1. DaleS: Vox Eclectique will wow us this weekend with Jazz, Folk, Classic
American, as well as a few show tunes. All ages. Saturday May 28 at 730pm at
the History Center www.cbhistory.org.

2. Robert and April Knecht: Cannon Beach Treasure Co recently opened
downtown across from Bruce’s Candy Kitchen. Their store features sunken and
buried treasures lost to the light of day for centuries - coins, jewelry,
antiquities, and artifacts. Robert is originally from Crescent City and got
started 20 years ago in Key Largo working with treasure hunters there. He
has always been his own boss, most recently working in marketing. He and
April married 4 years ago. April is originally from San Francisco and had
been working in TV production. They honeymooned in Newport Oregon and began
doing Art Festivals with their treasures. Both grew up in retail, April's
parents had a flower shop and Robert's had a tackle and bait shop. Just
before Christmas last year, they visited Cannon Beach and fell in love with
the town. Robert’s main interest is the “story” behind the treasure. Visit
their website at www.cannonbeachtreasure.com. Call 503-436-1626 E-mail them
treasure at cannonbeachtreasure.com.

3. PatrickN: Freightliner is back at it with their Product Verification
program. Patrick counted 10 large truck/trailers marked with “Product
Validation” in Seaside recently. Last year he brought this to our attention.
These trucks travel back and forth on Hwy 26 over and over as product
testing. Patrick and others expressed concern about the impact of this
program on vacationers headed to the beach, especially as summer arrives.

your letter off to ODOT regarding Hwy 26 construction this summer.

5 CarmenS: CEDC’s recent class on Hospitality by Patrick Nofield was
very good, but not very well attended. CEDC is trying to help businesses.
Kevin Leahy of CEDC has offered to meet with individuals – 503-338-2402.
George and Kathy reported that they attended CEDC’s “Tune up your business”
no-cost seminar yesterday at City Hall. Only three people from Cannon Beach
attended, plus two from Seaside and two from Ilwaco. The
presenter/presentation was good, but the content was too rudimentary.

6. RobertK: Three times this year Robert and April took taffy, CB Magazines
and brochures to the Port of Astoria to greet bus tour guests. They were
well received. On one occasion they put out over 200 packets including
brochures from their business, Cannon Beach Treasure Co. No one showed up at
their shop though. People coming to Cannon Beach do not have enough time. We
need to convince Bruce at Sundial and whoever else to offer a four-hour
Cannon Beach only tour. . Send suggestions/feedback to Herb Florer Deputy
Director Port of Astoria 422 Gateway Ave, Suite 100 Astoria OR 97103.

Cannon Beach. Rob will be contacting people for info and ads. OR Coast
Visitors Assn (OCVA) is dropping Rob as their publisher and therefore will
not be distributing 50,000 Mile by Mile guides as they have been doing in
past years. Mile by Mile will continue with it 80,000 distribution outside
OCVA.

8. PatrickN: OCVA gets nearly $500K from State Motel Tax monies to promote
the Oregon Coast – all 300 miles. A group should/could be formed to better
represent the North Coast. Money could be requested from the State. OCVA
will be hosting a public meeting on Friday, June 3rd, 2011, 9:00 am - 10:30
am at the Inn At Otter Crest in Otter Rock. The Inn At Otter Crest is
located at 301 Otter Crest Drive, Otter Rock (almost 6 miles south of Depoe
Bay or almost 8 miles north of Newport) If you would like to attend the
public meeting, please RSVP to fun at ThePeoplesCoast.com by Wednesday, June
1st, 2011. See http://visittheoregoncoast.com.

9. GeorgeV: ODOT has announced that variable speed is in effect on Hwy 26
near Hwy 47 (Staley’s Junction). Electronic speed limit signs will post
speeds between 30 and 50 depending on the volume of traffic. This is an
interim solution to the turning problems at the Hwy 47 intersection. Future
plans call for a freeway interchange. See
www.oregon.gov/ODOT/HWY/REGION1/staleys.

Jason.A.Tell at odot.state.or.us ; Shelli.Romero at odot.state.or.us ;

Before using wording from this letter, go to
http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/HWY/REGION2/US26_VolmerandJohnsonCreek.shtml to
see the latest info:

Dear Jason Tell and Region 1 ODOT officials,

As Region 1 Manager I feel it is important to remind you of the assurances
and promises made by you personally and on behalf of ODOT and I quote, “We
recognize concerns about the fragile economic conditions along the coast and
potential impact to tourism-dependent communities from a public perception
of a lengthy road closure.”

The latest set of projects planned for the time period BEGINNING in JULY
2011 and continuing thru DEC 2011, does not demonstrate even a good faith
effort on the part of ODOT to minimize the impact of construction on the
road that provides the means of access to the coast.

