Notice 1: George, could you please pass on to the list that the SETD is having an emergency work session tomorrow that will determine the plans and options- stops and frequency of bus service- that the board will be voting on on Monday. This work session is important to attend if anyone or their families or employees use the bus. They are currently looking at options which include the possibility of no stop at the RV park in cannon beach and stops only on 101 going north so no sunset park either. That is one of the options being discussed other options include stoping the dail-a-ride service. Input from the greater public is desperately needed. The interim director is not from the area and does not know the road conditions, he does know how to run a transit district (hood river), but needs help with the intricacies of our coastal communities and ridership. The work session is at 9AM at the transit building in Astoria. And the board will vote on monday at 9AM same place. Thank you- Kathy Klezcek – La Luna Loca

Robert and April Knecht, Cannon Beach Treasure Co. just opened on Hemlock
Street at #255 Suite C-2 (across from Bruce's). Featuring sunken and buried
treasures lost to the light of day for centuries - coins, jewelry,
antiquities, and artifacts. Robert is originally from Crescent City and got
started 20 years ago in Key Largo working with treasure hunters there. He
has always been his own boss, most recently working in marketing. He and
April married 4 years ago. April is originally from San Francisco and had
been working in TV production. They honeymooned in Newport Oregon and began
doing Art Festivals with their treasures. Both grew up in retail, April's
parents had a flower shop and Robert's had a tackle and bait shop. Just
before Christmas last year, they visited Cannon Beach and fell in love with

2. Erin/Wendy: Due to the dire financial situation, SETD has announced that
starting April 1, the Cannon Beach Shuttle is discontinued. The bus to and
from Seaside will be cut from every hour to every two hours, besides
starting later and stopping earlier. SETD has another board meeting
scheduled for Thursday night. Kathy: This is a great loss to Cannon Beach.
This undermines the PR that we spread about our free shuttle and put
pressure on our already limited parking. Encourage our City Council to
support a local shuttle. Write to council at cbor.us.
3. Jenee: The SOLV Spring Beach Cleanup is set for this Saturday (Mar 26)
from 10a-1p. To volunteer call 800-333-SOLV, visit www.SOLV.org or show up
at City Hall on Sat. Jenee is the local coordinator -

4. Nala: HRAP (Haystack Rock Awareness Program) is on the beach this week
during Oregon Spring Break. In spite of the weather, people are out. HRAP's
annual volunteer training program begins Saturday April 2 - 12p -4p. Contact

attended the training last year and found it very informative and
interesting.
5. Nala: The current series of free lectures co-sponsored by the Friend of
Haystack Rock and the Cannon Beach Library comes to an end Thursday Arpil 7
at 7pm at the Library - Ramona Radonich, Interpretive Ranger, OR Parks and
Rec will speak on "Survivor: Tidepools".
6. Ann: Sunday is another Cupcake Sunday at Found in Midtown. Sleepy Monk
Coffee is now open Fridays thru Tuesdays as is the Irish Table Restaurant.
7. Linda/Jenee: The American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life" fundraiser
for Clatsop County is set for July 9th & 10th - 10am Saturday to 10am Sunday

9. Wendy: It appears that the Motel Tax bills are still in committee, but
are still moving forward. George: According to a Feb 15th Daily Astorian
article, two Senate bills being sponsored by Sen. Betsy Johnson,
D-Scappoose, could change the uses for lodging tax dollars that fall under
the current law's strict definitions. The bills would allow cities and other
collectors of lodging taxes to apply them to more general uses, if those
uses can be tied to tourism. George and others expressed concern that if not
for the current state requirement, none of the lodging tax dollars would be
used for PR and that the proposed changes would result in no funds from any
future increases being used for PR. BobNer suggested we invite Betsy to a
WMM. George e-mailed her but did not hear back so re-sent his message.
10. Wendy: Anyone interested in being part of a Cannon Beach Lodging
Association should contact her at wendy at theoceachlodge.com. George suggest
that the group look at becoming a committee of the Chamber as the Cannon
Beach Culinary Arts Association just did.
11. George: The Tolovana Arts Colony has openings for anyone who wants to
teach their craft during the upcoming Spring Quarter - Apr 24-June 18. Call

