Brennan is leading the group restoring the Cannons found on Arch Cape beach in 2008. Brennan is a Texas A&M grad student and this is his thesis. This is his first trip to the Oregon Coast since he was 11 years old. He and his school shared the trip expenses. He says the first cannon is restored and is almost pristine. Both cannons are from the USS Shark as is the one at our History Center. While Brennan is here, Robert and he are shooting video. Today they visited the site at Arch Cape and picked up some metal pieces that could be associated with the USS Shark. Their store features sunken and buried treasures lost to the light of day for centuries - coins, jewelry, antiquities, and artifacts. Robert is originally from Crescent City and got started 20 years ago in Key Largo working with treasure hunters there. He has always been his own boss, most recently working in marketing. He and April married 4 years ago. April is originally from San Francisco and had been working in TV production. They honeymooned in Newport Oregon and began doing Art Festivals with their treasures. Both grew up in retail, April's parents had a flower shop and Robert's had a tackle and bait shop. Just before Christmas last year, they visited Cannon Beach and fell in love with the town. This is especially surprising considering the statement by Rick Little in September of 2009, , “there is no way” ODOT would embark on such a summer project over a roadway whose average daily traffic (ADT) of 6900 climbs to 10,000 during the peak summer months.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>Recently I had the misfortune of traveling on 26 eastbound on a Saturday at the end of April. At 10AM, I was delayed in traffic by construction on 26 at the Volmer Creek and Johnson Creek sites. Heading eastbound at that hour the delay was 20 minutes, I considered this misfortunate. What was more disturbing was the line of traffic which numbered more than 100 cars (I stopped counting at 100) heading westbound at 10AM on a Saturday in April. Their delay was certainly longer than mine and also more detrimental to the “public perception”. Those people are not likely to return to the coast during the summer months, when you are predicting a 10min delay from single lane flagging of traffic. Those people and their family and friends also are very likely to share their experience with others and opt to go elsewhere rather than be stuck on 26 with multiple potential delays. Especially with Gas prices around Four dollars per gallon that can make for a very costly journey to the coast.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>Gas prices and the economy are having effects on us all. Please consider the promises you and your office made to our communities on the coast as we all struggle to make the best of situation. Keep in mind we have a short “Summer Season”, and we were told that every effort would be made to not negatively impact our coastal economy. As we went around the table, everyone who attended spoke highly of these events and of the value of their content. Praise went out to Wendy for her leadership in bringing the Chick-fil-A Leadercast event to the coast and to Martin Hospitality for bringing the Zingerman’s Customer Service presentation to Cannon Beach and sharing it with the entire community. There was no doubt in the room that giving Great Customer Service throughout Cannon Beach would benefit all. Go the extra mile and give people something they’re not asking for and wouldn’t expect – exceed expectations. And do it all accurately, politely and enthusiastically. Teach great customer service by example – not just to customers and guests, but to staff, co-workers, suppliers, etc. Welcome and document complaints, requests and compliments. GeorgeV: Over Spring Unveiling Weekend, sales at El Mundo For Men were good, but sales at George Vetter FotoArt were not so good. The nice weather had people out and about, but very few people, when asked, said that they knew of the event before arriving to town. The exception was during the gallery’s scheduled 230pm Unveiling. Approx ¾ of the 30 people in attendance said they did know before arriving. Ann said traffic was good at Found. She credited the weather. Robert said CB Treasure company, having just moved to the front space for the weekend, saw good traffic. Sunday was a good sales day. Prudence said the Cannon Beach Gallery (CBAA) reception on Saturday was full. They had a book signing and the books sold out. Stephanie said Primary Elements had a stronger Friday and Sunday than expected, but that Saturday’s Unveiling was down. Erin, Cannon Beach Gazette, said she observed lots of lookers, but not a lot of buyers. Bob said EVOO had a good weekend both at their dinners and in the store. Only a couple people each night said they were in town for Spring Unveiling. Lindsey said The Wine Bar at Sweet Basils had good traffic. Tracy said Lush Wine Bar’s Friday was normal and they were closed Saturday for her Birthday Bash at the Legion. The Crab Festival in Astoria was something that people in town were mentioning. Seems people came down here after that. George said the Conference Center’s graduation of 150 students from the Bible School takes place annually during Spring Unveiling. Parents and relatives of those people were in town along with the Ferraris on Second Street next to Morris’s Fireside Restaurant. The number of Ferraris was down and some owners said that the number of people looking at them was down.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>3. KathyK: “On my way to Portland on Saturday at 10am there were 100 cars lined up at the bridge construction waiting to get to the beach”. Reception at 430pm and Concert at 7pm. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>15. GeorgeV: Last Wednesday evening at the Coaster Theater was the annual community Emergency Preparedness Forum. It was reiterated by Fire Chief Cleve Rooper that when the big one comes, police and fire personnel have been told their first priority is to get their families and themselves to safe, high ground before the tsunami comes – in about 15-20 minutes. They are to stay put until the all-clear has been sounded. Because a tsunami is not just one wave, but a series of waves over a period of time, the all-clear may not come for hours. People need to be prepared ahead of time by knowing where they will go, what they will take, and how they will reunite with their families afterward. People were encouraged to arrange with people who have homes and shelter on high ground to store medicines, special needs, food, water, blankets, etc with them. The last big-one was 311 years ago in 1700. Geologists have calculated that there has been a big-one on the average of every 250 years over the past 10,000 years. The big-one is