1. KevanR: Sponsored by Travel Oregon, a North Coast Tourism Summit is Tues
Sept 25 in Garibaldi. The purpose of the summit is to create a shared
vision for tourism along the North Coast. All are invited to help shape the
future of our tourism. More info at http://industry.travelorego
n.com/industry-resources/destination-development/oregon-
tourism-studio-communities/north-coast-destination-management-studio/.
Cannon Beach has contributed $10k to this effort.

2. KevanR: The City contracts the Chamber to market Cannon Beach as per
state statute. Kevan has been chairing the Chamber's Marketing Committee,
but has stepped down and has been replaced by Jenni Tronier of Coaster
Theater. Kevan would like to see more lodging representation on the
committee.

3. GeorgeV via Cindy Beckman re: Ecola Seafoods fire: "On Saturday morning
at 2:45 am we had a small electrical fire that originated in our PA system
[hardwired in when the building was built]. However, the smoke and heat
from the fire became intense and damaged the entire interior of the store
including the upstairs. The restaurant on the inside has been completely
gutted and we had a fire restoration company come in to clean up the water
and smoke. We are working hard to get reopened as soon as possible.
However, we lost all of our seafood, our restaurant equipment, tables and
chairs, everything. We have hired a general contractor to coordinate the
subs and we are hoping to be re-opened October 1st. We would like to thank
all of the local businesses for your past and continued support. This
October is our 25th year anniversary and we are dedicated to be open in
time to celebrate. Thank you and we hope to see everyone soon". Cindy
Beckman

4. JeneeP A group of 200 people organized by the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints will meet this Saturday at Tolovana Wayside for a special
beach cleanup coordinated by SOLVe and local representative Jenee Pearce.

5. JessicaN: Learn a better way to run your business with the Small
Business Management Program by Clatsop Community College. October 2018 -
June 2019. $695. Designed for business owners (limited to 12), the class
meets every other Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:00 and includes two private
one-hour advising sessions with a professional business coach each month.
Learn from subject matter experts in management, finance, sales and
marketing, customer service, human resources, law, insurance and
technology. Apply by August 31. sbdc at clatsopcc.edu. 503-338-2402

6. GeorgeV: Voters in November will vote for Mayor and two Council
positions. Currently no one is running against incumbent Mayor Sam Steidel.
Three people are currently running for two Council positions: Incumbent
Mike Benefield, Robin Risley and Greg Swedenborg. There is still time for
others to join the race.

7. ChrisO: The Chamber has received funding from the City through the
Tourism and Arts Commission (TAC) for a culinary festival. To avoid any
confusion with Savor Cannon Beach, the festival has been renamed to the
North Coast Culinary Festival and moved to May 10-12. The Chamber is asking
the City for additional funds beyond what was allocated by the TAC. The
Council referred it back to the TAC.

8: GeorgeV et all: There was general agreement that the 1% lodging tax just
passed by the County Commissioners was done without proper involvement of
those affected and should be repealed. The City was not advised or
consulted nor was the lodging industry. This tax puts the jail bond in
jeopardy.

9: AmyM: Please join our clean up crew! August 11th, 9am-12pm and August
18, 9am-12pm. We will be tidying up the landscaping, cleaning the inside
of the school, and accepting toy/school supply donations! Come from 9-12
or anytime between those hours. Please bring your own tools (pruning
shears, trimmers, rakes, brooms, leaf blowers) for outdoor work. All
cleaning supplies are provided, including gloves if needed. Thank you in
advance!

10. AmyM: The American Legion will hold a fundraiser for the Academy in
Seaside on Sept 22. More detail to follow.

1. New at Today's Meeting
2. National Night Out
3. Lights in the park
4. Choral Conductors Workshop free concert
5. Chamber updates
6. CRAVE event
7. Museum Updates
8. The Cannon Beach Academy updates
9. Microplastics in the water

Word of the Day by Professor John Buehler: Improbity: unscrupulous

1. New at today's meeting: Michele Fritzler. Owner of a vacant lot, hoping
to build soon and to join the community.

2. JasonS: National Night Out is Tuesday, August 7 from 5-7pm at the City
Park. This is a kid friendly event and will host free hamburgers, hot
dogs, cake (courtesy of the new owners of the bakery), and drinks. This is
how our local law enforcement gives back to the community. HRAP will be
making a mural, and there will be raffle prizes.

3. JasonS and JeanieM: The Wednesday evening soccer games at the City Park
were discussed. The police department is looking for a lighting option to
light up the park after dark. The soccer team practices in the fall and it
is hard to see. The current light poles are not strong enough to support
larger lights. One possibility is portable lights from Home Depot but that
is not a permanent solution. The soccer teams are raising money to try to
purchase lighting. It was also mentioned that the CB Arts Association is
also raising money for lighting in order to have more concerts in the park.