It is shocking that projects would be planned on 26 during the months of
July, August. This is especially surprising considering the statement by
Rick Little in September of 2009, , “there is no way” ODOT would embark on
such a summer project over a roadway whose average daily traffic (ADT) of
6900 climbs to 10,000 during the peak summer months.

Recently I had the misfortune of traveling on 26 eastbound on a Saturday at
the end of April. At 10AM, I was delayed in traffic by construction on 26
at the Volmer Creek and Johnson Creek sites. Heading eastbound at that hour
the delay was 20 minutes, I considered this misfortunate. What was more
disturbing was the line of traffic which numbered more than 100 cars (I
stopped counting at 100) heading westbound at 10AM on a Saturday in April.
Their delay was certainly longer than mine and also more detrimental to the
“public perception”. Those people are not likely to return to the coast
during the summer months, when you are predicting a 10min delay from single
lane flagging of traffic. Those people and their family and friends also
are very likely to share their experience with others and opt to go
elsewhere rather than be stuck on 26 with multiple potential delays.
Especially with Gas prices around Four dollars per gallon that can make for
a very costly journey to the coast.

Gas prices and the economy are having effects on us all. Please consider
the promises you and your office made to our communities on the coast as we
all struggle to make the best of situation. Keep in mind we have a short
“Summer Season”, and we were told that every effort would be made to not
negatively impact our coastal economy. Any construction on 26 during day
time hours should be avoided during the months of July and August.

this sign and post it in your window
www.cannon-beach.net/images/WelcomeCruiseShip.pdf. See schedule at
http://www.portofastoria.com/cruise_schedule-2011.html. Jim McDonald has
offered to cover May 5, 9, 19 and 24. April and Robert Knecht (CB Treasure
Co) are covering today, May 20 and 28th . That leaves May 15, 16. Let me
know if you can cover one or both of those days.

2. Patrick/Wendy/George: Motel Tax revenues for the qtr ended 3/30/2011
were down 13%. It has very rarely been down and never double digits. The
fiscal year to date decline is 4%. TAC money is distributed by the amounts
collected, therefore groups receiving dollars may not get all that was
planned for. George suggested that the reserve held back for unexpected
opportunities be used to make up any shortfall.

3. GeorgeV: The Chamber’s May Business After Hours will be at CB Treasure
Company (on Hemlock St across from Bruces) Tuesday May 17th 430-630pm.

4. DaleS” TONIGHT at 7pm is the dedication reception of the Cannon Beach

6. KathyK: The progress on getting our shuttle back is stalled by the lack
of feedback from the community. Send your input to council at cbor.us to get to
all councilors. The next Council Meeting is June 7th at 7pm. Get your letter
in prior to that and then attend that meeting. SETD still has not removed
the old schedules posted at the old stops. Wendy will let Rich know of this.

7. GeorgeV: HRAP’s next volunteer training is Saturday May 14th from 10am
to 2pm at City Hall. May 1 marked the beginning of HRAP’s daily beach

9. CarmenS: Clatsop Community College has responded to us by offering
classes we asked for and now they are having to cancel these classes for
lack of interest. We need to support them by finding people to fill these
class offerings. Patrick Nofield is teaching a class - Guest Service
Training at the South County campus Room 2, Tuesday May 17th 2:00-5:00pm and
Wednesday May 18th Cost $50.00 For Information On Workforce Training,
Contact: Paula Duncan, Education For Life Coordinator 503-338-2408.

10. WendyH: Customer service is a topic that has come up often at our WMMs.
Two events this past week have people thinking and talking about it again –
The Chick-fil-A Leadercast event last Friday and Zingerman’s Customer
Service presentation yesterday at Coaster Theatre. As we went around the
table, everyone who attended spoke highly of these events and of the value
of their content. Praise went out to Wendy for her leadership in bringing
the Chick-fil-A Leadercast event to the coast and to Martin Hospitality for
bringing the Zingerman’s Customer Service presentation to Cannon Beach and
sharing it with the entire community. There was no doubt in the room that
giving Great Customer Service throughout Cannon Beach would benefit all. Go
the extra mile and give people something they’re not asking for and wouldn’t
expect – exceed expectations. And do it all accurately, politely and
enthusiastically. Teach great customer service by example – not just to
customers and guests, but to staff, co-workers, suppliers, etc. Welcome and
document complaints, requests and compliments. Improve your business based
on this feedback.

11. TracyA: Lane PR, the Chamber’s new PR Firm has arranged for travel
writers to visit Cannon Beach. One was here this past weekend and more are
coming in the weeks ahead. They will be touring many businesses while in
town. They will be accompanied most of the time, but not all the time. Make
sure they get great customer service by giving great customer service to
everyone.

12. GeorgeV:. Chamber Board Nominations. James Slentz, new manager at Mo’s,
has added himself. He joins Christen Allsop, Dale Shafer, Brian Olson, Carol
Hungerford, and Tracy Abel to fill 4 positions. Members have till May 17
(next Board Meeting) to nominate themselves by submitting a letter to the
Chamber. Ballots go out after that and are due in by June 21 (the June Board
meeting). E-mail to chamber at cbor.us.

