The City is looking for feedback and direction from residents prioritizing projects and money spent for tsunami evacuation. Eight alternatives will be presented by the City. Rich says by the end of this week, info should be available on the City’s website - www.ci.cannon-beach.or.us.

2. GeorgeV: The Children’s Center’s Rock the Beach 10k Run and 5k Run/Walk on Oct 1 will be preceded on Sept 30 by a Pre-Race Party including a drawing contest modeled on the annual coloring contest at Brasserie Montmartre in Portland. 8. MichaelF: The Daily Astorian is doing a feature on Women in Business – the 10 annual. Ad deadline Sept 13th. Publication date Friday Sept 23rd. Michael Ficker 503-325-3211 x242 mficker at dailyastorian.com

9. BrentD: The number of visitors to the Information Center was up for Labor Day weekend and for August. JimK: Icefire had its 4th best August in past 20 years. The Seconds Sale is going great. Opening Day sold 250 pieces of 400 offered. KathyK: La Luna Loca did not have a great weekend. Too much competition from the Big Box stores with their Labor Day Sales events. WendyH: Ocean Lodge was up in June and August but not July. They were full last night and again tonight. GeorgeV: Inn at Village Centre set records in July and August with just 3 vacancy days in July and 3 in August. Because of increased requests for one-night stays, starting in October pricing for Inn at Village Centre is broken down by length of stay. (Find link to Availability/Rates at www.cannon-beach.net/vcinn). George Vetter FotoArt sales have been very slow, although the Cannon Beach Gallery was able to sell 3 of George’s large snow picture at their August show. Galleries are reporting that original work is keeping them alive but print business is on vacation. El Mundo For Men’s Liquidation Sale is progressing. Even with everything marked down, some as much as 70%, sales are not as good as they were 3 to 5 years ago. Money is tight when it comes to retail. BrianO: Business and bookings are up for Cannon Beach Vacation Rentals. TracyMc: Cannon Beach Hotel Lodgings had a big weekend and a decent summer. PiaS: Coaster Theatre had a good weekend, but not a good summer. BobNer: EVOO had a good summer and a busy weekend. LisaS: Mo’s had a very busy weekend, came close to an all time record on Saturday. The summer was just OK.

10. LisaS/JeannieMc: Mo’s annual Firemen’s Benefit dinner is Tues September 13 from 4-10pm. 40 businesses have donated gifts. www.moschowder.com

11. PiaS:The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee - Only 2 more performances! You don't want to miss the musical that's been charming audiences all summer long. "The Bee" plays this Friday, Sept. 9 and closes the following Saturday, Sept 17, both shows with an 8:00 pm curtain. Not only is it fine entertainment but the show will also expand your vocabulary! One sad detail, this is David Carlson's last show before moving to New Mexico. We salute you David Carlson, our truly exceptional pianist who makes one lone instrument sound like a orchestra. www.coastertheatre.com.

12. MikeM: Sunset Empire Transit District (SETD), after getting into deep financial problems and firing the director, is ready to hire a new director. As for our local Shuttle, current funding runs out Sept 30th. During July and August, the Shuttle had about 80 riders per day. The cost to the city for Summer service through Sept is $30K. There will be a City Council Worksession to discuss the Shuttle’s future at City Hall Sept 13th at 530pm

13. MikeM: The current plan to alleviate an estimated 80-90% of the Highway 101 flooding is to remove the berm along the north back of Beerman Creek west of 101. This will allow water to flood into the pastures and wetlands instead of backing up east across 101. See July 18 Gazette article at http://www.cannonbeachgazette.com/news/article_7ab47438-b17c-11e0-90da-001cc4c002e0.html.

14. BrianO/KeithC: The annual Wheels and Waves Car Show/Event, Sept 8-11 has a Poker Run scheduled for Thursday (tomorrow) Sept 8th which includes Cannon Beach. Wheels and Waves participants, who wish, sign up for the Poker Run. Keith estimates around 30 will sign up. Each, on their own, from 9 am to 4pm, make 7 stops and pick up a card at each. The best poker hand wins a gift worth $500. More info at http://www.seasidedowntown.com/sswheelsandwaves. 7. WendyH: We can’t afford to lose business because of a lack of service. Poor and bad customer service in one business reflects on the entire town. Maybe we need a community program to award great service. And a program to train. It is so important now with a weak economy. CarolHun: Great customer service needs to come from the top (owners & managers) down. LindaD: Are we letting those owners and managers whose businesses we hear customer complaints about know?

