1. GeorgeV: I attended the first Sandcastle Committee Meeting last week
and afterward was curios how other events work. A Google search brought up
Hampton Beach New Hampshire. I called John Kane who shared the following.
Their event started in 2000. It takes place on the beach, but not with sand
from the beach but with easy-packing, silt-laden sand hauled in. Masters are
flown in all expenses paid. Many of these masters move from sand to snow
to ice as they sculpt year round. The event has a $70K budget ($15K in purse
money) not from sponsors, but from a cultural tax that was voted in years
ago. Sculptors have several days to sculpt and the sculptures are fenced off
and guarded for a week or more. Once completed, a mixture of Elmers glue and
water are sprayed on. At the end, the sand is hauled away. Join our
Sandcastle committee by coming to the next meeting tomorrow (Thursday) 830am
at the chamber.
2. SueM: Sues boss, the Lands End owner is worried about traffic
getting onto Hemlock from Second Street. She is curious about what people
would think about a 4-way stop there. The idea didnt have support with
those at the meeting, but people suggested the City is who to talk to.
3. StephanieA: The new development at 2nd & Larch by Jim and MaryAnn Oyala
is nearing completion (see photo at
http://www.cannon-beach.net/webcam/gvwebcam_120121_44.jpg). People reported
hearing that it would include, coffee, shoes and workout.
4. BrentD: Travel Oregon CEO, Todd Davidson, has been appointed by the
President to lead the US Travel and Tourism Advisory Board. Good news for
tourism, Oregon and Cannon Beach.
http://blog.traveloregon.com/Industry/executive_operations/federal_tourism_i
nitiative_to.php
5. SueM: Travel Oregon has a meeting scheduled for the coast in Astoria a
the Holiday Inn. February 7, 9am. Interested parties are invited.
http://blog.traveloregon.com/Industry/executive_operations/next_commissiong_
meeting_to_be.php
6. StephanieA: It is hurting business in town that many businesses hours
of operation are inconsistent. GeorgeV: Rather than closing a couple days a
week, George Vetter FotoArt is open 7 days, but limited hours - 12pm to 4pm
daily. Lodging people are saying it is hard to know where to send people to
eat with so many restuarants closed on unpredictable days. It would be
helpful if there were a place to go to see who is open.
7. StephanieA: Fisherman, Poet and Environmental Activist Dave Densmore
will be reading poetry from his latest book at the History Center this
Saturday Jan 28 at 630pm www.cbhistory.org.
8. BrentD: Planning for 25th Annual SWAF (Nov 2-4) is underway. More
volunteers are needed. Especially someone to head up the music schedule.
Next meeting is March 8th 830am at Chamber. Contact brent at cannonbeach.org.
see http://www.cannonbeach.org/events/eventdetail.aspx?EventID=381
9. GeorgeV: As per KathyK, attend the Rider Incentive Sounding Board
meeting for the NW Connector Bus in Astoria Feb 2nd 1230pm - 130pm. This is
the bus that is connecting the five counties. This meeting is to gather info
from various sources - employers, visitor services, City officials, etc.
10. JeneeP: Homeless Connect - The weather and transportation (fewer busses
running this year compared to last year) I believe severely affected the
turnout. We had about 150 people at the event a lot less than expected
but you all did a wonderful job serving those attending. Again, thank you..
11. GeorgeV: The Cannon Beach Yoga Festival is Mar 2-4. Contact
info at cannonbeachyogafestival.com to have your event/activity/discount

Yoga Arts (above White Bird). Christen invites you to come on up!

Public Radio in Seattle as a sponsor of the Rick Steves Travel Program.
Initially the Cannon Beach Yoga Festival will be mentioned. Spring Unveiling
will follow.
14. BobNer: EVOO has opening for dinner on Thursday but is filled for the
rest of the weekend. www.evoo.biz.
15. JohnB: There is still time to add your voice to the Cannon Beach Chorus.
Three more people and they reach 50. www.cannonbeachchorus.org.
16. TracyA: Closing Sale at Lush Wine Bar. Everything must go. This Saturday