12. George: The Seaside Signal reports that "A Seattle-based consulting team
is recommending the removal of the west bank berm between the Necanicum
River and Highway 101 and constructing a 400-foot berm on the east side of
the highway to ease the flooding along U.S. Highway 101. Consultants are
also recommending crews construct berms at the RV Park and Beerman Creek or
raise a portion of the highway, along with constructing a berm north of
Beerman Creek and a berm/floodwall on Dooley Bridge. "Our overall goal is to
provide uninterrupted function of Highway 101 during most years and to
reduce the frequency and severity of flooding," said Vaughn Collins, senior
engineer for Northwest Hydraulic Consultants of Seattle. "We are not trying
to stop it." Kathy expressed concern that this was not enough and that more
should be done. The project as proposed is to cost approx $500K.
13 Spring Break: Wendy: The Ocean Lodge filled up last weekend but last
minute. Rooms are available this week though. John: Sweet Basil's was/is
slow. BobVan: Mo's continues to be slow. George: The parking lot at the
Outlet Mall in Seaside yesterday from about 1230 to 230 was somewhere
between half and two thirds full.

George -- firetruck outside window, turned on TV
Sara Smith Macintosh -- New to the group and a lawyer. She is a member of
the Manzanita Business
Alliance -- She heard about the pending tsunami at 5am - then heard sirens
-- She lives 1 1/2 block
from the ocean -- was not prepared - There was a question among the
neighbors -- to take the car
or no? Answer: The earth did not shake here, we can take our cars.
Kay Covert -- Windermere Manzanita -- Also new and a member of the Srategic
Business Alliance. -
- "I am here to learn." -- She is also a member of the emergency volunteer
corps -
Stephanie A - Has roots from Manzanita and went through her first tsunami
warning in Manzanita --
When she finally did leave she parked up on the hwy -- Now she doesn't have
a phone at home --
Does have TV, but not online -- son in Hawaii -- "Everybody in the family
called him first then me.
There were 23 messages on my phone when I got to work." -- Her next
notification was at 7am when
the sirens sounded meaning that she had 15 minutes to leave. - "I never did
hear an all clear." -- She
went to Camp 18 and had a nice breakfast and came back at about 2pm. "The
town was filled." --
This was a learning lesson.
Megan-- Indicates she didn't know about it until 6:30 when she woke up -
Half of the town on top of
my hill." -- She also recommended we check out the following website:

