1. GeorgeV: Over 71% of the the City's General Fund is now coming from the
Lodging Tax. The City's 8% lodging tax is to be collected and paid
quarterly along with a reporting form. A growing amount of bookings and
payments are going directly to intermediaries such as AirBnB, VRBO,
HomeAway, TripAdvisor, Expedia, etc. These companies are to collect the tax
and see that it gets to the City. This is not always happening. These
intermediaries are often faceless without a person to talk to or an email
contact of authority. The City is looking for ways to insure that all
lodging taxes are collected and paid.

2. GeorgeV: The City's Public Works Foreman Cruz Flores has retired after
38 years with the City. He has been replaced by Karen La Bonte who people
may know from Cannon Beach Design Co which she and Darwin Turner share.

3. KevanR: Portland based Red & Co has been chosen by the Chamber to head
up the project of the branding of Cannon Beach. Branding involves the
graphics, fonts, colors, words, etc used in anything that goes out to the
public - ads, internet, stationery, business cards, newsletters, etc.

4. CourtC: Save the date! The 30th Stormy Weather Arts Festival is Nov 3-5.
It will include a Friday night Arts Benefit at the Chamber Community Hall
at 730pm

5. MikeB: Thanks to the Gazette and writer Nancy McCarthy for the great
feature on Imprint Gallery.

6. CourtC: Cannon Beach has been very fortunate in receiving accolades.
Recent ones have come from Good Housekeeping, The Active Times, Sunset
Magazine, TheCultureTrip.com <http://theculturetrip.com/>, Country Living,
Travel & Leisure, WideOpenSpaces.com <http://wideopenspaces.com/>, National
Geographic, Oregonian and others. These reflect the hard work our community
puts into keeping our town beautiful, clean and giving great service to our
visitors.

10. CourtC/GeorgeV: Tom Drumheller has been a business leader and all-round
great guy in Cannon Beach since his early days here with Steve Martin
Management. In 2001, with partner Patrick Nofield, he developed The Ocean
Lodge and together they formed Escape Lodging. Then came Inn at Cannon
Beach along with management of Van Buren Lighthouse Inn and Cannon Beach RV
Resort. Tom has partnered with others to create Tom's Fish and Chips in
Cannon Beach and in Seaside. He just completed The Lodge at Columbia Point,
the newest Richland Hotel in the heart of Washington State - 82 guest rooms
for business and leisure travel. He was named to WSU Hospitality Program
Hall of Fame. Tom has served on the City's Tourism and Arts Committee since
it's inception about 5 years ago. Sadly, Tom has been diagnosed with
terminal cancer and is at home under hospice care. He is not receiving

Community Leaders. We visited two active harvesting sites - open on
Weyerhaeuser land and the other on Lewis and Clark land managed by

life of the north Oregon coast through the performance of live music. The

year - one in December and one in May. Join the Chorus. Members are from
Ocean Park, Astoria, Warrenton, Hammond, Gearhart, Seaside, Cannon Beach,

offered some relief. Even here the smoke reached for a couple days.

set up with free glasses and $1 bottles of water. The drive back to Hebo
was somewhat slow, but once on Hwy 101, traffic was backed up and moved at

a half. From Tillamook to Rockaway, it was better, but still slow. JeremyC:

9. BrennaV/GeorgeV: The city has received 3 applications for cannabis
stores in Cannon Beach. One for the old market building in Tolovana and two
for downtown. Before a city license is approved, applicants must comply
with all state regulations. All three are in this process now. The current
city ordinance does not allow a cannabis store in the same building as a
residence. This was part of a template that was used when adopting
the ordinance. Two tenants above one of the proposed stores have approached
the city to change that clause as their landlord has told them that he will
give preference to the store. Voters approved the sale of cannabis in
Cannon Beach in a recent referendum.

10. CourtC: The Chamber is working with the City and State to get a
temporary sign at the south entrance off 101 after the old sign rotted and
blew down.

11. CourtC: The Chamber's August Breakfast Meeting will feature U.S.
Representative Suzanne Bonamici and State Representative Deborah Boone.
August 8 at 745am at a location yet to be determined.

12. CourtC: The Chamber building loan has been paid off. The original loan
was paid off years ago, but major repairs required a new loan about 10
years ago which has been being paid down and now has been paid off.

13. CourtC: The Chamber Board met yesterday for the first meeting of a new
fiscal year. They welcomed newly elected board members. The 9 board members
are Greg Swedenborg - President, John Newman - VP, Gayle Andrus - Treas,
Sheri Russell - Secr, Robin Risley, Debbie Nelson, Lisa Spivey, Kevan
Ridgway and Brian Olson. Board positions are for 3 years with 3 expiring
each year.

14. CourtC: Ryan Snyder of Cannon Beach's Martin Hospitality was appointed
by the Governor in 2011 to the Oregon Tourism Commission. He is now chair
of that 9-member commission. They will have their October 3rd meeting in
Cannon Beach. The location is yet to be determined.

5. Also new at today's meeting: Kari Henningsgaard, Communication
Coordinator and Pooka Rice, Outreach Coordinator of The Haystack Rock
Awareness Program (HRAP). The public is invited to a potluck Saturday at
530 pm at City Hall.

6. KariH/PookaR: HRAP Report. Ninety percent of our sea stars (starfish)
have been lost to sea star wasting - a disease that has gone on for several
years. This has also been a very bad year for birds. Only 12 puffins were
counted at Haystack Rock this year compared to 55 last year. And now a
hundred or so Common Murres have died and are on the beach. One speculation
is that the water is warmer this year which drives the food supply deeper
resulting in mal-nutrition and starvation in some birds. On the positive
side, two pairs of oyster catchers have 3 chicks between them and are doing
well.

7. GeorgeV: Always a hot topic in Cannon Beach - Parking - was discussed at
Monday's City Council Meeting. The standing-room-only crowd at City Hall
took turns voicing their opinions on the subject after Brian Davis,
Director of Lancaster Street Lab reported on the study he conducted during
Oregon Spring Break on Friday March 31, and WA Spring Break on Saturday
April 15. His observation was that Hemlock and 2nd Streets filled first and
those cars stayed longer that those on other streets and city lots. He saw
many early parkers on Hemlock Street pull lawn chairs from their cars and
head to the beach. Others appeared to be employees going to work. His
recommendation was for two hour parking on Hemlock and Second Streets. Many
ideas came from the crowd. There was general agreement that employees
should not park on Hemlock or Second, and that the Shuttle should be better
promoted, used and scheduled for employees and visitors. Many people did
not like the idea of more signs. Brian said that painted/marked curbs was a
viable alternative. Many questioned whether Brian's study was valid for
Cannon Beach to which he answered by saying that indeed it was. He said
that study after study in towns of all sizes and locations have shown that
two hours is the ideal time for people to do their shopping - saying that
the return on 3-hour shopping was not nearly as good.

8. GeorgeV: I created another time-lapse video - 1776 hi-res, time-lapse
photos taken every 20 seconds merged into a 3-minute video of the activity
on Hemlock Street in downtown Cannon Beach from 815am to 830pm (except
230p-430p - battery died) on Saturday July 8, 2017. Observe the comings and
goings of people and cars on a busy summer Saturday. View it at
