1. New at today's meeting: Pamela Hamrick - Darline Warren Farmer's
Insurance phamrick47 at gmail.com 503-341-8452.

2. PrudenceF: Both the Friday and Saturday events were at about 2/3
attendance. Those who were there were "astounded". The speakers "blew them
away". Thanks to the Chamber, Cannon Beach Vacation Rentals, Escape Lodging,
Coaster Theatre, the lodging establishments who offered great packages and
to all those who helped. Special thanks to Carol Knutsen-Hawes, who
conceived and planned the event. George reported that the guest at Inn at
Village Centre reported that it was a great event. Tracy said her Lush Wine
Bar business benefitted and she talked to restaurants who were busy at times
when they would normally not have been.

3. An e-mail from Melanie regarding her Nursing Museum read: "Just wanted to
let you know the Planning Commission approved the text amendment to allow
museums in the C-1 Zone. The City Council will take it up on March 1st".

4. Chicago, 1924 . . . two teenagers, Leopold and Loeb . . . a brutal murder
. . . an investigation . . . the sensational trial with Clarence Darrow
defending . . . the death penalty at stake! Live on stage at Coaster Theatre

5. Bob Neroni: Robyn Cannon is putting together a smart phone app for Pike
Place Market. She is doing this with Sutro, a company who does this with
travel writers for higher end destinations. The estimated cost for such an
app is $40K. If all Cannon Beach businesses listed in the city produced map,
paid equally, the cost would be $115 each. It would take approx 4 months to
build the app. The app would allow users to download it onto their phones
or pads (small fee $5 or less) and have GPS convenience to everything the
app contained. For info that Robyn put together see
www.cannon-beach.net/photos_cb/cbTravelApp/Cannon_Beach_Travel_App.pdf.
JeffT and GaryH pointed out that there are apps out there now that include
Cannon Beach and that Google and current websites already include most of
the information that would need to be gathered and maintained on an app.
George agreed saying that even if the money challenge were overcome, it
would be a major challenge to keep the app current and that you could not
rely on participants to do that without having someone designated to verify
that info is current and to solicit current info from participants. Malia
thinks that smart phone apps will become the norm in the future just like
websites are now. She thinks getting started with something, even if it is
small, is a good idea.

6. Gary: Savor Cannon Beach Wine and Culinary Festival March 10-13.
(Thursday - Sunday) Only 29 of the 100 available $60 Festival tickets

Culinary and Cultural Attractions" is being produced in conjunction with the
Festival. 26 pages will be sold at $325 per page. 10K will be printed with

Wed and Thur June 22 and 23 at Sea Ranch's "Sundance Event Lodge". Aaron is
originally from Philly. His father was a classic concert violinist. Aaron
came to Oregon to study at Lewis and Clark, but not music. He has since
immersed himself in music. He is passionate about music education. He visits
schools regularly. He has been doing a summer children's workshop in
Portland for years. His workshop is designed for 8 to 14 yr olds with or
without music experience. The fee is $250 for two sessions/day for two days
followed by a concert. Participants will learn how to write, perform and
record their own original songs and make their own MP3. Each child creates a
song, choosing all aspects of that song. The musical creations of each
student are recorded. Aaron does an annual Holiday Concert and would love to
bring a performance to Cannon Beach. Aaron treated us to a performance on
his violin of an original composition - his first in 1996.

closed, the WRC took over since it tied in with their mission. Tough
economic times have made it very difficult. The WRC Board has directed that
the Pioneer House MUST CLOSE at the end of June THIS YEAR if they do not
come up with a partnership or other funding solution by May 31. The Shelter
is 4 floors. The top floor is for families. There are 5 rooms. The third
floor has a freezer and laundry facilities and is where residents gather.
The second floor is for single women. As space permits, those who are
willing to work to stabilize their lives are housed free for 30 days. After
that, they can stay up to 5 months for $100/mo/person and $300/mo for
families. The Shelter has an 80% success rate. Approx 70% are victims of
domestic violence. The Shelter costs $11K per month to operate. Two Cannon
Beach families used the Shelter last year. The WRC gets some financial
assistance from the County and Clatsop Co cities except Warrenton. Lite Bite
is an upcoming event (Tues Jan 25 at Baked Alaska in Astoria) that will have
a silent auction to benefit the Shelter. Contact John Sowa of Sweet Basil's
to contribute - 503-436-1539 angowl8 at live.com. For more info or to
contribute to the Shelter or WRC contact Pat - 503-325-4962
patwrc at qwestoffice.net. If you know or encounter anyone in need of
assistance for the WRC or the Shelter, there is a 24 Hour Crisis Line -
503-325-5735.