likely to create sufficient damage to prevent people from escaping the tsunami in their cars. Maybe bikes will be usable, but most likely the escape will be on foot. Climb to the highest ground possible. Three shelter areas are currently stocked with some supplies and will be added to as time and money permit. Evacuation maps are available at City Hall. KathyK: We need to be sure the shelters are high enough to be safe and stocked with enough blankets and protection from the rain and cold to prevent hypothermia. The Oregon Department of Transportation is currently removing and replacing the Volmer Creek and Johnson Creek Bridges on U.S. 26 just east of U.S. 101. There is 24-hour flagging with single lane alternating traffic during the demolition of the existing bridges and construction of the new bridges between midnight on Sundays and 3 p.m. on Fridays at Milepost 2 and 3. Delays are not anticipated to be over 20 minutes. The majority of the work is anticipated to occur in the months of April through July with completion expected in October of this year. KathyK: With the shuttle gone and bus service cut to bare bones, many uninformed/mis-informed people are angered after waiting for a bus that doesn't arrive. Rich has a meeting with them this week. Be sure your staff is informed. Patrick Corcoran - OSU Extension Service: With all the attention on Earthquakes and Tsunamis after recent Pacific Ocean events, it is evitable that visitors to Cannon Beach are going to bring up the topic. As hosts to our guests we must be ready to "Own it, Frame it and Capitalize on it". We "Own it" by saying "Yes, we do have earthquakes followed by tsunamis". We "Frame it" by saying "The last big one was 311 years ago. Another could happen today or maybe not for another 100 years or more." We "Capitalize on it" by getting trained in knowing what to do in an emergency and letting our guests know that we know what to do and that we will lead then to safety. We need to know 1. What to be afraid of and what not to be afraid of. 2. Where is high/safe ground. 3. How to reconnect with family afterward. 4. To stay out of the Tsunami zone for 12 hours. Patrick is ready and willing to do 1 hour training sessions to groups. He stressed the importance of being trained and ready to answer questions of our guests and the media before June. One tip he had was that even if land and cell phone service is out, satellite service such as One Star would be available. He pointed out the importance of having walked the escape route from the various places that one might expect to find oneself in the event of a quake. George suggested that Patrick could/should work with the organizers of April 20th Community Preparedness Meeting at the Coaster Theatre. Jessica Raphael of Suzanne Elise, a former Jaycees member from Washington and her husband called Joanie's attention to the need for a Jaycees chapter in our area. There was a chapter that started back in the 40's, but disappeared in the 80's. Where a Chamber of Commerce is about the businesses, Jaycees is about the individuals. Jaycees are 18 to 40 years old. Jaycees identify community problems and solve them. There are 850 chapters across the USA with 24,000 members. There is an organization meeting today in Seaside at 6pm at the Pizza Harbor. Erin/Wendy: Due to the dire financial situation, SETD has announced that starting April 1, the Cannon Beach Shuttle is discontinued. The bus to and from Seaside will be cut from every hour to every two hours, besides starting later and stopping earlier. SETD has another board meeting scheduled for Thursday night. Kathy: This is a great loss to Cannon Beach. This undermines the PR that we spread about our free shuttle and put pressure on our already limited parking. Wendy: It appears that the Motel Tax bills are still in committee, but are still moving forward. George: According to a Feb 15th Daily Astorian article, two Senate bills being sponsored by Sen. Betsy Johnson, D-Scappoose, could change the uses for lodging tax dollars that fall under the current law’s strict definitions. The bills would allow cities and other collectors of lodging taxes to apply them to more general uses, if those uses can be tied to tourism. George and others expressed concern that if not for the current state requirement, none of the lodging tax dollars would be used for PR and that the proposed changes would result in no funds from any future increases being used for PR. BobNer suggested we invite Betsy to a WMM. George e-mailed her but did not hear back so re-sent his message.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>10. George: The Seaside Signal reports that "A Seattle-based consulting team is recommending the removal of the west bank berm between the Necanicum River and Highway 101 and constructing a 400-foot berm on the east side of the highway to ease the flooding along U.S. Highway 101. Consultants are also recommending crews construct berms at the RV Park and Beerman Creek or raise a portion of the highway, along with constructing a berm north of Beerman Creek and a berm/floodwall on Dooley Bridge. "Our overall goal is to provide uninterrupted function of Highway 101 during most years and to reduce the frequency and severity of flooding," said Vaughn Collins, senior engineer for Northwest Hydraulic Consultants of Seattle. "We are not trying to stop it." Kathy expressed concern that this was not enough and that more should be done. Yet she <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>received many calls from people asking about the 7pm concert. -- “There were a lot of people <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>interested in it.” -- They are now in the process of coordinating with the school to reschedule -- <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>now towards the end of May for the assembly for the schools. -- She indicated that there had been <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>no formal communication about the cancellation for those who might have tried to attend.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>Michael -- He has a mother and sister in Florence -- “My sister freaked out.” -- His opinion was <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>that if it wipes out Hawaii then he was going to worry. He went to the office and then decided to go <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>up to Neakahnie Mountain. He began taking pics of the coastline every 15 minutes, -- “Then it <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>became a normal day.”<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>Patti - Was contacted by her boss in Portland -- “Her husband was called in.” -- Patti “..spent the <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>time with Eric our emergency coordinator getting our best info from the TV.” -- She felt that the City <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>of Seaside had it more together -- Later they evacuated the lower floor of the hospital just to be safe. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>Lesle - Was aware of the crisis as soon as it came on the TV. Had already packed the car by the time <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>her son called at about 1:30am urging her to evacuate. She called her ex-husband Jack who then <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>indicated he had been called out as a CERT volunteer, so she went up Broadway where she knows <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>several friends. She stayed with one friend watching the news until about 9am then went home.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>Kathy -- “My first reaction was to watch the TV, then call my tenants in town: they were up. Then I <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>called my staff to make sure they were safe and prepared: I called in the order they live from the <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>beach. I woke up some of them and then got a call back with thank you for the warning. Then the fire <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>department went by announcing that we needed to go to higher ground. Okay. My worry is that there <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>was a lot of emphasis put on 7 when the news was saying that would be just the first of many waves. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>When 7:30 didn’t happen, people started to drive off right away. They seemed to be unaware that as <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>time goes on the waves could get bigger. After 7:30 the cars began moving again and yet there was <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>no all clear. It didn’t seem like people were expecting that type of thing either.”<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>Kari -- Her oldest son called 11:30 pm. “I stayed up all night to watch the tragedy. At 5:30 I went up <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>to the north entrance and sat in my car.”<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>Patrick -- “I was awakened by Wendy Higgins. First we made sure the gasoline at RV resort was <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>opened so we could take care of community members leaving town. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>-- Then we determined how to best deliver the message to our hotel guests.” Wendy had prepared <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>bagels and snacks for the guests at their hotel and ended up helping <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>those at the Stephanie Inn as well. After ensuring his staff and guests were taken care of, he and his <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>family “hung out” on high ground the majority of the day -- “We had about 10 people check out <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>because of the warning and perhaps another dozen cancel.” -- He then related a story about a flood <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>insurance policy which had expired March 9. He was told by his agent that they were covered, but a <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>question still remains about the gap between policy expiration and payment of the new invoice. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>Gary -- “I was preparing for our Savor Cannon Beach event on Thursday, driving through flooded <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>highway thinking, can this get any worse? We had a great event on Thursday, the wine throw down, <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>then I went home and watched the news. I thought, there may be something. Hearing that what <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>happens in Hawaii would be the first sign, I dozed off. At 3am there was a siren or Jackson pulling at <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>my arm because of the siren. I got up and just monitored things -- social media -- We would do <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>what we could do with social media -- At about 6 we went up to Haystack Heights. -- If you watched <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>the news -- I would have thought it was time to call FEMA -- They were on the extreme side -- What <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>they were doing on social media -- They were saying the tide has receded in Cannon Beach which <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>means a tsunami is building. I got on and sent a message -- “Hey KATU news: The tide has receded <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>and exposed a giant rock in the form of a haystack.” -- We came back down at 11:30 to set up for <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>our next event -- we missed only one event -- <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>Brian -- “We had 6-8 houses in. It is a bit more complicated to notify our guests because they are <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>not all one property.” -- He received a call at 1:30 from Linda who is on the fire board, then they <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>started calling guests and calling staff. “We all stayed home and watched the news. Then we went out <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>later and made physical contact with the guests we had not been able to reach earlier. All of our <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>guests stayed and we had 10 check ins that day and they all came. -- He continued to say they had <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>warned the pending arrivals of the situation and that they have had a plan in place for about 5 years. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>“We will review that this week and make changes.” - He reminded us that the reverse 911 calls are a <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>courtesy. It is an automated system that keeps going until it it answered. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>John B -- Stated that his comparison is from Kansas and tornado warnings. It is my <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>understanding that the program has recently been awarded additional funding for staffing and they <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoPlainText>are in the process of seeking a new executive director.