13. GeorgeV: The final selection process and contract with a new Chamber
Executive Director is just about complete. June should see the new Director
in place full time and possibly sooner.

1. GeorgeV: Jim McDonald (Tolovana Inn) is in Astoria this morning meeting
the Tour Bus from the Cruise Ship. He is distributing Cannon Beach Magazines
and other items. He is back up there tomorrow and again on Monday. If you
have something to include in a goodie bag, drop it at the Chamber. Print
this sign and post it in your window
www.cannon-beach.net/images/WelcomeCruiseShip.pdf. See schedule at
http://www.portofastoria.com/cruise_schedule-2011.html. Jim has offered to

offered May 20 and 28th . That leaves May 11, 15, 16. Let me know if you can
cover any of those days.

2. GeorgeV: Over Spring Unveiling Weekend, sales at El Mundo For Men were
good, but sales at George Vetter FotoArt were not so good. The nice weather
had people out and about, but very few people, when asked, said that they
knew of the event before arriving to town. The exception was during the
gallery’s scheduled 230pm Unveiling. Approx ¾ of the 30 people in attendance
said they did know before arriving. Ann said traffic was good at Found. She
credited the weather. Robert said CB Treasure company, having just moved to
the front space for the weekend, saw good traffic. Sunday was a good sales
day. Prudence said the Cannon Beach Gallery (CBAA) reception on Saturday was
full. They had a book signing and the books sold out. Stephanie said Primary
Elements had a stronger Friday and Sunday than expected, but that Saturday’s
Unveiling was down. Erin, Cannon Beach Gazette, said she observed lots of
lookers, but not a lot of buyers. Bob said EVOO had a good weekend both at
their dinners and in the store. Only a couple people each night said they
were in town for Spring Unveiling. Lindsey said The Wine Bar at Sweet Basils
had good traffic. Tracy said Lush Wine Bar’s Friday was normal and they were
closed Saturday for her Birthday Bash at the Legion. The Crab Festival in
Astoria was something that people in town were mentioning. Seems people came
down here after that. George said the Conference Center’s graduation of 150
students from the Bible School takes place annually during Spring Unveiling.
Parents and relatives of those people were in town along with the Ferraris
on Second Street next to Morris’s Fireside Restaurant. The number of
Ferraris was down and some owners said that the number of people looking at
them was down.

3. KathyK: “On my way to Portland on Saturday at 10am there were 100 cars
lined up at the bridge construction waiting to get to the beach”. Catriona
said she went to Portland on Sunday at 4pm and waited 30 minutes. Cars
coming to the beach were backed up for 5 miles. Kathy suggested we all
contact ODOT letting them know of this problem. For construction info see

drawings/photographs of three submissions for art to be placed at the
parking lot on Antler Street next to the Lumberyard Restaurant. Approx $14K
has been budgeted by the city for this. Stephanie suggested this money be
better used for tsunami paths/shelters/supplies.

5. GaryH: The final accounting for Savor Cannon Beach is complete.
$2500 was given to the Children’s Center from the sale of Wine Walk tickets
and the support of event Sponsors Martin Hospitality, Escape Lodging and
Hallmark Resort. Along with Wine Walk ticket sales done by the Children’s
Center, the Center’s goal of $10K was nearly reached.

9. JimK: 12 Days of Earth Day created a welcome buzz in the media. The
event was successful and will be built on in another year. The Icefire
Glassworks raffle piece to benefit the Friends of Haystack Rock was won by
locals Bob and Sandy Lundy. As for the PR, Jim thinks we need to do a better
job of getting people to respond to the PR that we are getting. Kathy
suggested getting it out earlier and including some of the scheduled events
in the PR. Jim thinks a better partnership with the lodging community and
more information getting to their guests is needed. JohnM suggested using
www.netgreennews.com as a venue for getting the word out.

10. TracyA: The Chamber is in the middle of it’s annual sponsorship drive.

11. TracyA: The Chamber Board has replaced DVA Public Relations and
Advertising with Lane PR. Lane is out of Portland. They were one of the
firms considered when DVA was hired but at that time, hope was that TAC $
would come for Advertising and PR, not just PR. DVA was chosen because of
that. The relationship with DVA has not been what the Board had hoped for.

12. GeorgeV: Gary Hayes has withdrawn as a candidate for the Chamber Board.
Christen Allsop (Cannon Beach Yoga Arts) has added herself as has Dale
Shafer. They join Brian Olson, Carol Hungerford, and Tracy Abel to fill 4
positions. Members have till May 17 (next Board Meeting) to nominate

14. CarmenS: Aaron Meyer, concert violinist, has rescheduled his concert at
Sea Ranch for Friday May 27. Reception at 430pm and Concert at 7pm.

