9. Notes from Last Week

Word of the Day by Prof John Buehler - PAWKY - Shrewd, sly, cunning; often
also characterised by a sarcastic sense of humor.

1. GeorgeV: The RV Park is owned by the City. Escape Lodging is contracted
to manage it. In the recent routine audit, the RV Park shows an asset value
of $3M. The City's fiscal year return was $209K. That is a 7% return.
Should the City sell the RV Park Enterprise and use the proceeds for
affordable housing, emergency preparedness, a new city hall, etc? I pulled
my numbers from the recent audit report which accounted for more than just
net operating income and expense. My point was for the City to look at this
asset as a means to accomplish other goals. I do not doubt that Escape
Lodging is doing an admirable job of management.

2. JimK: The Gallery Group has interviewed 6 people to take over PR after
Bonnie Gilchrist's retirement. Alexis Jackson, from Portland, has been
chosen for the job and a contract is in the works. www.cbgallerygroup.com

3. JimP: www.CannonBeach.ORg goes live today with a brand new website with
special emphasis on visitor user-friendliness. Local businesses are
encouraged to log in to the member section and update their information.
And to give feedback on their experience with the site. It is now time for
fine-tuning.

4. JimK: The Cannon Beach Gallery Group is moving forward with plans for a
new event - Earth 'n Ocean - the weekend of Sept 21, 2019. The event will
coincide with SOLVE's Fall Beach Cleanup and will involve participation
with local non-profits such as the North Coast Land Conservancy, the
Wildlife Center of the Northwest, Friends of Haystack Rock. Cape Falcon
Reserve, Sea Turtles Forever, etc. The Gallery Group has dropped the June
Plein Air and More event. www.cbgallerygroup.com

5. Savor Cannon Beach continues to grow and attract. Plans are underway to
include Restaurant Listings. If you want your restaurant included, contact
Tracy Abel - CannonBeachGirl at gmail.com immediately. Savor Cannon Beach has
added a month-long promotion for the month of March called Savor Dungeness
Crab Month. Marketing materials will include a brochure listing all
participating restaurants and the Oregon Dungeness Crab dishes they will
offer. There is no fee required for restaurants to participate, only a
commitment and a description of the Dungeness Crab items they will offer.
Explorer Media Group has partnered with the Oregon Dungeness Crab
Commission to create and promote this month-long celebration that coincides
with Savor Cannon Beach, March 7-10.

6. GeorgeV: The large and growing number of people choosing to visit and
vacation in Cannon Beach requires expenses of a town much larger than our
1700 citizens. Even with our 8% lodging tax, we still don’t have resources
for Emergency Preparedness, Affordable Housing, a new City Hall, and other
items. We need to find new sources of revenue. One possibility is a food
and beverage tax. Another is paid parking. Both of these were part of
Council Candidate Greg Swedenborg's platform. GregS: Another source would
be an increase of short term rental licenses. Many of these houses are
generating up to $100K a year and paying just $300/yr license fee. A $3000
license fee could be applied.

7. RobinR: The City Council's January Work Session will take place tonight
at 530pm at City Hall. For the agenda and the packet, see
https://www.ci.cannon-beach.or.us/citycouncil/page/city-council-work-sessionspecial-meeting-new-city-hall-police-station
.

8. JimP: Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting of Mi Corazon Mexican Cuisine
tomorrow (Thurs Jan 10) at 545pm across from Ecola Sq at 140 S Hemlock.

9. See last weeks notes by Debbie Nelson below. They came in after
yesterday's reminder. Thanks Debbie.

from all parts of the North Coast; Long Beach, Pacific City, Forest Grove,
Cannon Beach, etc. Circle of Life is the theme this year.

Debbie told of her experience being involved with the Coaster Theater
production of the Wizard of Oz. What a fun experience!

Sleepy Monk is closed for the month of January. However, Debbie’s shop,
Basketcase - Your Cannon Beach Florist, sells ground and whole bean as well
as brews it in her espresso machine. Come on and in and get a cup!

mexican restaurant, Mi Corazon, is opening soon. Different locations.

Debbie let everyone know she just celebrated her 22nd year of being in

Thank you to James (Pizza a Fetta) for the space to meet and to Melinda for
faithfully coming to open it up for us!
