Notes by Hannah of Sea Breeze Court
KyleG: Ecola State Park is finally open!
HannahO: Does anyone have any details about the SOLVE/Cert clean-up this
weekend?
RickH: There’s nothing scheduled for that. As we know, there’s a Facebook
post that went viral but nothing is scheduled at this time.
KathyK: Any way to figure out who did that?
RickH: Could possibly have come out from the HRAP crew. We are looking to
schedule one for every 10 days. The message needs to be to clean up after
yourself.
MaryBethC: People want garbage cans on the beach, but that isn’t a good
solution.
RickH: MaryBethC and I have been working to get back channels together to
coordinate more events.
JimP: In a past meeting, we heard that the shut down hurt the state parks
because a good portion of the funding comes from visitation and from the
lottery. Right now they are hurting for help and are running at half staff.
GeorgeV: Awareness of the general public as to why they shouldn’t litter.
KathyK: Is there a way to change the publicity, can we reframe it?
MaryBethC: The chamber has done a Love it like a Local campaign that has
that information.
JimP: The marketing coming out of the chamber is very minimal other than
social media presence. There have been some inflammatory messages and
articles coming out recently with ideas.
JeanieM: Is there a way we can each adopt a street to pick up litter?
JimP: Pack it in, pack it out
GeorgeV: Take only pictures, leave only footprints
KathyK: ODOT is working on a plan and has a survey out for people to
complete: https://youtu.be/vLOKf7qi1EQ
KenP: The avenue U light back up can sometimes be 8-10 miles long.
JeanieM: I became aware that kids are dropping out of school due to the
COVID. Isn’t there something like a visiting teacher that can keep kids in
school?
MaryBethC: You might call the school district or talk to a board member
about this sort of program.
GeorgeV: Mary Ann Oyala sent me a message about a space available:
Commercial Space Available For Lease, Downtown Cannon Beach. At 2nd &
Larch, space #4. 594 sq.ft. Will be available, September 2020. For
Information call #: 503 436-1311. Surfbird Café space is still available -
contact George 503-739-1415.
JeanieM: If the weather is still good, the band will be playing at 6:00pm
at the bandstand. Pretty good attendance.
GeorgeV: I received a message from the Small Business program new season
starting soon. 2020/2021 small business program starting up.
KenP: The Chocolate Café has been new ownership in the last few months.
Kelly and Paul purchased the business and were employees.
ErikO: How is the census going?
KenP: I’ve had very good success with my efforts. We still aren’t much
more above 50%. I’ll find out more. People are responsive and
appreciative when we are out there.
KathyK: Who should be completing the census for a rental apartment/house?
KenP: A landlord can do that for them.
GeorgeV: Rick, I haven’t heard a status report for COVID-19
RickH: There have been 91 cases, 86 have recovered. No deaths. The county
is no longer testing people that don’t have symptoms or those that just
have had contact. It’s giving people a false positive. We’ve passed out
25,000 masks in Cannon Beach. An exposure is being within 6 feet of
someone for 15 minutes, but we are moving around so frequently that it is
not happening. Everyone has been respecting social distancing and wearing
masks, helping to explain why we haven’t had massive outbreaks. We are
seeing overcrowding, excessive people, garbage, etc. City hall is still
closed to the public, but still open.
KathyK: Seaside has purchased their own electric street signs. Is Cannon
Beach considering something like that?
RickH: Currently a lighted road sign is against city ordinance.
JeanieM: Angora hiking club will have Tom Horning at 8:20am at Hug Point on
Saturday. It’s $10/year to be a part of the club. Call Arlene LaMear to
sign-up (503-791-6201).
KenP: Rick, please pass along to the city how much we appreciate the work
you are doing.

Wednesday Morning Zoom Meeting 12 Aug 2020. 8am
Participants: HannahO, ErikO, GeorgeV, JeneePM, KyleG, GregS, KathyK, KenP,
JeanieM, AnnC, MaryBethC
Number attending: 11
Notes by Hannah of Sea Breeze Court
JeneePM: Is 8:00am too early?
GeorgeV: Van Nordquist was in a fatal motorcycle crash yesterday just south
of town on 101, he was an information specialist with the Chamber of
Commerce and long-time Cannon Beach resident.
GeorgeV: Dave Pastor recently passed as well - heart.
KyleG: The Inn at Cannon Beach is celebrating 20 years. This coming
Saturday is Tom Drumheller's birthday, Escape Lodging will be doing social
media posts.
GregS: TAC met the other day, all current funds were used for relief in
April. Not looking to fund a lot of other things to bring people into town
at this point. As a committee we came up with some ideas and took them to
the city council. Anyone that is requesting funds has to be a non-profit.