15. GeorgeV: Last Wednesday evening at the Coaster Theater was the annual
community Emergency Preparedness Forum. It was reiterated by Fire Chief
Cleve Rooper that when the big one comes, police and fire personnel have
been told their first priority is to get their families and themselves to
safe, high ground before the tsunami comes – in about 15-20 minutes. They
are to stay put until the all-clear has been sounded. Because a tsunami is
not just one wave, but a series of waves over a period of time, the
all-clear may not come for hours. People need to be prepared ahead of time
by knowing where they will go, what they will take, and how they will
reunite with their families afterward. People were encouraged to arrange
with people who have homes and shelter on high ground to store medicines,
special needs, food, water, blankets, etc with them. The last big-one was
311 years ago in 1700. Geologists have calculated that there has been a
big-one on the average of every 250 years over the past 10,000 years. The
big-one is likely to create sufficient damage to prevent people from
escaping the tsunami in their cars. Maybe bikes will be usable, but most
likely the escape will be on foot. Climb to the highest ground possible.
Three shelter areas are currently stocked with some supplies and will be
added to as time and money permit. Evacuation maps are available at City
Hall. KathyK: We need to be sure the shelters are high enough to be safe and
stocked with enough blankets and protection from the rain and cold to
prevent hypothermia. More info at
http://ci.cannon-beach.or.us/community/emergency.html.

16. GeorgeV: Cannon Beach Citizen reports that Citizen Editor Michael
Burkett announced his resignation, effective immediately. New journalistic
leadership is being sought.

2. GeorgeV: Jim McDonald will be handing Cannon Beach Magazines and a
goodie bag including taffy from Bruce’s to the 52 people scheduled for a bus
tour this morning to Cannon Beach. Sundial Travel, who has the contract with
the Port of Astoria for the tours has informed us that we can be at the bus
at the pier when the people board. [I just talked to Jim. He says he was
able to drive up to the bus at the pier. He chose to put the mags and bags
on the seats. He can do the next tour (May 4) and some others, but we need
volunteers for other dates – see last week’s notes below. Let me know what
dates you can do.] If you have something to include in the goodie bag, drop
it at the Chamber. Jim says the size of the bags seems to be an issue with
the driver, so only very small objects or paper is best.

3. CarolHun: The Chamber Board has put forward a slate of candidates for
the 4 open Board positions – Brian Olson, Carol Hungerford, Gary Hayes and
Tracy Abel. Members have till May 17 (next Board Meeting) to nominate

and are due in by June 21 (the June Board meeting).

4. CarolHun: 7 applicants for the Chamber Exec Dir position were
interviewed by phone on Monday. Four will come in for personal interviews
May 2-3.

put it on your website, facebook page and tweet it to the world. Lodging is
beginning to fill, but it’s not too late. All the galleries have unveilings
throughout the weekend. Saturday’s unveilings are scheduled a half hour

8. GeorgeV: Odot says “Work has begun on Volmer and Johnson Creek Bridges
on U.S. 26. The Oregon Department of Transportation is currently removing
and replacing the Volmer Creek and Johnson Creek Bridges on U.S. 26 just
east of U.S. 101. There is 24-hour flagging with single lane alternating
traffic during the demolition of the existing bridges and construction of
the new bridges between midnight on Sundays and 3 p.m. on Fridays at
Milepost 2 and 3. Delays are not anticipated to be over 20 minutes. The
majority of the work is anticipated to occur in the months of April through
July with completion expected in October of this year. For more information
on the bridge replacement project, please visit our web site at
http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/HWY/REGION2/US26_VolmerandJohnsonCreek.shtml.”
Kathy encourage everyone to express concern for traffic delays during our

like the sales tax.

schedules have still not been removed from the stops by SETD. Rich has a
meeting with them this week. Be sure your staff is informed. The bus comes
through downtown headed south 5 times a day, but only twice (the 9 o'clock

6. Patrick Corcoran - OSU Extension Service: With all the attention on
Earthquakes and Tsunamis after recent Pacific Ocean events, it is evitable
that visitors to Cannon Beach are going to bring up the topic. As hosts to
our guests we must be ready to "Own it, Frame it and Capitalize on it". We
"Own it" by saying "Yes, we do have earthquakes followed by tsunamis". We
"Frame it" by saying "The last big one was 311 years ago. Another could
happen today or maybe not for another 100 years or more." We "Capitalize on
it" by getting trained in knowing what to do in an emergency and letting our
guests know that we know what to do and that we will lead then to safety. We
need to know 1. What to be afraid of and what not to be afraid of. 2. Where
is high/safe ground. 3. How to reconnect with family afterward. 4. To stay
out of the Tsunami zone for 12 hours. Patrick is ready and willing to do 1
hour training sessions to groups. He stressed the importance of being
trained and ready to answer questions of our guests and the media before
June. One tip he had was that even if land and cell phone service is out,
satellite service such as One Star would be available. He pointed out the
importance of having walked the escape route from the various places that
one might expect to find oneself in the event of a quake. George suggested
that Patrick could/should work with the organizers of April 20th Community
Preparedness Meeting at the Coaster Theatre. More info at