8. Laurie Oxley - Exec Dir Seaside Downtown Development Assn, Keith Chandler - Chair of the Wheels and Waves Car show/event, Brian Olson – committee member: The annual Wheels and Waves Car Show/Event, Sept 8-11 has a Poker Run scheduled for Thursday Sept 8th which includes Cannon Beach. Various people reported that they heard complaints from participants about it being too large and there being too much waiting. SusanB, while working the beer tent on the beach, said the beer drinkers were a happy lot with no complaints. 17K glasses of beer plus wine were served – to benefit the Seaside Chamber.

10. WendyH: Booking for September are good with most weekends already full. BrianO says CBVR is also seeing good September bookings.

2. JimK: Icfire Glassworks will kick off its 8 day Seconds Sale Sat Sept 3rd. 503-436-2359

3. Mike Stanley: Mike’s Bike Shop has completed 37 years in business in Cannon Beach. www.mikesbike.com. Three-wheel beach bike rental business is going strong. There are also requests for maps of biking trails. We need a more developed trail system. Mike would like to see a plant and animal photo contest. JimK suggested developing a trail in the hills paralleling Hwy 101 to double as a connection route between tsunami evacuation sites.

4. CarolHun: Yesterday’s Farmer’s Market was slower than previous ones. The market offers space for the promotion of local events. People should take advantage of this.

5. The Smithsonian Exhibit at the History Center ends Aug 28th. http://www.earthfromspace.si.edu.

6. PrudenceF: The Cannon Beach Arts Association’s 25 (Silver) Anniversary Celebration is Friday September 16 from 5-9pm at the Midtown gallery – 1064 S Hemlock. Festivities to include a silent auction of silver antiques, jewelry and other items. Plus live music, champagne and designer cakes by local pastry chefs. Wear silver, Bring silver, Win silver! Currently at the Gallery is the 25 Year Invitational Show with artists who have long standing relationships with CBAA. A small photo collection of Cannon Beach people over the past 25 years by George Vetter is available to view at the desk. www.cannonbeacharts.org

7. Pia: Attendance has been down this summer at Coaster Theatre. Last night’s guitar concert had only 36 people even though the hotels were full. GeorgeV suggested getting flyers out a couple days ahead to hotels and businesses. There was discussion about offering discounts through hotels and businesses for last minute ticket purchases. Talk Back Thursdays have gone well at the theater. www.coastertheatre.com

8. JimK: Many of the sales at Icefire Glassworks are repeat customers. People who come back because of a positive experience they had there in the past. StephanieA says she always sends people off with an invitation to come back “Thanks for coming in, please come back again”. Wendy says return guests are a large part of their bookings. They are seeing more last minute reservations and fewer people booking next year as they check out.

9. GeorgeV: Each evening for the past week or two people have been calling Inn at Village Centre looking for a room for the night. This usually after the Chamber has closed for the day. There is no way to know who has vacancy. We need a means to know who has vacancy after the Chamber has closed for the day. Maybe this info could be posted online.

10. WendyH: WOW (Women Only Weekend) organizers have set up a Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Women-Only-Weekend-Cannon-Beach-Oregon/249795218388139. Like the page and post there. Contact Wendy with what you will do for the weekend to have it included on the web and in the flyer. wendy at theoceanlodge.com.

11. GeorgeV: George passed around a couple brochure from 20 years ago which he uncovered recently. One was a tri-fold “Cannon Beach, So Wonderfully Different” and the other a four-fold ”Oregon’s Year Round North Coast, Unhurried, unspoiled and unusual”

12. GeorgeV: After 34 years, George and Paula have decided to offer El Mundo For Men for sale. Signs posted at the store say “Business For Sale, Serious inquiries only please to George 503-739-1415”

13. GeorgeV: The El Mundo store is still full, but the selection is thinning. Much of the store is marked down already from 20% up to 70%. On top of that, today a Storewide Sale of an additional 20-50% is being offered. It’s an additional 20% off everything and if $100 of merchandise is brought to the counter, it’s 50% off. Any purchase (after the discounts) of $150 gets to pick from a bin of 12x16 and 12x18 George Vetter giclee prints valued at $85. And to sweeten the deal, taffy made by Bruce’s is given as a reward for each purchase.