TAC not allowing one member to put all funding in one event. Oversee all
transient lodging funding. Currently there are 3 revenue streams from
tourism lodging tax that have to be used under certain conditions. As
those grow, the committee should have some sort of oversight.
GeorgeV: Who is currently on the committee?
GregS: Myself, Julie Walker, Mike Morgan, Greg Bell, Claudia, Steve
Sinkler, Jim Kingwell. Claudia recently resigned her position, so there is
a spot available.
KathyK: There was a school district board meeting last night as well, the
school discussed their plan. I asked if Cannon Beach Academy and Seaside
had their plans set and they didn’t know.
GeorgeV: What is the school status for this year?
KathyK: The school is going online until October. There are two different
tracks, a virtual “feels like” you are in the classroom and the more
homeschool option with weekly check-ins.
HannahO: Do they have any plans for students without computer or internet
access?
KathyK: They are aware that it is an issue and they are working to get
access to those students with computers and internet hotspots.
JeneePM: The Academy is teaching virtually for the first 3 months
KathyK: There is a program that I can help coordinate options to create
physically distanced bike routes to stay active and safe. Traffic Garden
through Safe Routes to School program. It can be done through Sunset
Empire Transit, we’d just need a parking lot to use for it.
JeanieM: What is the purpose of it?
KathyK: Teaching kids how to travel safely on the road, but also for
physical activity. When we get back to school, buses will have lower
capacities for physical distancing, so it will be a good way to show
alternative options.
JeneePM: Kids may not be able to attend school when we get back to in class
learning, because parents aren’t able to get kids to and from school.
GeorgeV: I’ve been hearing that Cannon Beach has been experiencing large
crowds
ErikO: It seems like every day is a Saturday in August. Midtown parking
lot is filled by 10am. Lot of daytrippers parking outside of parking lots.
MaryBethC: Information Center - It’s been lighter traffic, probably people
know Cannon Beach better is coming down so they don’t need to visit the
Chamber for information. Foot traffic is down, phone calls and internet
use is up.
KyleG: Lots of people coming down to picnic on the beach
MaryBethC: At DragonFire gallery we are seeing people come down for a few
days, from Seattle and Portland. I’ve heard a lot of positives from guests
saying they feel comfortable here. Lots of Washington plates.
KenP: There’s a consistent problem with the census, those with second homes
still need to be counted as a zero resident household. My2020census.gov is
a way to complete their census. They won’t send a census to a PO Box, so
you need to do it online for your address.
JeanieM: There’s a 1-800 phone number you can call to complete.
KathyK: It’s super important to complete the census. Lots of things are
funded through census data. Second home owners need to complete it for
their primary residence and additional houses.
MaryBethC: In the past, we’ve set up a computer at the library for folks to
fill out the census. I’ll see if we can set-up a computer at the city or
chamber for people to complete it, this is less likely to be associated to
you.
KenP: It’s not required to answer anything. You don’t have to disclose
information that you don’t want to, just the number of residents at a
home. The data is taken as of April 1st, needs to be completed by the end
of September.
MaryBethC: Hoteliers should remind their staff to complete the census, have
them do it at work, it takes less than 2 minutes. It can all be done in
Spanish.
JeanieM: The Oregon Costa Rica partners has been cancelled for now. They
are trying to do a new thing to keep engaged, if you are interested in
working together, email JeanieMclaughlin139 at gmail.com
MaryBethC: The city is doing a free KN95 mask give away this Thursday from
4-7 at City Hall. All residents are welcome to come and get some masks.
They were given to us through the state via the County.
JeanieM: This Thursday, there will be another band playing at the city
park. Juan Carlos Corona and Marsh will be playing.
KathyK: We’re pretty lucky that the county is distributing masks the way
they are. And the community outreach and representatives have been part of
why the drive to distribute masks has happened. We need to make sure that
all people that need masks have them.
JeanieM: What do we do when we see tourists not wearing masks?
MaryBethC: Many places sell them. At DragonFire, we give them to people
that do not have masks. Face shields are not sufficient.
KenP: Don’t expose the nose! Any hotels and merchants, I still have
several thousand left of disposable surgical. And I deliver.
KathyK: kathy at ridethebus is my contact and I would love to help coordinate
a traffic garden, or school-pooling and walking school buses or bike-trains
to school fun names are part of making it fun to be part of for the kids

Wednesday Morning Zoom Meeting 05 Aug 2020. 8am
Participants: GeorgeV, JeneePM, HannahO, ErikO, BuddieA, KyleG, MicheleF,
MaryBethC, KathyK
Number attending: 9
Notes by Hannah of Sea Breeze Court
KyleG: Hotels are rolling, restaurants are exceeding last year, outdoor
seating helps
GeorgeV: Are you able to get enough employees?