Carol H -- Indicated she was awakened by a staff member who sleeps with a
scanner -- They then
marshalled their people to get the word out to let other people know -- "We
notified our employees -
- our team worked well together -- Lee Ann called about 1:45."
Linda D -- At 11:45pm she got a NOAA advisory -- "Then about 1 or so it went
off again and they
upgraded it to a warning." -- She recommends the radios, as "You know
exactly what is happening,
when." -- She lives in Warrenton so she just stayed home.
Carmen -- Was awakened by her daughter at 11:45pm. -- "She told me about the
warning. I turned
on the TV and she begged me to come to Portland. I packed up my car and left
-- it was eerie. When
I got to the junction, I got a reverse 911 call on my cell I was very
surprised because I thought I was
one of the few -- looked in my rear view mirror and it was like summer with
a long line of people
heading to Portland: A constant speed. On 26 there were clusters of cars and
2 accidents. Camp 18
was packed -- I made it to Portland -- came back home on Friday -- 7pm." She
continued with the
fact that there was some damage even to South America, south of Lima. -- She
continued, "At 5:30
Aaron Meyer called me. He was supposed to have assemblies at the schools in
the morning and then
the evening and wanted to know what to do. Since the schools are closed we
cancelled it. Yet she
received many calls from people asking about the 7pm concert. -- "There
were a lot of people
interested in it." -- They are now in the process of coordinating with the
school to reschedule --
now towards the end of May for the assembly for the schools. -- She
indicated that there had been
no formal communication about the cancellation for those who might have
tried to attend.
Michael -- He has a mother and sister in Florence -- "My sister freaked
out." -- His opinion was
that if it wipes out Hawaii then he was going to worry. He went to the
office and then decided to go
up to Neakahnie Mountain. He began taking pics of the coastline every 15
minutes, -- "Then it
became a normal day."
Patti - Was contacted by her boss in Portland -- "Her husband was called
in." -- Patti "..spent the
time with Eric our emergency coordinator getting our best info from the TV."
-- She felt that the City
of Seaside had it more together -- Later they evacuated the lower floor of
the hospital just to be safe.
Lesle - Was aware of the crisis as soon as it came on the TV. Had already
packed the car by the time
her son called at about 1:30am urging her to evacuate. She called her
ex-husband Jack who then
indicated he had been called out as a CERT volunteer, so she went up
Broadway where she knows
several friends. She stayed with one friend watching the news until about
9am then went home.
Kathy -- "My first reaction was to watch the TV, then call my tenants in
town: they were up. Then I
called my staff to make sure they were safe and prepared: I called in the
order they live from the
beach. I woke up some of them and then got a call back with thank you for
the warning. Then the fire
department went by announcing that we needed to go to higher ground. Okay.
My worry is that there
was a lot of emphasis put on 7 when the news was saying that would be just
the first of many waves.
When 7:30 didn't happen, people started to drive off right away. They seemed
to be unaware that as
time goes on the waves could get bigger. After 7:30 the cars began moving
again and yet there was
no all clear. It didn't seem like people were expecting that type of thing
either."
Kari -- Her oldest son called 11:30 pm. "I stayed up all night to watch the
tragedy. At 5:30 I went up
to the north entrance and sat in my car."
Patrick -- "I was awakened by Wendy Higgins. First we made sure the gasoline
at RV resort was
opened so we could take care of community members leaving town.
-- Then we determined how to best deliver the message to our hotel guests."
Wendy had prepared
bagels and snacks for the guests at their hotel and ended up helping
those at the Stephanie Inn as well. After ensuring his staff and guests were
taken care of, he and his
family "hung out" on high ground the majority of the day -- "We had about
10 people check out
because of the warning and perhaps another dozen cancel." -- He then
related a story about a flood
insurance policy which had expired March 9. He was told by his agent that
they were covered, but a
question still remains about the gap between policy expiration and payment
of the new invoice.
Gary -- "I was preparing for our Savor Cannon Beach event on Thursday,
driving through flooded
highway thinking, can this get any worse? We had a great event on Thursday,
the wine throw down,
then I went home and watched the news. I thought, there may be something.
Hearing that what
happens in Hawaii would be the first sign, I dozed off. At 3am there was a
siren or Jackson pulling at
my arm because of the siren. I got up and just monitored things -- social
media -- We would do
what we could do with social media -- At about 6 we went up to Haystack
Heights. -- If you watched
the news -- I would have thought it was time to call FEMA -- They were on
the extreme side -- What
they were doing on social media -- They were saying the tide has receded in
Cannon Beach which
means a tsunami is building. I got on and sent a message -- "Hey KATU news:
The tide has receded