9. Joanie Cramer - United States Junior Chamber National President - North
Carolina. A local chapter of Jaycees is being organized. Jessica Raphael of
Suzanne Elise, a former Jaycees member from Washington and her husband
called Joanie's attention to the need for a Jaycees chapter in our area.
There was a chapter that started back in the 40's, but disappeared in the
80's. Where a Chamber of Commerce is about the businesses, Jaycees is about
the individuals. Jaycees are 18 to 40 years old. Jaycees identify community
problems and solve them. There are 850 chapters across the USA with 24,000
members. There is an organization meeting today in Seaside at 6pm at the
Pizza Harbor. Free Pizza courtesy of the Seaside Chamber. Contact Jessica
503-298-9636 northcoastjaycees at gmail.com or Susan seasidesusan at gmail.com

10. The new "bare bones" bus schedule started Friday. The 101 serves Cannon
Beach along with Seaside, Warrenton and Astoria. There are 6 runs per day,
but the stops in Cannon Beach are minimal. The 2nd and last runs are the
same, but different from the 3rd, 4th & 5th which are the same. See and
print the Cannon Beach portion at www.cannon-beach.net/shuttle. For the full
schedule see www.ridethebus.org.

2. In answer to Wendy's question: "How was Oregon Break?" BobV: Mo's was
down - like the rest of 2011. DianaP: JP's was OK - better than the prior
weeks. SusanB: From the Chamber she was pleased to see the city parking lot
full. PatF: Real Estate Open Houses were slow. Robert and April: CB Treasure
Co just opened but they were please to have sold two rum bottles to two
differ people. FrankS: Waves Motel was down. Weather is a big factor.
GeorgeV: Retail was down. People in town and in the shops was down.
MelindaW: Pizza a Fetta was down as was Bella Espresso. KathyK: La Luna Loca
was down. People are not spending. Their wallets are not coming out of their
pockets. JimK: IceFire is seeing some spenders. Is encouraged after last 6
months. It's important to keep our spirits up. Engage people. Make them
comfortable and relaxed. BrianO: CB Vacation rentals had best March ever.
Lots of last minute renters. WendyH: Ocean Lodge didn't fill Saturday night.
First time that's happened on Spring Break. Also seeing lots of last minute

Magazine will feature our Sandcastle Contest with a photo of a sculpture by
the Ocean lodge taken by George. JimK: 12 Days of Earth Day will get mention
on National Geographic Traveler.

5. GeorgeV: State Senator Betsy Johnson returned George's call this morning
saying the three bills in committee regarding motel tax will not get out of
committee. Even so, she supports the third bill which she shaped with the
Mayor of Manzanita and a commissioner from Tillamook. This bill would allow
use of motel tax dollars for roads besides current allowed uses. Wendy
expressed concern that this new source of revenue to cities would push motel
taxes higher and higher.

6. RichM: The Tourism and Arts Commission (TAC) met yesterday. Midterm

1. New at today's meeting: Linda Yeager, Community Relationship Manager,
American Cancer Society, Astoria. 503-325-5158 linda.yeager at cancer.org.
Robert and April Knecht, Cannon Beach Treasure Co. just opened on Hemlock
Street at #255 Suite C-2 (across from Bruce's). Featuring sunken and buried
treasures lost to the light of day for centuries - coins, jewelry,
antiquities, and artifacts.
Just
before Christmas last year, they visited Cannon Beach and fell in love with
the town. Visit their website at www.cannonbeachtreasure.com. 503-436-1626
treasure at cannonbeachtreasure.com.

2. Erin/Wendy: Due to the dire financial situation, SETD has announced that
starting April 1, the Cannon Beach Shuttle is discontinued. The bus to and
from Seaside will be cut from every hour to every two hours, besides
starting later and stopping earlier. SETD has another board meeting
scheduled for Thursday night. Kathy: This is a great loss to Cannon Beach.
This undermines the PR that we spread about our free shuttle and put
pressure on our already limited parking. Encourage our City Council to
support a local shuttle. Write to council at cbor.us.

3. Jenee: The SOLV Spring Beach Cleanup is set for this Saturday (Mar 26)
from 10a-1p. To volunteer call 800-333-SOLV, visit www.SOLV.org or show up
at City Hall on Sat. Jenee is the local coordinator -
jenee at pacificalarmsystem.com.

4. Nala: HRAP (Haystack Rock Awareness Program) is on the beach this week
during Oregon Spring Break. In spite of the weather, people are out. HRAP's
annual volunteer training program begins Saturday April 2 - 12p -4p. Contact
Donna Lenius 503-436-8095 donna.lenius.hrap at gmail.com. George said he
attended the training last year and found it very informative and
interesting.