14. JohnB: Cannon Beach Chorus Rehearsals begin Sept 12. Be part – http://www.cannonbeachchorus.org.

Discussion Items:

1. Lodging Tax down 1.6% for Qtr

2. Good Days & Bad Days

3. The Experience vs the Product

4. “People got to Eat”

5. Last Minute Bookings

6. Seattle Gift Show

7. Seagull Pride

8. Chamber Committees

9. Next Wednesday Morning Meeting – August 24, 2011, Mo’s, 8am. Bring your own coffee cup. The coffee is courtesy of Mo’s.

1. GeorgeV: At yesterday’s Chamber Board Meeting, Rich Mays, city manager reported that Cannon Beach Lodging Tax revenues were down 1.6% for the qtr ended June 30. That’s the 3rd straight qtr of decreases. Someone mentioned that factoring in the discounted room rates, occupancy may have actually been up. Seaside was down 5%.

2. KathyK: Retail has been totally unpredictable – a good day followed by a bad one. There has been parking on Hemlock and in the city lot behind La Luna Loca. JimK says even though the years started out bad, it has been good as of late, but may not be enough to overcome the slow start.

3. JimK/TracyMc: It is the Experience that visitors seem to be seeking rather than Products. Traffic to Ecola State Park and Indian Beach is heavier than ever. Flaggers have been needed regularly to avoid letting people in after parking is full – one car out, one car in. Most purchases at Icefire are souvenirs of the experience of spending time with staff learning/watching how glass is blown. KathyK: There is no way us small retailers can compete on price with the giants, but we can give customer service beyond their ability. WendyH/JimK: Relationship is what needs to be focused and concentrated on. Spend time with people building relationship. Finds ways to differentiate yourself. Owners/Managers need to set the example and lead the customer service charge. It is important to set an “upbeat and happy” mood. GeorgeV: At yesterday’s Chamber Board meeting, Brent Dahl reported that Travel Oregon is using State Lodging Tax dollars with their focus being on culinary and outdoor recreation.

4. JamesS: Mo’s has been doing well. “People got to eat”. Kathy says in past summers she has had to wait in line for coffee and pizza, but not so this summer. Tracy agrees.

5. JimMc: Tolovana Inn saw fewer visitors during June and July with many waiting till the last minute to book. August has been very good so far, but a lot of it is last minute. For August, the expensive rooms have been selling first.

6. WendyH: The Seattle Gift show was last week. It was much smaller than in the past and was very slow.

7. SusanBo: Seagull Pride publishes 4 times a year as in insert in the CB Gazette and Seaside Signal. Sign up now for the Fall issue. Sign up for all 4 to receive a 10% discount. Susan Boac 503-436-2812 GazetteAds at countrymedia.net.

8. WendyH: WOW (Women Only Weekend) organizational meeting is set for Tues (Aug 23) at 5pm at the Ocean Lodge. All are invited to participate – wendy at theoceanlodge.com.

9. GeorgeV: Chamber Committees and Board Liasons for the coming year are Finance – Chamber Treasurer, Marketing – Kristine Gottsch, Membership – Christen Allsop, Events – Tim Krupa, Facilities – Jim McDonald, Management – Tim Krupa, Culinary – Carol Hungerford,

 1. WendyH: 11 people were at the meeting here yesterday to further discuss Cannon Beach’s participation in a North Oregon Coast Partnership. Jon Rahl (Director of Tourism Marketing, Seaside Visitors Bureau, City of Seaside JRahl at CityofSeaside.us) was back, this time with Skip Hauke and ReginaM from the Astoria/Warrenton Chamber. Valerie Ryan expressed her opposition to spending money on “branding” the “North Oregon Coast”. Too much time and money gets “wasted” in this exercise. George suggested that the uniqueness of each town be emphasized. George also suggested that the partnership would benefit Astoria/Warrenton more than Seaside and Seaside more than Cannon Beach since the towns vary considerable in size, resources and potential benefits. Jon explained that the deadline to get an application into Travel Oregon for state motel tax money is Aug 22. In answer to Brent’s question about what would happen if Cannon Beach does not join in, Jon said that Seaside and Astoria/Warrenton would go ahead on their own. Brent expressed concern with the timing of this partnership, siting the lack of funds and the short time he has been on the job along with the projects he already has on his plate.