1. GeorgeV: At yesterdays Chamber Board meeting: Chamber is refinancing
$88K building loan to take advantage of lower interest rate. And, paying off
the credit line which was set up for building maintenance and repair. Hall
Rental is under discussion. The overhead for the Community Hall/Room is paid
for by the Chamber. No City funds assist. Who should get free use of the
hall and who should not? One idea was for the Chamber to apply for a
community grant to pay for those who use it free.
2. BrianO: Plans are underway for a Thursday in late Sept for a joint
Auction Fundraiser between the Chamber and Providence Hospital. The Chamber
would use funds for paying down the Building loan and Providence would use
funds for paying for recent improvements to its Cannon Beach Clinic.
3. DebbieN: Plans for Sandcastle 2012 get underway tomorrow (Thursday Jan
19) at 830am at the Chamber. If you wish to be part of the committee, come
to this meeting. Expanding the event to more days is intended. GeorgeV: Can
we build a sandcastle downtown as has been suggested at previous WMMs? Can
we preserve the sculptures through Sunday?
4. StephanieA: Several members of the Cannon Beach Gallery Group have
volunteered to work with the SWAF committee for the 2012 event Nov 2-4.
5. DaleS: Its time to refurbish and preserve our historic cannon. Texas
A&M has done so with the two cannons found in Arch Cape in 2008. It will
take 12-18 months and cost approx $39K. $11K has been raised. Fundraising is
in progress for the remainder.
6. DebbieN: Basketcase is adding espresso, snacks, treats and deli items
to its Ecola Square store. With the closing of Inspired Café at Dragonfire
Gallery, Debbie sees demand for food at Ecola Square. Look for the changes
soon after Valentines Day.
7. TracyA: Lush Wine Bar is having a Parting Party Friday night and is
liquidating equipment, fixtures, etc. incliding www.lushwinebar.com
<http://www.lushwinebar.com/>
8. GeorgeV: In my 35 years of retail in Cannon Beach, this is the first
time a recession has come to roost here. Other recessions have come and
gone, but somehow Cannon Beach had been spared. Not this time. Not since the
70s has prime retail space gone empty. This is a national problem, not a
local one. We have to get people in government who understand business and
economics to lay the groundwork for recovery. It seems obvious at this point
that the government is not going to spend us out of this one. Its easy to
spend freely and create new programs when the money if flowing. Its another
thing to cut back when the flow stops. Its time we get state and national
politicians to wake up and smell the coffee. Or replace them with those who
already do.
9. BrentD: By popular demand, the weekly email Events piece is coming back.
Look for it in you inbox on Thursdays.
10. TracyA: The Cannon Beach Yoga Festival is Mar 2-4. Contact
info at cannonbeachyogafestival.com to have your event/activity/discount
included on the website, Facebook & Twitter. www.cannonbeachyogafestival.com
<http://www.cannonbeachyogafestival.com/> .
11. GeorgeV: Senator Jeff Merkley and his staff were in Cannon Beach at the
Chamber for a Town Hall Meeting last Thursday. The room was filled with
nearly 100 people from Astoria to Manzanita. Mayor Mike Morgan welcomed the
crowd and introduced the Senator as the shorter of our two Senators, but
together they are the tallest delegation of Senators in the country. For my
slideshow of images from the event, see
www.cannon-beach.net/events/MerkleyTownHall2012
12. AlexK: Mos is hiring. If you know someone who lost their job at Doogers
or elsewhere, send them to Mos. Alex is waiting
13. GeorgeV: At the end of WMMs, we are spending time each week to further
expand our understanding and reach with social networking. Join us next week

1. StephanieA: The Chamber Music Concert at Coaster Theatre was enjoyed
by the 60 some people who purchased tickets.
2. StephanieA: The jazz concert at the History Center by John Stowell was
great and attended by 23 people.
3. PatF: 54 Cannon Beach properties sold in 2011 about 1/3 of what sold
before the downturn. 91 properties are currently on the market more than 3
times the number before the downturn. 10 $million plus homes are on the
market now. 5 have sold in the past year. Numbers for Cannon Beach are
better than the rest of Oregon.
4. PatF: Property taxes are paid on assessed values. Assessed values
typically are below market values and are increased annually by 3% (legal
limit). Anyone thinking that their assessed value is more than market value
can petition the County for a reduced assessed value. Robin says in this
economy market values are only valid if backed up by sales in past 3 months.
5. RichM: Last nights worksession by City Councilors was attended by many
parents and citizens wanting to keep our school in Cannon Beach. The task
force created in 1995 could not find a suitable location out of the tsunami
zone. The School Board wants to consolidate all district schools in one
Seaside facility. The School Board has said that if Cannon Beach builds a
school, they will use it. JohnB suggested a multi-purpose Cannon Beach
facility be built to serve Emergency/Art/Education/City Hall purposes. Rich
says to finance a school it would be best to have the costs known before
going to the voters. This could take up to year. Even without knowing the
costs in advance, it wouldnt make sense to put it on the ballot in
November. The next local meeting will be at Cannon Beach Elementary Jan 30th
at 6pm. In the meantime, the School Board meets the third Thursday - January
19th at 6pm in Seaside.
6. Judi Mahoney Healthy Kids Outreach & Enrollment Worker 503-358-2333

some good buys out there.
2. WendyH: At last nights City Council meeting, it was decided to
discuss the resolution to recommend closure of Cannon Beach Elementary at a

5. WendyH and BrianO: Reservation are up for Spring and Summer. They are
coming earlier than last year. December was up also.
6. KathyK: Retail has been so-so. More needs to be done prior to Christmas
next year to bring people to town for shopping. The unique gift buying
experience of Cannon Beach needs to be promoted early. Bus tours like those
to Leavenworth could be looked into. The town needs to pull together and
create a draw with an appealing ambiance of small town Christmas shopping.
7. KeithC: For the second year, Seaside has encouraged local shopping by

is entered into a drawing for prizes. Each $40 earns another card and
another chance. This year there were 1300 entry cards. Up from last year.