and exposed a giant rock in the form of a haystack." -- We came back down at
11:30 to set up for
our next event -- we missed only one event --
Brian -- "We had 6-8 houses in. It is a bit more complicated to notify our
guests because they are
not all one property." -- He received a call at 1:30 from Linda who is on
the fire board, then they
started calling guests and calling staff. "We all stayed home and watched
the news. Then we went out
later and made physical contact with the guests we had not been able to
reach earlier. All of our
guests stayed and we had 10 check ins that day and they all came. -- He
continued to say they had
warned the pending arrivals of the situation and that they have had a plan
in place for about 5 years.
"We will review that this week and make changes." - He reminded us that the
reverse 911 calls are a
courtesy. It is an automated system that keeps going until it it answered.
John B -- Stated that his comparison is from Kansas and tornado warnings.
They have three stages:
advisories and watches and warnings. "In Kansas the sirens blow and that is
the time to start visiting
with your neighbors about what is about to occur. We went to Brian and
Barb's to watch -- impending
clarity or doom depending on which media you watch."
Bob Neroni -- "If this is as big as it was in Japan what do we do? They keep
reassessing what is the
safe area to go -- where do we go -- we will be surrounded by water."
Carol -- "In Japan the wave ran 6 miles inland."
Recap of savor Cannon Beach by Gary -- "We hedged our bets by going to
sponsors who had bought
advanced tickets -- a hedge against inclimate weather -- helping the
children's center -- 100
tickets were sold in advance -- Of 40 tickets sold -- 38 showed up on
Thursday night and the other
2 on Friday. I didn't see those people. I don't know that anybody left. So
events went off without a
hitch - the crowds were good for all events -- it is possible especially the
saturday event could have
been better attended --
Bob N -- "It felt like it was 100 people less this year."
Gary -- "Not all of the tickets were redeemed for the wine walk. The good
news is they sold 300+
tickets -- we sold 100 thanks to the sponsor -- the children's center did
make their goal -- my goal
was higher than that - we may have had closer to 500 without all of the
excitement.
Patrick -- "The events seemed to be better organized and publicized this
year."
Gary -- "The Children's Center made their money....it is kind of a miracle.
We will be writing them a
check ourselves for $2,500 -- more monies to come in -- I think their goal
was $10,000 and I think
they made it."
Carmen -- "We had cancelled the olive oil tasting on Friday. On
Saturday I had a tea and had people
there and did the olive oil tasting. I did walk through town -- l noticed
there were fewer people than
last year."
Bob -- "Salt was at 11 and we tested over 80 people."
Kathy -- "From a retail perspective, the event didn't help sales but the
atmosphere and the people
around were amazing. The sun coming out helped - Thanks Gary -- in general
atmosphere and
mood of people -- feedback -- they were in a good mood and taking in things
and talking about
coming back -- planning other things -- for them to have never been here and
plan to come back, I
thought was really good."
Gary -- "In the past it ha been largely a local event, but we wanted to make
it a destination. 80% of
tickets sold were from out of town so I know we made some gains in that
area. One pereson said 'It
was really fun and we got to go to a lot of places we hadn't been before.'
Even some of the locals said
they went in places they hadn't been in years."
Bob -- "An overwhelming sigh of relief. Please make this happen again. We
had tons of messages
asking about not canceling, mostly locals -- It was busy -- from a shopping
standpoint,"
Sarah -- "I attended the event from Manzanita as a tourist. We came up with
another couple. Most of
the Manzanita businesses did not know about it. We enjoyed the event. We
went to only the spots
that had wine tasting -- 2-5 went to Newman's for lunch -- scheduled speaker
did not show but we
had a wonderful lunch. We did shop and everybody wanted to go where there
was wine. At EVOO I
bought salt."
Patrick - Spring break report -- good bookings but not so far out --
predicated to an extended
forecast.
Carmen -- This spring a bit lower than last year -- but usually we get a lot
of drop ins -- I also feel
we can have some cancellation in expectation of the gas price increase -
that happened last time the
gas prices increased as well and the weather is not helping --
Patti -- some of the hotels are thinking about offering a gas card
Lesle -- Follow up from last week's comment on SBDC. "The point in my
message was intended to be
that I hope the college will learn from this outpouring of support for Jim
Entler's SBM program that
the SBDC could also be that important to the community." In my opinion, the
SBDC needs a strong
consistent director who will stick with the program and have a community
presence. It is my
understanding that the program has recently been awarded additional funding
for staffing and they
are in the process of seeking a new executive director. With hard work and
community support the
SBDC can enjoy the same stellar reputation and the same level of service to
businesses in the
community that we have come to know from the SBM program/Jim Entler.