5. Nala: The current series of free lectures co-sponsored by the Friend of
Haystack Rock and the Cannon Beach Library comes to an end Thursday Arpil 7
at 7pm at the Library - Ramona Radonich, Interpretive Ranger, OR Parks and
Rec will speak on "Survivor: Tidepools".

6. Ann: Sunday is another Cupcake Sunday at Found in Midtown. Sleepy Monk
Coffee is now open Fridays thru Tuesdays as is the Irish Table Restaurant.

7. Linda/Jenee: The American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life" fundraiser
for Clatsop County is set for July 9th & 10th - 10am Saturday to 10am Sunday
at the Astoria High School Track Field. Contact John and Karen Chapman
503-440-6808, Rachael Whisler 503-298-7816 or Jenee & Bob Mushen
503-436-9292. www.relayforlife.org/clatsopcountyor.

8. John/Lindsey: Lloyd Jones, Blues Hall of Famer, will play the Wine Bar @
Sweet Basil's Saturday March 26 from 7-9p.503-436-1539
www.thewinebarcannonbeach.com

9. Wendy: It appears that the Motel Tax bills are still in committee, but
are still moving forward. George: According to a Feb 15th Daily Astorian
article, two Senate bills being sponsored by Sen. Betsy Johnson,
D-Scappoose, could change the uses for lodging tax dollars that fall under
the current law’s strict definitions. The bills would allow cities and other
collectors of lodging taxes to apply them to more general uses, if those
uses can be tied to tourism. George and others expressed concern that if not
for the current state requirement, none of the lodging tax dollars would be
used for PR and that the proposed changes would result in no funds from any
future increases being used for PR. BobNer suggested we invite Betsy to a
WMM. George e-mailed her but did not hear back so re-sent his message.

10. Wendy: Anyone interested in being part of a Cannon Beach Lodging
Association should contact her at wendy at theoceachlodge.com. George suggest
that the group look at becoming a committee of the Chamber as the Cannon
Beach Culinary Arts Association just did.

11. George: The Tolovana Arts Colony has openings for anyone who wants to
teach their craft during the upcoming Spring Quarter - Apr 24-June 18. Call
Jeff at 503-436-2000 tolovanaartscolony at gmail.com.
www.tolovanaartscolony.org.

12. George: The Seaside Signal reports that "A Seattle-based consulting team
is recommending the removal of the west bank berm between the Necanicum
River and Highway 101 and constructing a 400-foot berm on the east side of
the highway to ease the flooding along U.S. Highway 101. Consultants are
also recommending crews construct berms at the RV Park and Beerman Creek or
raise a portion of the highway, along with constructing a berm north of
Beerman Creek and a berm/floodwall on Dooley Bridge. "Our overall goal is to
provide uninterrupted function of Highway 101 during most years and to
reduce the frequency and severity of flooding," said Vaughn Collins, senior
engineer for Northwest Hydraulic Consultants of Seattle. "We are not trying
to stop it." Kathy expressed concern that this was not enough and that more
should be done. The project as proposed is to cost approx $500K.

13 Spring Break: Wendy: The Ocean Lodge filled up last weekend but last
minute. Rooms are available this week though. John: Sweet Basil's was/is
slow. BobVan: Mo's continues to be slow. George: The parking lot at the
Outlet Mall in Seaside yesterday from about 1230 to 230 was somewhere
between half and two thirds full.

Notes by Lesle Palmeri

New/Guests: Sarah Smyth McIntosh with Law Manzanita, Kay Covert with
Windermere Manzanita, Patti

Atkins with Providence Seaside Hospital

Sarah staffs the branch office in Manzanita and also works out of their main
office in Olympia,

spending every other week in an alternating location. The address is 1441
Laneda Avenue #3.

Kay has spent 21 years in real estate, originally with Ribbon Realty, the
last 13 with Windermere with

her husband, Walt, as partner. They cover from Arch Cape to Wheeler.

Question of the day: How did you learn about the tsunami warning?

George -- firetruck outside window, turned on TV

Sara Smith Macintosh -- New to the group and a lawyer. She is a member of
the Manzanita Business

Alliance -- She heard about the pending tsunami at 5am - then heard sirens
-- She lives 1 1/2 block

from the ocean -- was not prepared - There was a question among the
neighbors -- to take the car

or no? Answer: The earth did not shake here, we can take our cars.

Kay Covert -- Windermere Manzanita -- Also new and a member of the Srategic
Business Alliance. -

- “I am here to learn.” -- She is also a member of the emergency volunteer
corps -

Stephanie A - Has roots from Manzanita and went through her first tsunami
warning in Manzanita --

When she finally did leave she parked up on the hwy -- Now she doesn’t have
a phone at home --

Does have TV, but not online -- son in Hawaii -- “Everybody in the family
called him first then me.