4. RobinR: There were 6 sales of a million dollars or more in Clatsop
County during 2001. Not a great number, but something. With prices down,
this would be a good time to apply for a reduction in assessed value with
the County.
5. TerriL: Wayfarer Restaurant features Happy Hour daily from 3 to 5pm with
both food and drink specials. The restaurant will be closed Jan3-5 for
winter cleaning and maintenance. www.wayfarer-restauant.com

6. BrentD: Senator Jeff Merkley will be here for a town hall meeting at
the Chamber on Jan 12 from 4-6pm. The bi-weekly Marketing Committee meeting
is right after this meeting at the Chamber. Bids are being sought to upgrade
the server and network at the Chamber. LisaS: www.quill.com

equipment and found their prices the best. Get you login to the Member's
section of the new Chamber website now from brent at cannonbeach.org. There is
a position on the Chamber Board open.
7. BrentD: Visitors from far and wide are in town now and have been for
the past week. The Visitor's Center is seeing people from around the country
and world.
8. BrentD: The 2012 Cannon Beach Magazine will be out in a couple months.
There are enough mags remaining right now to suggest we need to push these
out the doors before they end up at our recycle center. Put them in bags
with purchases. Encourage visitors to pick them up - take them home. If you
or anyone you know is headed off somewhere and can take some mags, contact
brent at cannonbeach.org.
9. GeorgeV: The Chamber is paying off an $88k loan on the building. It is
currently being refinanced to lower the interest. Fundraisers are needed to
pay this loan down.
10. BrianO: To the rescue. A joint fundraiser with Seaside Providence
Hospital is in the planning stages for September 2012. It will be an auction
with a 50/50 split. The hospital portion will go toward the Cannon Beach
Walk-in Clinic. It is estimated that the Chamber's portion would be $10k+
11. PhilS: New at today's meeting and on a mission - Arch Cape resident and
family man - Phillip Simmons - retired Marine Corps - employed currently by
Clatsop County Veterans Services - but here today in support of keeping
Cannon Beach School. We need to keep our school to attract quality people to
live and work here. 10% of the districts students are from Arch Cape and
Cannon Beach yet 25% of the funding comes from here. The decision ultimately
rests with the School Board, but if we built a school, would they not choose
to honor our wishes and use it? A petition going around asks that the City
Council appoint a task force to study the potential ways to keep our school.
And that the City delay voting on the draft resolution to recommend closure
of the school. until the task force has had time to investigate and report.
The next School Board Meeting is the third Thursday - January 19th at 6pm.

till the next election in June.. The Board consists of Carol Hungerford
(Pres), Brian Olson (VP), George Vetter (Treas), Lisa Sarish (Secr) Tracy
Abel, Jim McDonald, Christen Allsop, Rich Mays.
9. LisaS: The monthly Business After Hours schedule is open. Contact
chamber at cbor.us if you would like to host an event. It does not have to be
extravagant. Several businesses could join together to host one.
10. GaryH: The 2012 Seaside Visitors Guide is off to the printer leaving
Gary and his staff focused on Cannon Beach Magazine. You may still be able
to coax Gary into letting you place an ad even though the deadline has come
and gone. Gary and staff are now doing all the creative and promotional
materials for the City of Seasides Visitors Bureau.
11. GaryH: Savor Cannon Beach 2012 is building. Festival tickets ($99) are
limited to 100 and have sold out in advance in past years, so tickets to
individual events will only be available at the door if space permits. Up to
400 additional tickets will available for just the Saturday Wine Tour (20+

13. BobNer: EVOO has 6 seats remaining for each of the three days after
Christmas Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. www.evoo.biz
<http://www.evoo.biz/> .
14. GeorgeV: The last 15 minutes of todays meeting was spent on FaceBook
and Twitter. Mos new wireless service is working perfectly. GaryH led off
by reminding everyone of the importance of using social media for more than
just a way to broadcast your messages.Like people who like you and share
and comment their postings. Think of it as a network where everyone is
helping everyone else. Go to the pages of people who like you and look at
the list of people who like them. Like those that you like. When you
like a post, your like is not shared, only when you share a post is it
shared. In order for social media to do us the most good, we need to spread
our messages out over time and not all at once. For example, Gary posted
about Savor Cannon Beach last week and for a short time it was shared
everywhere, but then like a flash in the pan, it was gone. To get more
exposure, we need to schedule out posts and likes and shares and
comments so we keep the info in the current flow. This is something we can
coordinate at our WMM sessions. Do come next week with your laptops and plan
to advance your knowledge and understanding of social media. And your
business!!

