that the people gathered, now they are lined up all along Spruce and
Hemlock from midtown to downtown. View photos of the parade and the

1. DebbieN: It was a great Sandcastle weekend. Friday's Parade was smaller
than last year, but fun just the same. Saturday's Contest started off a
little wet, but overall the weather cooperated nicely. GeorgeV: [Photos at
https://gvfa.smugmug.com/Events/Cannon-Beach-Sandcastle] The weekend
included the parade on Friday, the contest on Saturday, the bonfire on
Saturday and the fun run on Sunday. (photos are divided accordingly)
Saturday's weather was on again, off again. Three times I had to take off
my sweater and three times I had to put it back on. In spite of the Rose
Festival Parade, the Sandcastle crowd was great. At noon, 500 cars were
already parked on the beach while more were pouring in. Nearly 750 cars
entered the beach at Tolovana accounting for 3500 people. Add to that the
1000 rooms and cars parked throughout town, and my guess is that somewhere
around 10K people enjoyed the day and the 45 sand sculptures, including 7
masters plots.

Team True Grit took first place among the masters with "American Standard"
depicting an elephant and a donkey in a tractor pull, pulling a ballot
apart. Second among the masters was team Form Finders with their Alice in
Wonderland theme. Besides the Masters, there were winners in 5 other groups
including Large Group, Small Group, Sand Teens, Sand Juniors and Sand
Fleas. There is a photo of the board showing all the winners.

The Fire Department, Friends of Haystack Rock and the Chamber all benefited
from the sale of food from their booths.

By my guess, more than 200 people enjoyed the bonfire, the s'mores, the
music of our own Thistle & Rose and Saturday's sunset. Firemen Eric and
Arnie demonstrated their pyrotechnic skills.

Many volunteers worked to make this weekend possible. None more than Debbie
Nelson (of Basketcase - Your Cannon Beach Florist) who chaired the
Sandcastle Committee (again). Chamber Director Court Carrier and assistant
Jim Paino worked tirelessy along side Debbie. Special kudos to Court and
Paul (Tolovana Inn) for their execution of the Chamber's food booth. Many
businesses stepped up with financial support. None more than Coaster
Construction - not only with their money, but also with their crew. Special
thanks to owner Mike Clark and manager John Nelson.

Mark your calendar now for next year's event - June 17, 2017

1. KevinL: Affordable housing is being addressed throughout Clatsop County.
The problem exists in Astoria, Warrenton, Gearhart, Seaside and Cannon
Beach. There is a shortage of homes for young families looking to purchase
a starter home and for employees looking to rent. It is accepted in the
industry that a person/household can afford to spend 30% of their income on
housing. A person working full time at $12/hr could afford $624/mo. The
shortage of employees in the county is closely related to the lack of
affordable housing.

2. LauraK: Sandcastle 2016 is just a month away - June 11. If you can give
some time to volunteer to help, contact lkaim at cannonbeachgazette.com or
cbflorist at theoregonshore.com. Or for $25 you can be a "Plot Buddy" - an
opportunity to connect with a plot and have your name posted there. Some
plot buddies bring refreshments to the sculptors or provide them with
discounts, etc. Contact jim at cannonbeach.org. Six master plots are already
scheduled. Food booths at this year's event will include one by the Fire
Dept, one by Friends of Haystack Rock and one by the Chamber. Friday
night's parade, starting at 530pm next to the Chamber back Second Street,
does not require pre-registration. It will include the court of the Astoria
Regatta and much much more.

3. Pelican Pub & Brewery is now open. Come by for lunch starting at 11am