KyleG: Hotels are having a rough time getting staff, the RV resort is
looking for a few people, Seaside hotels still looking for staff
GeorgeV: Are people still getting the extra $600 in unemployment?
KyleG: That stopped on July 25
MicheleF: Where do most of the employees come from?
KyleG: All over, Astoria, Seaside, Manzanita, Tillamook
HannahO: We had our best July ever
MicheleF: We work with a lot of property management companies; we saw a big
drop in April and May and had the best July ever. It may have been pent up
work. People typically move in summer months and people are scheduling
things that were on hold.
KyleG: We’re seeing a lot of people from outside Oregon and usual locals.
HannahO: We have been seeing a ton of folks from Utah, not sure why.
GeorgeV: In Bend we are seeing people from California.
HannahO: We’re seeing the weddings coming back, doesn’t seem to be much
physical distancing.
GeorgeV: I sent the meeting reminder email and all the city emails bounced
back.
JeneePM: Any news from the chamber, Buddie?
BuddieA: Working on the membership drive. Laura and I are holding down the
fort while Jim is on vacation.
GeorgeV: Last time I was in town I had dinner at Mi Corazon who has taken
over Sweet Basil’s to have fast food - Mexican and a margarita bar.
Surfbird space is still available. Contact George at georgevetter.com.
JeneePM: We talked last week about the Red Cross partnering with hotel,
grocery stores, etc. We want to have places to call upon if there is a
family that has been displaced due to fire or other emergency, like a rate
structure set up for emergencies. Call or email Jenee if you want to
partner with Red Cross.
KyleG: We would definitely help at times, we’ve helped in the past when the
Skylark Apartments burned.
GeorgeV: August is the deadline to file for City Council. Has anyone
stepped up?
BuddieA: Not that we’ve heard of, but would like to see good representation
of all businesses.
GeorgeV: An election isn’t really an election if you don’t have anyone
running against you.
HannahO: The Friends of Haystack Rock will be doing Zoom/Facebook Live for
their Lecture Series starting in the fall.
KyleG: How is the virtual Sandcastle contest going?
BuddieA: We’ve had 7 entries so far.
GeorgeV: It seems like there could be more promotion in town.
ErikO: We’ve told guests and they seem really excited about it. but don't
seem to follow up. All the hotels have the flyer posted somewhere.
KyleG: We’ve had a family reach out and ask for money from the Driftwood to
sponsor a beach clean-up.
GeorgeV: Are discarded masks a problem?
HannahO: Yes and I’ve noticed a lot of the plastic from firewood bundles.
GeorgeV: The 4000 sq ft, 5-bdrm, ocean-view, Vetter Family home in Tolovana
at 3823 Pacific is now listed with Alaina at RE/MAX Coastal Advantage
503-440-7676. See https://tour.northcoast.tours/public/vtour/full/1647050#!/

Wednesday Morning Zoom Meeting 29 July 2020. 8am
Participants: GeorgeV, HannahO, JeneePM, SheriR, JeanieM, KathyK, JimP
Number attending: 7
Notes by Hannah of Sea Breeze Court
GeorgeV: What’s going on with waste management?
KathyK: They are having phone issues.
JeanieM: Anyone know about Spectrum? It’s doing some weird things with the
TV.
JeanieM: I’ve been thanking visitors for wearing masks and contributing to
our local economy.
HannahO: We’ve been very busy, but many other hotels seem to be struggling.
JeanieM: Outdoor concert at the City Park, it is 6-8pm, organized by Paul
Dueber.
SheriR: Cannon Beach Columbia Bank will be consolidated with the Seaside
branch, as of October 23rd. Tara, Sheri, and Chad will be moving to the
Seaside branch. Accounts will follow to the Seaside branch. Many people
are using online banking and CB is a smaller bank.
KathyK: So there is a Manzanita and Seaside branch, now?
GeorgeV: Approaching someone without a mask…if you are wearing a mask you
are setting a good example.
SheriR: MacGregor’s is having their grand opening this morning and will be
spreading out their opening throughout the morning
GeorgeV: Do you know of any retail space for lease in Cannon Beach?
HannahO: I have created a form for people to submit hours they are
volunteering to collect litter on the beach and the amount they have picked
up. If you would like to contribute, please join this group:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/294113982035531/
JeneePM: SOLVE has the Clean Swell app to collect information about trash
collection.
