1. New at today's meeting. Patti Atkins, APR, Director Public Relations and
Marketing, Providence Health Services. Patti introduced Robert W Morse D.O.,
F.A.C.C. Cardiologist. Dr Morse has moved to the Oregon Coast from Nevada.
He is living in Astoria with his wife and children. He is joining the
Providence Heart Clinic and will be able to take care of some patients who
previously had to be sent/flighted to Portland. He is certified in internal
medicine, cardiovascular medicine and nuclear cardiology. Reach Patti at
patti.atkins at providence.org 503-717-7644. For an appointment with Dr Morse
call 503-717-7850.

2. Rich: State of the City. The City will be having its annual retreat on
February 12. One focus of the city is to promote Cannon Beach housing to
families with children, not just retirees. To this end the City has been
supporting the Cannon Beach Children's Center. Currently $63,000 of city
money goes to the children's center. The city has been working with the
school board on the Cannon Beach Elementary School. Eventually the
elementary school will be moved out of the tsunami zone. That property will
likely at that point be converted to a park or related use. A focus of the
city has been to enhance the setting which involves promoting the arts.
Improving the infrastructure, emergency preparedness and a Farmer's Market
have also been addressed by the city while being environmentally conscious.
A new City Hall with a roof to hold up to 1000 people in case of a tsunami
in under consideration. The cost would be about $8M. Some funding could come
from the government. The remainder would come from a tax referendum. To be
safe from a tsunami it is estimated that being 50' above sea level will be
necessary. A grant is being sought to build a footbridge/Emergency vehicle
bridge across Ecola Creek next to the existing bridge which is not expected
to survive an earthquake/tsunami. The City lodging tax was increased in
2010 by 1% from 6% to 7%. The Tourism and Arts Commission was formed and has
awarded 70% of the 1% increase (approx $200k) to 7 local organizations with
the goal of putting heads in beds while at the same time bolstering the
arts. The Cannon Beach Trail was opened with plans for expansion in 2011.
The City is working on an easement agreement with the Conference Center for
Trail expansion. Acquisition of 800 acres adjacent to the City's water shed
was finalized just recently. Voters had passed a Bond authorizing this
purchase. The cost was $3.6M. Two thirds of the city's revenue comes from
the Lodging Tax. The first Qtr Lodging Tax came in as expected. Revenue from
the second Qtr (ended 12/31/2010) will not be known till February.
Development of the hills east of Hwy 101 above Cannon Beach would require
expansion of Cannon Beach's Urban Growth Boundary. This is something that
would come through the Planning Commission.

3. ODOT will be holding an Open House at the Chamber from 430p-630p today.
Learn about the latest tunnel project schedule and meet the contractor and
project manager. Details at http://www.dennisedwardstunnel.org

4. Tomorrow (Thursday) is Business After Hours at JP's at 430p - Food,

Spring issue of Coast Explorer Magazine due out in February. This info will
also be used in PR materials. Specific details of events can be submitted
later for use in a final press kit and a complete schedule on
CoastExplorerMagazine.com. Right now, we need just basic information. We
encourage all lodging businesses to purchase tickets for the Children's
Center Wine Tour and create lodging packages. All lodging packages submitted

2. Kristine: Justin, the chamber's contact with DVA, will be in town Friday
to meet with the Chamber of Commerce and other community members who would
like to meet with him at the Wayfarer Restaurant from 4 to 5:30 PM. Justin
is putting together a tailored media list and a pitch list. He is looking
for input and feedback. The chamber will be doing monthly solicitations of
information regarding anniversaries, new business openings, events, etc.

3. Prudence: Thanks to the Chamber of Commerce for their PR help with the
Taylor Branch event. There will be speakers on Friday and Saturday. Friday
will kick off with a chili and chowder feed. Registration for 150 people is
still open. The advertised deadline for registration is January 15 but
registrations will still be taken until filled. Materials are still needed
from local businesses and organizations for display and dissemination at the
events. Stephanie volunteered to help at the Coaster Theater venue.

4. Abbie: Today from 4-530PM the Wayfarer Restaurant will have its grand
reopening after its recent renovation. All are invited.

5. JohnB: Cannon Beach Chorus begins its weekly Monday evening rehearsals
at 6:30 PM at the Presbyterian Church. The goal of the Chorus is fun. The
goal is reached every Monday. If you can't make it this Monday then please
come the next or the following.