1. New at today's meeting. Patti Atkins, APR, Director Public Relations and
Marketing, Providence Health Services. Patti introduced Robert W Morse D.O.,
F.A.C.C. Cardiologist. Dr Morse has moved to the Oregon Coast from Nevada.
He is living in Astoria with his wife and children. He is joining the
Providence Heart Clinic and will be able to take care of some patients who
previously had to be sent/flighted to Portland. He is certified in internal
medicine, cardiovascular medicine and nuclear cardiology. Reach Patti at
patti.atkins at providence.org 503-717-7644. For an appointment with Dr Morse
call 503-717-7850.

2. Rich: State of the City. The City will be having its annual retreat on
February 12. One focus of the city is to promote Cannon Beach housing to
families with children, not just retirees. To this end the City has been
supporting the Cannon Beach Children's Center. Currently $63,000 of city
money goes to the children's center. The city has been working with the
school board on the Cannon Beach Elementary School. Eventually the
elementary school will be moved out of the tsunami zone. That property will
likely at that point be converted to a park or related use. A focus of the
city has been to enhance the setting which involves promoting the arts.
Improving the infrastructure, emergency preparedness and a Farmer's Market
have also been addressed by the city while being environmentally conscious.
A new City Hall with a roof to hold up to 1000 people in case of a tsunami
in under consideration. The cost would be about $8M. Some funding could come
from the government. The remainder would come from a tax referendum. To be
safe from a tsunami it is estimated that being 50' above sea level will be
necessary. A grant is being sought to build a footbridge/Emergency vehicle
bridge across Ecola Creek next to the existing bridge which is not expected
to survive an earthquake/tsunami. The City lodging tax was increased in
2010 by 1% from 6% to 7%. The Tourism and Arts Commission was formed and has
awarded 70% of the 1% increase (approx $200k) to 7 local organizations with
the goal of putting heads in beds while at the same time bolstering the
arts. The Cannon Beach Trail was opened with plans for expansion in 2011.
The City is working on an easement agreement with the Conference Center for
Trail expansion. Acquisition of 800 acres adjacent to the City's water shed
was finalized just recently. Voters had passed a Bond authorizing this
purchase. The cost was $3.6M. Two thirds of the city's revenue comes from
the Lodging Tax. The first Qtr Lodging Tax came in as expected. Revenue from
the second Qtr (ended 12/31/2010) will not be known till February.
Development of the hills east of Hwy 101 above Cannon Beach would require
expansion of Cannon Beach's Urban Growth Boundary. This is something that
would come through the Planning Commission.

3. ODOT will be holding an Open House at the Chamber from 430p-630p today.
Learn about the latest tunnel project schedule and meet the contractor and

for input and feedback. The chamber will be doing monthly solicitations of
information regarding anniversaries, new business openings, events, etc.

3. Prudence: Thanks to the Chamber of Commerce for their PR help with the
Taylor Branch event. There will be speakers on Friday and Saturday. Friday
will kick off with a chili and chowder feed. Registration for 150 people is
still open. The advertised deadline for registration is January 15 but

5. JohnB: Cannon Beach Chorus begins its weekly Monday evening rehearsals
at 6:30 PM at the Presbyterian Church. The goal of the Chorus is fun. The

come the next or the following.