KathyK: Have the parents in Cannon Beach discussed what will be done if
kids are not going back to school?
JimP: That’s a huge topic statewide that is ongoing.
KathyK: The busses are running on regular schedule. Cannon Beach has not
taken action to start the weekday shuttle service. Street car running
through hasn’t been happening and there's no timeline to get it going. In
the fall, there will be a Get There Challenge to encourage people to take a
different means of travel to get to work. This year will include tracking
telecommuting hours.
GeorgeV: So the reason the shuttle hasn’t been running due to actions not
taken by the city?
KathyK: Yes, typically it starts around Sandcastle, but Sandcastle didn’t
happen this year so they haven’t selected a start date.
JeneePM: The Red Cross has added 2 more blood drives in Cannon Beach:
September 3 and December 8. The Red Cross is trying to figure out hotels,
restaurants, etc. to partner with them in case of disasters. If you would
like to partner, contact Jenee. Because of COVID, we cannot put up
shelters to house people due to potential spread. So we are looking for
places to assist with in case of fire, flood, etc.
KathyK: How is the parking in Cannon Beach?
HannahO: Not great, no changes. Super busy.
KathyK: We are looking for a paved park-in-ride location. Increase parking
outside the direct downtown area. If you notice any spots, please notify
Kathy.
JeanieM: Reimagine Portland Project about racial justice and policy
changes.

MaryBethC: Lots of people in town. People have been coming into and buying
at DragonFire Gallery - wearing masks.
KyleG: Lodging business has been good. Not filling up every day, like other
years but still good. Lots of last minute bookings.
JimP: Restaurant business is down due to lack of space to adhere to social
distancing. Restaurants have and are finding ways to seat people outside.
JimP: People are still reluctant to browse in shops. They are looking for
safety and will avoid places that do not appear so.
GeorgeV: Not all shops are down in sales. Some are up. Hopefully that will
continue after the government money stops coming.
KenP. Has sold 5000 of the 10,000 masks he was able to purchase. $18.50 per
box of 50 masks. Ken Potter 503-739-9540. chilkat.dist at hotmail.com
JimP: Chamber has given out 15,000 masks. Each week, businesses can make
their need request. Then pick masks up at the Chamber. Call 503-436-2623
GeorgeV: Brandon Ogilvie and Nancy McCarthy have announced plans to re-run
for their seats on the City Council. Has anyone else stepped up?
JimP: Not to my knowledge
KathyK; Sunset Empire Parks and Rec has a board opening. Contact Skylar
Archibald sarchibald at sunsetempire.com.
JimP: At yesterday's Chamber board meeting, officers were chosen - Pres
Greg Swedenborg, VP TJ Buehler, Secr Carly Dye, Treas Sheri Russell. Rest
of board are Lisa Spivey, Paul Tice, Michelle Duncan King, and Steve
Sinkler. One position is still open. Contact jim at cannonbeach.org
MaryBethC: Cannon Beach Chorus has been on hold during this pandemic. All
are looking forward to getting back together with director John Buehler
MaryBethC: As of today there have been 67 total cases of Covid-19 in
Clatsop County
JimP: Governor Brown has a press conference scheduled today at 11am
KathyK: Saw in Seaside Signal there have been car break-ins. Is that
something happening in Cannon Beach also?

MaryBethC, AnnC, MargoD, PaulD, KenH
JimP: Chamber breakfast meeting with Sam and Rick to discuss elementary
school and current COVID update. Next month will hopefully be health
department.
GeorgeV: Is there a COVID update?
JimP: Rick brought up that the majority of Clatsop County cases have
recovered with very little hospitalization. Cases nationwide are on the
rise, but Oregon has been pretty steady. There has been some stepping back
from opening procedures.
KathyK: Peter Roscoe wrote a good article about testing positive and then
going through quarantine.
https://www.dailyastorian.com/opinion/columns/guest-column-my-own-journey-through-quarantine/article_6d7b4ffc-c483-11ea-8eda-0f8a11b5e88f.html
GeorgeV: Interested in latest science as to how long the virus lives and
what it lives on, etc.
ErikO: Just got the word that I was negative for antibodies from the Red
Cross Blood Drive.
KathyK: I came back negative too, but there’s a lifespan for the
antibodies.
GeorgeV: Has anyone had one?
MaryBethC: Rick had to get one, he said it’s pretty invasive. The swab
goes down your nose to your throat.
JeneePM: Thank the chamber for having the blood drive. 37 people scheduled
and 35 came. 29 pints were collected.
GeorgeV: We were out to Cannon Beach and worked on getting the house ready
that will be listed next week. Hundreds of cars coming down.