6. PatF: Buyers are coming back! 2010 real estate activity in Cannon beach
was up nicely over 2009. A total of 50 properties were sold in 2010 versus
24 in 2009. Sales of properties over $1 million went from one in 2009 to
five in 2010. More info at www.cannonbeachrealestate.com

7. Keith C: The next World of Haystack Rock Library Lecture Series will be
held tomorrow Thursday Jan 6th at 7pm at the Cannon Beach Library. North
Coast Land Conservancy Director Katie Volke will be speaking about "The
Landscape of the Whale, a Plan for the Greater Ecola Natural Area". It
promises to be another excellent (free) presentation, co-sponsored by the
Cannon Beach Library and the Friends of Haystack Rock.

8. TracyA: The band Radio Cowboy will be playing at Lush Wine Bar Saturday,
January 29 at 8 PM. Come one. Come all. Have fun. "Baga's Front Room" is
First Wednesdays - live music by our own Paul Dueber, Peter Dueber, Bill
Steidel and friends. Today is the first Wednesday of the month.

9. TracyA: At last night's city Council meeting a resolution was passed to
support the Oregon State proposed law banning single-use plastic bags.
George: Michael Manzulli, who first brought this issue to the Wednesday
morning meeting, reported back by e-mail that reusing singel-use plastic
bags by businesses would not be allowed under the new law.

10. StephanieA: I recently slipped on an icy surface and fell and hit my
head. Luckily I was in good enough condition to get myself to the clinic
near my work. Several things occurred to me as result of this incident.
Number one: what if I had been knocked out. Would anyone have known who to
contact? Number two: what liability do we as shop owners and business owners
face in such instances? We all need to be prepared for such emergencies.

11. JeanieMc: During my recent travels by Amtrak I learned that the Portland
Amtrak station would be willing to carry our Cannon Beach Magazine and
possibly other brochures from our area.

12. NalaC: Courtesy of the Seaside Aquarium Nala passed out 2011 official
tide table books. These are the tides as measured by NOAA at the North Jetty
of the Columbia River. These are the tides that correspond most closely with
Cannon Beach. These tides are also published in the Cannon Beach Magazine,
the Chamber website and on www.Cannon <http://www.Cannon-Beach.net>
-Beach.net.

13. LesleP: a Highway 101 bypass around Seaside is once again being
considered. Those interested can attend a meeting at the Seaside City Hall
on January 18 at 7 PM

14. Carol: ODOT will be holding an Open House to learn about the latest
tunnel project schedule and to meet the contractor and project manager in

3. Wendy: Occupancy at Ocean Lodge has not been great this week, but this
weekend should be close to full. Brian: House rentals are down from what
they had expected.

4. George: Retail continues to struggle, both because of lack of people and
lack of money. For small retailers to survive they must offer what the
giants and chains do not - customer service, personal attention, unique
products and collections, a memorable experience, etc

5. JimK: Icefire Glassworks does not discount. This would devalue the
work. Instead they educate people on the quality of their work. Stephanie
also says she adds value by educating people about pieces in her gallery.
Others talked about how everyone seems to be looking for bargains/deals.
Those not offering bargains/deals are being passed over. George: News
reports are that retail is up nationally by 3-4% this Holiday season. With
the kind of discounting that has been taking place everywhere, retailers may
be doing the sales but at the expense of their profit.

6. KristineG: Many owners may understand the importance of customer
service, but how do you get the message to the front line? One suggestion
was to have a program of rewarding employees/businesses that score well with
a secret shopper. Another idea was to use comment cards. Maybe the
Information Center could solicit comments and share those with businesses.

7. Wendy: Two books recommended are Primal Leadership and Ordinary
Greatness.

8. George: ODOT just sent out a notice that they will be holding and Open
House to learn about the latest tunnel project schedule and to meet the
contractor and project manager in Cannon Beach at the Chamber on Wednesday
January 12th from 430p-630p. Details at http://www.dennisedwardstunnel.org

9. George: Rich Mays, City Manager will address the WMM on January 12 with
"The State of the City". Rich was asked to do so.

10. Michael Manzulli: The Northwest Grocers Assn is encouraging
municipalities to support the State's drive to ban single use plastic bags.
Our City Council will be considering this at their Tuesday Jan 4th meeting.
Other coastal towns like Newport and Lincoln City are ahead of Cannon Beach
in this regard. This topic led to discussion of recycling in Cannon Beach -
not for residents, but for visitors. Many visitors recycle at home and when
here are not offered bins on our streets or in our shopping areas.

11. George: A teacher/mother visiting Cannon Beach suggested we look into
having a December High School Choir Caroling competition. Not only would
this bring students, parents and relatives to town, but also spectators who
would boost the local economy.