2. JohnB: Cannon Beach Chorus concert at the Festival of Trees in
Seaside was a great success.
3. BrianO: Business after Hours by Cannon Beach Vacations Rentals was a
big hit 70-80 people stopped by for food drink and Holiday cheer.
4. BobNer: The 2nd Annual Coastal Harvest of Giving benefit for the
Clatsop County Food Bank raised $45K. .
5. LisaS: As of later today, Mos will have wireless Internet. Bring your
laptops next week for some social media posting and sharing
6. BobNer: There are just six seat remaining for Christmas Dinner at EVOO.
503-436-8555 info at evoo.biz.
7. WendyH: There was heated discussion last night at City Hall regarding
the potential closure of Cannon Beach Elementary. It is estimated that the
old structures and awnings would not stand in an earthquake of the magnitude
expected. Even if it did, the short legs of the young children could not
carry them to safety in time to escape an ensuing tsunami. The council feels
obligated in light of the warnings being sounded by scientists to recommend
to the School District closure of the school. Seaside could currently
accommodate the students. The council will consider the resolution at its
Jan 3 meeting.
8. GeorgeV: A new face can be seen at the Chamber on Tues and Thur pms
Chris Mullen a CCC accounting student is doing his internship with Brent
at the Chamber.
9. GeorgeV: Cannon Beach is lit up for the season. For a slideshow to share
with your clients and friends find the link at www.cannon-beach.net
<http://www.cannon-beach.net/> . If youre out after dark, drive by the
Stephanie Inn. Awesome! An image of it posted on
www.facebook.com/cannonbeachnet four days ago has already garnered 42 likes,
22 shares and 15 comments. Chime in. Spread the word.
10. RobS: Heres a new idea as a local alternative to Living Social and
Groupon Example: Offer a room at a hotel for $100 with $100 worth of
shopping/dining vouchers. The hotel would receive $50 of the $100 and each
business whose voucher was used would receive 50% of its value. This is not
a way to make money, but is a way to bring in new business that would
hopefully become regular customers. Rob would also use theidea to
subscriptions to his Oregon Coast Magazine. Wendy and some others said that
people using these kind of promotions dont come back except for another
promotion of similar nature. Tracy said that this has worked for CB Hotel
Lodgings.
11. RobertK: After a year of having CB Treasure Co here, it has become
apparent that the Portland weather people often mistakenly report bad
weather for the coast. Can we all begin to post and tweet what the weather
really is? Send people to the live web cam for Channel 6 located at
Tolovana Inn -
http://weather.weatherbug.com/OR/Cannon%20Beach-weather/weather-cams/local-c
ams.html
12. GeorgeV: Several years ago, after considerable research and observation
by various people it was concluded that the tides that correspond most
closely with Cannon Beach are those measured by NOAA at the North Jetty of
the Columbia River. Because of the many factors that influence tides from
one location to another, they cannot be predicted by interpolating. NOAA
only predicts tides where they measure them. They do not measure them in
Cannon Beach. The North Jetty of the Columbia River are the tides published
in the Cannon Beach Magazine, the Chamber website and on
www.Cannon-Beach.net <http://www.cannon-beach.net/> .
13. JerryM: The Wayfarer Restaurant will be open for Christmas Dinner. Make
reservations now 503-436-1108. Other restaurants to be open are the Pig and
Morriss
14. GeorgeV: There has been considerable attention paid to campaigns to
Shop Local. If these campaigns were 100% effective, most of us would be
out of business. There arent enough residents to support all of us. What we
should be campaigning for is to Shop Small. Wal-Mart, Kmart, Costco,
Target, etc, etc, etc have succeeded at the expense of millions of small
retailers. Put some signs up in your store that encourage people to Shop
Small

Ideally, the 2011 magazines are gone up just as the new ones arrive. Pick up
a stack for your business at the Chamber and get them into the hands of
visitors so they dont end up at the Cannon Beach Recycle Depot.
13. WendyH: The quarter ending Sept 30th saw a 4% increase in Lodging tax.
Some of this increase is because it was just a year ago that the tax was
increased by 1% and rooms that were booked prior to the effective date were
exempt from the increase.