There were 23 messages on my phone when I got to work.” -- Her next
notification was at 7am when

the sirens sounded meaning that she had 15 minutes to leave. - “I never did
hear an all clear.” -- She

went to Camp 18 and had a nice breakfast and came back at about 2pm. “The
town was filled.” --

This was a learning lesson.

Megan-- Indicates she didn’t know about it until 6:30 when she woke up -

Half of the town on top of

my hill.” -- She also recommended we check out the following website:
weatherbug.com.

Carol H -- Indicated she was awakened by a staff member who sleeps with a
scanner -- They then

marshalled their people to get the word out to let other people know -- “We
notified our employees -

- our team worked well together -- Lee Ann called about 1:45.”

Linda D -- At 11:45pm she got a NOAA advisory -- “Then about 1 or so it went
off again and they

upgraded it to a warning.” -- She recommends the radios, as “You know
exactly what is happening,

when.” -- She lives in Warrenton so she just stayed home.

Carmen -- Was awakened by her daughter at 11:45pm. -- “She told me about the
warning. I turned

on the TV and she begged me to come to Portland. I packed up my car and left
-- it was eerie. When

I got to the junction, I got a reverse 911 call on my cell I was very
surprised because I thought I was

one of the few -- looked in my rear view mirror and it was like summer with
a long line of people

heading to Portland: A constant speed. On 26 there were clusters of cars and
2 accidents. Camp 18

was packed -- I made it to Portland -- came back home on Friday -- 7pm.” She
continued with the

fact that there was some damage even to South America, south of Lima. -- She
continued, “At 5:30

Aaron Meyer called me. He was supposed to have assemblies at the schools in
the morning and then

the evening and wanted to know what to do. Since the schools are closed we
cancelled it. Yet she

received many calls from people asking about the 7pm concert. -- “There
were a lot of people

interested in it.” -- They are now in the process of coordinating with the
school to reschedule --

now towards the end of May for the assembly for the schools. -- She
indicated that there had been

no formal communication about the cancellation for those who might have
tried to attend.

Michael -- He has a mother and sister in Florence -- “My sister freaked
out.” -- His opinion was

that if it wipes out Hawaii then he was going to worry. He went to the
office and then decided to go

up to Neakahnie Mountain. He began taking pics of the coastline every 15
minutes, -- “Then it

became a normal day.”

Patti - Was contacted by her boss in Portland -- “Her husband was called
in.” -- Patti “..spent the

time with Eric our emergency coordinator getting our best info from the TV.”
-- She felt that the City

of Seaside had it more together -- Later they evacuated the lower floor of
the hospital just to be safe.

Lesle - Was aware of the crisis as soon as it came on the TV. Had already
packed the car by the time

her son called at about 1:30am urging her to evacuate. She called her
ex-husband Jack who then

indicated he had been called out as a CERT volunteer, so she went up
Broadway where she knows

several friends. She stayed with one friend watching the news until about
9am then went home.

Kathy -- “My first reaction was to watch the TV, then call my tenants in
town: they were up. Then I

called my staff to make sure they were safe and prepared: I called in the
order they live from the

beach. I woke up some of them and then got a call back with thank you for
the warning. Then the fire

department went by announcing that we needed to go to higher ground. Okay.
My worry is that there

was a lot of emphasis put on 7 when the news was saying that would be just
the first of many waves.

When 7:30 didn’t happen, people started to drive off right away. They seemed
to be unaware that as

time goes on the waves could get bigger. After 7:30 the cars began moving
again and yet there was

no all clear. It didn’t seem like people were expecting that type of thing
either.”

Kari -- Her oldest son called 11:30 pm. “I stayed up all night to watch the
tragedy. At 5:30 I went up

to the north entrance and sat in my car.”

Patrick -- “I was awakened by Wendy Higgins. First we made sure the gasoline
at RV resort was

opened so we could take care of community members leaving town.

-- Then we determined how to best deliver the message to our hotel guests.”
Wendy had prepared

bagels and snacks for the guests at their hotel and ended up helping

those at the Stephanie Inn as well. After ensuring his staff and guests were
taken care of, he and his

family “hung out” on high ground the majority of the day -- “We had about
10 people check out

because of the warning and perhaps another dozen cancel.” -- He then
related a story about a flood

insurance policy which had expired March 9. He was told by his agent that
they were covered, but a

question still remains about the gap between policy expiration and payment
of the new invoice.