6. PatF: Buyers are coming back! 2010 real estate activity in Cannon beach
was up nicely over 2009. A total of 50 properties were sold in 2010 versus
24 in 2009. Sales of properties over $1 million went from one in 2009 to
five in 2010. More info at www.cannonbeachrealestate.com

7. Keith C: The next World of Haystack Rock Library Lecture Series will be
held tomorrow Thursday Jan 6th at 7pm at the Cannon Beach Library. North
Coast Land Conservancy Director Katie Volke will be speaking about "The
Landscape of the Whale, a Plan for the Greater Ecola Natural Area". It
promises to be another excellent (free) presentation, co-sponsored by the
Cannon Beach Library and the Friends of Haystack Rock.

8. TracyA: The band Radio Cowboy will be playing at Lush Wine Bar Saturday,
January 29 at 8 PM. Come one. Come all. Have fun. "Baga's Front Room" is
First Wednesdays - live music by our own Paul Dueber, Peter Dueber, Bill
Steidel and friends. Today is the first Wednesday of the month.

9. TracyA: At last night's city Council meeting a resolution was passed to
support the Oregon State proposed law banning single-use plastic bags.
George: Michael Manzulli, who first brought this issue to the Wednesday
morning meeting, reported back by e-mail that reusing singel-use plastic
bags by businesses would not be allowed under the new law.

10. StephanieA: I recently slipped on an icy surface and fell and hit my
head. Luckily I was in good enough condition to get myself to the clinic
near my work. Several things occurred to me as result of this incident.
Number one: what if I had been knocked out. Would anyone have known who to
contact? Number two: what liability do we as shop owners and business owners
face in such instances? We all need to be prepared for such emergencies.

11. JeanieMc: During my recent travels by Amtrak I learned that the Portland
Amtrak station would be willing to carry our Cannon Beach Magazine and
possibly other brochures from our area.

12. NalaC: Courtesy of the Seaside Aquarium Nala passed out 2011 official
tide table books. These are the tides as measured by NOAA at the North Jetty

Cannon Beach. These tides are also published in the Cannon Beach Magazine,
the Chamber website and on www.Cannon <http://www.Cannon-Beach.net>

3. Wendy: Occupancy at Ocean Lodge has not been great this week, but this
weekend should be close to full. Brian: House rentals are down from what
they had expected.

4. George: Retail continues to struggle, both because of lack of people and
lack of money. For small retailers to survive they must offer what the
giants and chains do not - customer service, personal attention, unique
products and collections, a memorable experience, etc

5. JimK: Icefire Glassworks does not discount. This would devalue the
work. Instead they educate people on the quality of their work. Stephanie
also says she adds value by educating people about pieces in her gallery.
Others talked about how everyone seems to be looking for bargains/deals.
Those not offering bargains/deals are being passed over. George: News
reports are that retail is up nationally by 3-4% this Holiday season. With
the kind of discounting that has been taking place everywhere, retailers may
be doing the sales but at the expense of their profit.

6. KristineG: Many owners may understand the importance of customer
service, but how do you get the message to the front line? One suggestion
was to have a program of rewarding employees/businesses that score well with
a secret shopper. Another idea was to use comment cards. Maybe the
Information Center could solicit comments and share those with businesses.

7. Wendy: Two books recommended are Primal Leadership and Ordinary
Greatness.

8. George: ODOT just sent out a notice that they will be holding and Open

9. George: Rich Mays, City Manager will address the WMM on January 12 with
"The State of the City". Rich was asked to do so.

10. Michael Manzulli: The Northwest Grocers Assn is encouraging
municipalities to support the State's drive to ban single use plastic bags.
Our City Council will be considering this at their Tuesday Jan 4th meeting.
Other coastal towns like Newport and Lincoln City are ahead of Cannon Beach
in this regard. This topic led to discussion of recycling in Cannon Beach -
not for residents, but for visitors. Many visitors recycle at home and when
here are not offered bins on our streets or in our shopping areas.

11. George: A teacher/mother visiting Cannon Beach suggested we look into
having a December High School Choir Caroling competition. Not only would
this bring students, parents and relatives to town, but also spectators who
would boost the local economy.

12. Prudence: Please bring rack materials of your business to upcoming WMMs
for display at the opening night of The Cannon Beach Arts Assn's Jan 28-30
event - "Cannon Beach Arts Symposium with Taylor Branch". CBAA already has
partners on this event and would like anyone who wishes to become a partner
