventory, so it could be possible to wait in excess of four years to
have your

house sell. Also, there are now some homes being foreclosed.

Janae also talked about a fundraiser for the Clatsop County Food Pantry at
the

SurfSand. A fine dining event, by invitation, for $150/plate. The goal is to
raise

money for mortage payment on the Food Pantry building.

Iron Chef fundraiser for United Way. See last week notes regarding
participating

chefs. November 2 at Seaside Convention Center.

Jeff attending (last night) the regional OVCA meeting. Cannon Beach hasn't
been

represented for ages, so Jeff's presence was hugely welcomed. Culinary
Tourism,

Slow Food, and InFarmation will be added to regional promotion ideas, along
with

the very popular ecotourism effort