2. Mark See Public Works Director (503)436-8066 and Public Works Foreman, Cruz Flores (503)436-8068 announced an upcoming project replacing the 8”water main on Spruce Street with 12”. The project will take place in the fall. There will be no water disruption, only torn up streets. To minimize disruption, the city has chosen to serve as the general contractor. Work will progress about 100’ at a time so large sections will not be impacted at once. The work cannot be done in the wet season. Some work will be done on Second St between Spruce and Hemlock. Since the Spruce St pavement still has some years left in it, patching will be used rather than repaving. Sheets were passed announcing upcoming information meetings, but later in the day Mark said that the project was put on hold and the meetings would not take place.

3. GeorgeV: When Hemlock was torn up a few years back, the opportunity was seized to bury utilities thus eliminating power poles on the west side of Hemlock. Mark says it is kind of late to incorporate this, but a larger obstacle is money. It would be expensive. Anybody got a source of funds for this?

4. WendyH: City Council is looking at what will happen to the Shuttle after Labor Day. They previously approved funding through Labor Day. There is no money in the budget for it. Kathy says money set aside in the budget for other items could be shifted to cover this important service. A Regional Transit Worksession is set for Aug 18 from 9am-12pm at the Seaside Library to look at connecting transit all along the coast.

5. JohnB: The George Fox Univ Choral Conductors Workshop that was held in town last week should be getting a bigger welcome and more support from our community. We could welcome them with gift bags like we do for the cruise ships.

6. RobinR: The deadline for applications for Tourism and Arts Commission funds is Sept 1.

7. Next Wednesday Morning Meeting – Aug 17, 2011, Mo’s, 8am. Bring your own coffee cup. The coffee is courtesy of Mo’s.

9. Much of today’s meeting was taken up by discussion of a joint effort by Astoria, Seaside and Cannon Beach to promote the “North Oregon Coast” Jon Rahl (Director of Tourism Marketing, Seaside Visitors Bureau, City of Seaside JRahl at CityofSeaside.us) explained that a total of $10,000 ($3333 each) is being sought to get things rolling. Astoria and Seaside are already committed. The group will go after an additional $10,000 from Travel Oregon (State Motel Tax $). A website, social media and TV ads are part of the tentative marketing plan. The Southern Oregon Coast has already done a similar thing. A committee with reps from our three communities would be formed. KGW is a potential developer of a plan. Nothing is likely to reach potential visitors till Spring 2012. Marketing would be for off-season.

SueM: Cannon Beach TAC $ could be sought to bolster his effort, but a local 501 C 3 or 6 organization would have to make the ask. The Chamber and the Gallery Group were mentioned as options.

GeorgeV: The site for the Southern Oregon Coast is very well done and a Northern Oregon Coast site should be even better. As a Cannon Beach business person, George would like to see Seattle and BC, Canada as the target markets rather than Portland and Oregon.

BrentD: Would this be a break with OCVA? Since Motel Tax dollars are already going to OCVA and they have developed a website and brand, are we not creating another level of bureaucracy?

SueM: As a OCVA board member, Sue does not feel that this effort would take away from OCVA.

JonR: Because of rules set by Travel Oregon, OCVA cannot use state $ to target just one specific market.

Lisa: The idea of TV ads for Cannon Beach and the North Oregon Coast seems like a good one.

Russ Vandenberg (Seaside Visitor Bureau & Seaside Civic & Convention Center) Marketing the North Oregon Coast as a brand with participation of all three communities has support from his organization.

KristineG: This all sounds good, but we want to be careful to not dilute our existing efforts to the point of nothing being effective.

ValerieR: $3300 is not that much money for Cannon Beach to come up with even in this economy. This is an opportunity to call attention to what the North Oregon Coast specifically has to offer.

BrianO: Newport and Lincoln City are already doing TV ads.

Lisa: It would be nice to see a breakdown of how State and City Motel tax $ are being spent. Brent says the state info is available t http://industry.traveloregon.com/About-Oregon-Tourism-Commission/2013-Draft-Strategic-Plan.aspx. The city can be seen at www.cannon-beach.net/city/Distribution_Totals_FY2010-11.pdf

TracyMc: Working together with Seaside and Astoria can only be good for Cannon Beach.

BrentD: A follow-up meeting should take place right away considering the short time we have to get a preliminary proposal in. Lisa says Mo’s will host the meeting. It will take place Tuesday Aug 9th at 8am.