Washington Wine Throwdown" Saturday's $25 Wine Walk tickets are available at
the Chamber. 24 Wineries are scheduled. Spread the word about this event
through your website, Facebook, Twitter, etc. The event website is at

permitted on the street. The future of this event could be jeopardized by
OLCC if this rule is not followed. If you are a wine venue, post a sign at
the exit next to a container - "NO WINE BEYOND THIS POINT"
2. Lindsey: The Wine Bar at Sweet Basils has a weekend of "clean fun and

4. Wendy/Carol/Lesle: A letter from Jim Entler, the director/instructor for
CCC's Small Business Management Program, stated that the Board has decided
not to restructure the program after all. They were moved by those who spoke
and wrote in favor of it. They need at least 20 new students per year for
the program to continue. Lesle went on to say event though this College
Program has been so valuable, the State's Small Business Development Center
has not fulfilled its role in helping business.
5. George: Meeting on the progress of the study of Highway 101 Flooding -
March 21 at 4 pm at the Bob Chisholm Senior Center located at 1225 Avenue A
in Seaside.

7. Lesle: The Board of Commissioners for the Sunset Empire Transportation
District will hold a public meeting on Wednesday March 9th, 2011 at 2:00
p.m. at the Astoria Transit Center located at 900 Marine Drive in Astoria.
This meeting will allow for public comment and consideration on the
following topics: Possible fixed route bus service cuts, Dial-A-Ride service
cuts, Fare increase and possible changes in the operations of the Astoria
Transit Center. This meeting is handicap accessible and alternative formats
are available upon request by calling 503-861-7433 and TDD 1-800-735-2900
8. Wendy/Jim: 12 Days of Earth Day begins Wednesday April 13 at 9am with
the School Children welcoming home the tufted puffin to Haystack Rock. Daily
happenings continue thru Sunday April 24. "Shred Day" is Friday April 22
from 10a-2p at the mid-town parking lot. Bring your papers to be shredded.

1. Debbie: Business After Hours today at Coaster Construction at 390 Elk
Creek Road from 430p to 630p. Pass the RV Park on your left and find Coaster
Construction on your left.
2. Gary: Savor Cannon Beach/Wine Walk has sold 100 tickets already. Wine
Walk tickets are available at the Chamber. 24 Wineries are scheduled, more
are desired. Spread the word about this event through your website,
Facebook, Twitter, etc. The event website is at www.savorcannonbeach.com.
Remember that no open wine containers are permitted on the street. The
future of this event could be jeopardized by OLCC if this rule is not
followed. If you are a wine venue, post a sign at the exit next to a
container - "NO WINE BEYOND THIS POINT"
3. Stephanie: In spite of the snow, Fisher Poets in Astoria was a big
success. The venues' were crowded and the town was busy. This event has
grown over the years. 5000 tickets were sold.
4. CarmenS: Violinist Aaron Meyer (who is doing a Children's Music Workshop
in June at Sea Ranch) is donating 40-minute sessions at CB Elementary on
March 11th at 1230pm , That same day at 10am at Gearhart Elementary and
210pm at Broadway Middle School. That evening at 7pm will be his concert at
Sea Ranch Resort's Sundance Event Lodge. www.searanchrv.com
5. CarmenS: Last weekend's Yoga Festival was great. Those attending were
very pleased. 85 tickets were sold in advance and more were sold last
minute. Wendy, Frank & Brian all reported that they saw little lodging

6. Pia: "A. Lincoln" A one-man play on the life of Abraham Lincoln plays
one night only: Saturday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. The play that just ended
"Never the Sinner" met and surpassed its projected income..

10. Gary: Last night's meeting at Clatsop CC was standing room only as
supporters of the Small Business Development Program packed the house at
CCC. The Board did not appear to be moved, explaining that hard decisions
had to be made for economic reasons. They said the program will continue but
without it's director Jim Entler. In one week a decision will be made. In

12. George: It was encouraging to hear vendors at the apparel show in Vegas
say they were having a good show. Hopefully consumers will share the
optimism.
13. Gary: Coast Explorer Magazine's Spring issue is out. Find it throughout
town and up and down the coast. Virtual copy is coming to

14. Gary: In the works are Marketing Workshops at the Chamber. Stay tuned.
15. George: With the Executive Director position at the Chamber still
vacant, it is important that Annual Supporters and Event Sponsors be
pro-active this year. The program will be the same this year as it was last

16. Gary: For budgetary reasons, the administration at Clatsop Community
College is recommending to the Board that the Small Business Development
Program be dropped by the college and moved to the Small Business
Development Center. There is concern that the program would suffer without
the guidance and leadership of the person who has done it for 20 years and
knows the area and it's businesses so well. The Board will be taking
community input Tuesday March 1 at 630pm in Columbia Hall Room 219.
17. George: Sunset Empire Transit District (SETD) has a Board position
opening. SETD operates the bus system from Astoria to Nehalem, including
Cannon Beach. They meet once a month for a meeting that lasts 2 hours. They
receive packets a week in advance. Sometimes they will have a special
meeting during the month. People are needed who are willing to give time
and business knowledge to the Board. You would have to go the court house
and register for the May election, It would cost you $10.00. The position
that will be open is # 7. The person who has served for 8 years is leaving
due to her job.
18. Dale: The History Center has (after a three year wait) been given the
green light on a Smithsonian Exhibit during July and August. Volunteers are
needed. There is a globe that is part of the Exhibit that is required to be
"guarded" during all open hours. Contact Dale at pada at bmi.net.