Gary -- “I was preparing for our Savor Cannon Beach event on Thursday,
driving through flooded

highway thinking, can this get any worse? We had a great event on Thursday,
the wine throw down,

then I went home and watched the news. I thought, there may be something.
Hearing that what

happens in Hawaii would be the first sign, I dozed off. At 3am there was a
siren or Jackson pulling at

my arm because of the siren. I got up and just monitored things -- social
media -- We would do

what we could do with social media -- At about 6 we went up to Haystack
Heights. -- If you watched

the news -- I would have thought it was time to call FEMA -- They were on
the extreme side -- What

they were doing on social media -- They were saying the tide has receded in
Cannon Beach which

means a tsunami is building. I got on and sent a message -- “Hey KATU news:
The tide has receded

and exposed a giant rock in the form of a haystack.” -- We came back down at
11:30 to set up for

our next event -- we missed only one event --

Brian -- “We had 6-8 houses in. It is a bit more complicated to notify our
guests because they are

not all one property.” -- He received a call at 1:30 from Linda who is on
the fire board, then they

started calling guests and calling staff. “We all stayed home and watched
the news. Then we went out

later and made physical contact with the guests we had not been able to
reach earlier. All of our

guests stayed and we had 10 check ins that day and they all came. -- He
continued to say they had

warned the pending arrivals of the situation and that they have had a plan
in place for about 5 years.

“We will review that this week and make changes.” - He reminded us that the
reverse 911 calls are a

courtesy. It is an automated system that keeps going until it it answered.

John B -- Stated that his comparison is from Kansas and tornado warnings.
They have three stages:

advisories and watches and warnings. “In Kansas the sirens blow and that is
the time to start visiting

with your neighbors about what is about to occur. We went to Brian and
Barb’s to watch -- impending

clarity or doom depending on which media you watch.”

Bob Neroni -- “If this is as big as it was in Japan what do we do? They keep
reassessing what is the

safe area to go -- where do we go -- we will be surrounded by water.”

Carol -- “In Japan the wave ran 6 miles inland.”

Recap of savor Cannon Beach by Gary -- “We hedged our bets by going to
sponsors who had bought

advanced tickets -- a hedge against inclimate weather -- helping the
children’s center -- 100

tickets were sold in advance -- Of 40 tickets sold -- 38 showed up on
Thursday night and the other

2 on Friday. I didn’t see those people. I don’t know that anybody left. So
events went off without a

hitch - the crowds were good for all events -- it is possible especially the
saturday event could have

been better attended --

Bob N -- “It felt like it was 100 people less this year.”

Gary -- “Not all of the tickets were redeemed for the wine walk. The good
news is they sold 300+

tickets -- we sold 100 thanks to the sponsor -- the children’s center did
make their goal -- my goal

was higher than that - we may have had closer to 500 without all of the
excitement.

Patrick -- “The events seemed to be better organized and publicized this
year.”

Gary -- “The Children’s Center made their money....it is kind of a miracle.
We will be writing them a

check ourselves for $2,500 -- more monies to come in -- I think their goal
was $10,000 and I think

they made it.”

Carmen -- “We had cancelled the olive oil tasting on Friday. On
Saturday I had a tea and had people

there and did the olive oil tasting. I did walk through town -- l noticed
there were fewer people than

last year.”

Bob -- “Salt was at 11 and we tested over 80 people.”

Kathy -- “From a retail perspective, the event didn’t help sales but the
atmosphere and the people

around were amazing. The sun coming out helped - Thanks Gary -- in general
atmosphere and

mood of people -- feedback -- they were in a good mood and taking in things
and talking about

coming back -- planning other things -- for them to have never been here and
plan to come back, I

thought was really good.”

Gary -- “In the past it ha been largely a local event, but we wanted to make
it a destination. 80% of

tickets sold were from out of town so I know we made some gains in that
area. One pereson said ‘It

was really fun and we got to go to a lot of places we hadn’t been before.’
Even some of the locals said

they went in places they hadn’t been in years.”

Bob -- “An overwhelming sigh of relief. Please make this happen again. We
had tons of messages

asking about not canceling, mostly locals -- It was busy -- from a shopping
standpoint,”

Sarah -- “I attended the event from Manzanita as a tourist. We came up with
another couple. Most of

the Manzanita businesses did not know about it. We enjoyed the event. We
went to only the spots

that had wine tasting -- 2-5 went to Newman’s for lunch -- scheduled speaker
did not show but we

had a wonderful lunch. We did shop and everybody wanted to go where there
was wine. At EVOO I

bought salt.”

Patrick - Spring break report -- good bookings but not so far out --
predicated to an extended

forecast.

Carmen -- This spring a bit lower than last year -- but usually we get a lot
of drop ins -- I also feel

we can have some cancellation in expectation of the gas price increase -
that happened last time the

gas prices increased as well and the weather is not helping --

Patti -- some of the hotels are thinking about offering a gas card

Lesle -- Follow up from last week’s comment on SBDC. “The point in my
message was intended to be

that I hope the college will learn from this outpouring of support for Jim
Entler’s SBM program that

the SBDC could also be that important to the community.” In my opinion, the
SBDC needs a strong

consistent director who will stick with the program and have a community
presence. It is my

understanding that the program has recently been awarded additional funding
for staffing and they

are in the process of seeking a new executive director. With hard work and
community support the

SBDC can enjoy the same stellar reputation and the same level of service to
businesses in the

community that we have come to know from the SBM program/Jim Entler.