4. JohnB: Friday culminates the Choral Conductors Workshop in Seaside.
There is a free concert at 7pm at the Elks Lodge in the Formal Room (324
Ave A). There are 100 people in the chorus from across the nation.

5. JimP: The Visitor’s Center has been busy all day long especially with
the good weather. His team is focusing on membership renewals and
recruiting new members, including local citizens to join the Chamber.
Jeremy Clifford is a new board member and Kevan has stepped down. Jenny
Tronier is now the marketing chair at the Chamber. There is a Travel
Oregon Tourism Studio summit in Garibaldi on September 25. This is for
businesses and community members from Astoria to Pacific City.

6. KevanR: CRAVE event (fish, farm, forage) on September 29, on display
will be art made from marine debris (not just plastics)

7. MelodieC: She is working on finding someone to carry on the legacy of
the collection after she can no longer do so in order to carry on the story
of how the museum came to be. This requires hiring an archivist. She will
send links to two videos they produced.

8: AmyM: Please see Brenna’s article regarding test scores- the students
did an awesome job this year. The school day is being extended by 30
minutes in order to provide daily Spanish language instruction (previously
it was 30 minutes per week which is not adequate to learn a new language).
A new playground will be installed in September, thanks to an anonymous
donor. Registration is August 22-23 (check Facebook for times). Come help
with the campus clean up- two options to choose from. Aug. 11 or 18, both
from 9-12 at the school (3781 S. Hemlock St
<https://maps.google.com/?q=3781+S.+Hemlock+St&entry=gmail&source=g>.).
Donations are accepted-please see Facebook for a current wish list.

9: BrennaV: no news is good news. Check out the upcoming article on
microplastics in the waters off the Oregon Coast. The focus has been on
Crescent Beach and Fort Stevens State Park.

1. New at today's meeting: Graham Nystrom, General Manager at KMUM
Community Radio - 89.5 on the dial for Cannon Beach. Graham is looking to
fast track the Cannon Beach Translator project that has been in the works
for some time. Recently, CB Police submitted a grant application to the DHS
to build a radio tower on Radar Rd at the water tank. The grant was not
funded, and so on behalf of City of Cannon Beach public entities, emergency
responders, HAM operators, and the radio station, he is moving forward with
the project by aksing for funding from the Oregon Community Foundation. Has
just $9K of the $36K needed. Letters of support for this project would be
very helpful at this point. This project would not only serve KMUN, but
would serve as the Emergency Communication Site. Contact Graham at

3. GeorgeV: Josh at Surfbird Cafe has been gereriously supplying coffee at
our meetings but has found his schedule and staffing just don't allow him
to continue at this point. Deanna at Cannon Beach Bakery has stepped up
offering to begin this free service starting next week. Thanks Deanna and
thanks Josh.

4. GeorgeV: The WMM distribution list has grown to 300 emails. To give me
an idea of how many people actually read it, please hit replay now. You
don't need to type anything - I'll get the message. BTW, I will miss the

try a trail or two and certainly some golf.

5. ChrisO: The Chamber's June edition of "Directions" hit mail boxes this

and more. Lodging tax dollars will assist the Chamber with the Fat Tire

hamburgers, hot dogs, cake and drinks. To donate prizes, contact Chief
Jason Schermerhorn 503-440-5859 schermerhorn at ci.cannon-beach.or.us.

7. JimP: Clatsop County Commissioners may impose a lodging tax to help pay
for personnel costs at a new jail in Warrenton. Voters in November will
decide on a $20 million bond to turn the former North Coast Youth
Correctional Facility into an expanded jail. County commissioners are
considering a 1 percent lodging tax to help cover personnel costs,
including additional deputies, a nurse and mental health experts.

8. GeorgeV: At last night's Council Work Session, Short Term Rentals were
once again discussed. For a recap, see Brenna's article at

ch-considering-changes-to-14-day-rule.

9. GeorgeV: Also at last night's Work Session, County Health Director
Michael McNickle talked about a County proposal that would affect tobacco
retailers in the County and Cannon Beach by meeting Tobacco 21 State Law.
Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable deaths in the US. An
ordinance requiring a license and fee is being proposed.

10. GeorgeV: 15 non-profit recipients will receive a total of $75,000 in
grants from the City of Cannon Beach in proportions as recommended by the
Parks and Community Services Committee. The largest recipient is to be the
Tolovana Arts Colony receiving $15,607.

11. GeorgeV: Last week's WMM fell on the 4th so was cancelled, but the

show by 7 master plots and some 30 others. The competition began at noon
with final judging at 6pm (late tide this year). At 4pm 320 cars were
counted parked on the beach. In all, 600 cars came and went onto and off
the beach. Photos include Friday's parade in the rain, Saturday's contest