12. Prudence: Please bring rack materials of your business to upcoming WMMs
for display at the opening night of The Cannon Beach Arts Assn's Jan 28-30
event - "Cannon Beach Arts Symposium with Taylor Branch". CBAA already has
partners on this event and would like anyone who wishes to become a partner

1. George: With the departure of Executive Director Jeff Jewel, the Chamber
is taking this opportunity to look at the Chamber model and also at the Exec
Dir job description. Tim: The Management committee will take over during
this interim period. Filling the hole left by Jeff will take more
volunteers. If you can help in any way contact chamber at cbor.us. Without Jeff
to make calls and visits for membership and sponsorship, it's important for
businesses to step up on their own by joining the Chamber and participating
as sponsors. Brian: January is not a good time to be seeking sponsorships.
Late summer, when people have money would be better. Tim: This can be looked
at. Because CB Magazine comes out in February and a big benefit for sponsors
is inclusion in the magazine, sponsorships have been solicited just prior to
that in the past.

2. George: At yesterday;s Chamber Board meeting, guests spoke up about what
they think the Chamber should do at this juncture. One opinion was to turn
the Information Center over to the City and move the Chamber to a location
on Hemlock Street. Discussion followed with concerns expressed by various
people that Cannon Beach was too small to have a second organization
requiring a second staff, rent, phone, etc. Kristine voiced concern about
the Chamber losing the direct input from visitors so important to its goal
and efforts.

3. Rich Mays, City Manager, has been appointed to the Chamber Board. Rich
will fill the position vacated by Kelli Truax-Taylor. This term expires in
June. Rich served a three year term on the board which ended this past
June. One board position remains open after the recent resignation of Sue
Meyers. Current board members are President Tim Krupa, VP George Vetter,
Secretary Carol Hungerford, Treasurer Scott Cruickshank, Tracy Abel, Jim
McDonald, Kristine Gottsch and Rich Mays. Board elections will take place in
June. Terms to expire are Rich Mays, Tracy Abel and Carol Hungerford.
Anyone interested is encouraged to e-mail chamber at cbor.us.

4. TAC dollars awarded to the Chamber is to serve all CB businesses and
organizations that did not receive their own PR award.

5. The Chamber received TAC dollars for the website. Jim McDonald will
head the committee that will move forward with how that money will be used.
jim at tolovanainn.com

6. Stephanie: There does not seem to be enough promoting of
commerce/shopping for Cannon Beach. Neighboring towns to the North seem to
be faring much better than CB, Part of problem is businesses closing early
or just not being open. If downstairs stores are closed, people aren't going
to be going upstairs. Could there be a scrolling sign at the Info Ctr
showing who is open in town? Lesle: It is so important to greet everyone who
comes in a store. She recently experience various stores in town where that
did not happen.

7. Tracy: Tonight (Wed 22Dec) from 7-9pm is open mic Christmas Carols and
hot spiced wine at Lush Wine Bar. www.lushwinebar.com

8. Jeff: Stormy Weather Arts Festival apparel and mdse is 30% off at the
Chamber.

9. The next World of Haystack Rock Library Lecture Series will be held on
Thursday Jan 6th at 7pm at the Cannon Beach Library. North Coast Land
Conservancy Director Katie Volke will be speaking about "The Landscape of
the Whale, a Plan for the Greater Ecola Natural Area". It promises to be
another excellent (free) presentation, co-sponsored by the Cannon Beach
Library and the Friends of Haystack Rock.

10. Wendy: The Astoria fire was devastating to many businesses. Lesle: 28
businesses/offices per displaced. Equipment was lost. If you have desks,
printers, computers, phones, etc that you can donate, go to Website:

3. George: On Sunday George photographed dark foam and dark water that had
the appearance of oil. Turns out to be diatoms. Diatoms are single-celled
plants (phytoplankton) that are found in both fresh and salt water. They
are one of the most important food sources in the ocean. In the winter,
spring, and early summer, diatoms rapidly multiply in the surf zone.
Diatoms absorb large amounts of nitrates and phosphates that are delivered
into the ocean by coastal rivers, contributing to their population
explosion. Everything in the ocean feeds on diatoms and other plankton,
either directly of indirectly. Even the great baleen whales, like the Gray
Whale, filter plankton and diatoms as part of their diet. When the surf
zone becomes to saturated with diatoms, they wash ashore. When they do wash
ashore, it is in such great quantities that they resemble an oil spill. See
photos and get more info at
http://www.beachconnection.net/news/brown040810_437.php. You may have seen
the Gazette's article about this back in April also.