MaryBethC: Coronavirus and new regulation, Ken does have the masks now and
if anyone needs disposable masks get in touch with him, they are $18.50/box
of 50 or $.37/each
JimP: The Chamber is giving out the allocation of masks today from the
State and County. It is a limited supply of masks and we will run out
soon, so please start looking for your own supply.
JimP: Chamber of office is open and safety procedures are in place.
Numbers are way down with highest total at 50 people in the chamber.
GeorgeV: But you are probably seeing a big increase in phone traffic and
web traffic.
JimP: Yes, we have. The hall rental has been difficult with lots of
cancellations. It’s very limited due to regulations.
GeorgeV: How many showed up to city council meeting?
ErikO: 4 in person, 20 on Zoom
GeorgeV: What is going on Kyle?
KyleG: I do social media for Escape Lodging and it was suggested I come to
the meeting. Mask conversations on social media have been rough. Ocean
Lodge and RV Park have been getting a lot of visitors that haven’t been
here before.
MargoD: Lots of people that should have been in Italy or Greece are now
coming here.
GeorgeV: Is there a rise in RV rentals?
KyleG: Bathrooms and pools are closed, so it has been busy with
self-contained renters.
GeorgeV: What about check-ins? Are they doing contactless?
KyleG: Yes and limiting check-in times
ERikO: Is the laundry facility at the RV Park open?
KyleG: Yes, it is for limited hours and locations.
JimP: Staffing is a major issue for everyone.
MargoD: I have employees that are afraid to come back.
HannahO: The City Council work session was interesting about fireworks and
discrimination.
JimP: Creating a whole new event around dogs to draw people into town. The
work going into spreading the message will take a lot of time and money to
do. The messaging was out for this year and sharing it amongst all the
pages.
KyleG: I hadn’t thought you could have fireworks in town anyways.
JimP: There was a big uptick in reports and cases of them contact people.
MaryBethC: During the SOLVE cleanup on Saturday, I cleaned the dunes from
Washington to Gower and picked up mostly bits of fireworks.
JeneePM: SOLVE event was great, 33 people showed up and collected 265 lbs
of garbage of cans, bottles, fireworks, and dog bags. 4 were Cannon Beach
residents and others were visitors to town.
GeorgeV: What percentage of trash collected from the beach is from visitors
compared to boats?
JeneePM: Not a large percent of microplastics. Mostly human debris from
visitors.
KenH: Lots of small bits of Styrofoam. Everything we picked up in dunes
was strictly from visitors on the beach.
MaryBethC: Was there fewer cigarette butts or more?
JeneePM: There were fewer. Another SOLVE event in 2 ½ weeks.
GeorgeV: How has been business in Cannon Beach? Josh still has Surfbird
Restaurant at Village Centre for sale.
JimP: Businesses are open. It’s different for each business. Some are
doing better, others are at 80% down. General consensus is that it is
down. Hotels are doing pretty well, lot less reservation and more last
minute stop in. Lot of people are around, but not a lot of business.
KyleG: About 10-12% down in rentals. The Driftwood is doing well, meeting
goals from last year.
MaryBethC: At Dragonfire, lot of people are really positive about Cannon
Beach safety messages with masks, hand sanitizer, and limiting numbers of
people.
JimP: Make your money in the summer so you can make it through the winter.
October will probably be the time in which we all take a hard look at how
the summer was.
KathyK: Going into the winter, we’ll all see that this isn’t going away.
GeorgeV: If schools aren’t going back, we may see some more people coming
later in the season.
MaryBethC: I don’t think the city has the resources to carry to small
businesses through. I think the federal government does have the resources
and should be helping.
HannahO: Has the city made any efforts to develop an emergency management
plan?
MaryBethC: Not sure, Bruce would be the person to ask.
KathyK: Determining the best ways for the federal government to directly
fund the small businesses, and the community needs to push the city to find
the best way for the funding to go through the CARES Act.
GeorgeV: Is there some type of collaboration between hotels and retailers,
since they are doing well? Cross promotion, selling items in hotels for
the businesses. Helps subsidize retail.
JimP: That is a great idea, not sure how to implement it.
KathyK: Delivery drivers will probably be open to collaborating with
hours. In my new role, we are working to make communities walkable and
rideable to increase equity. There are lots of options and information.
PaulD: Every other Thursday night we have a musical event at the park with
local/regional musicians. The Bistro will have pulled pork and chili slaw
sandwich with wine and beer for box dinners. It is not being advertised,
but by word of mouth. Performers booked out till September, musicians are
receiving tips and good vibes. It goes from 6-8pm. John, Jay, and Mike
Corey for this week.
